CrossFit StumpTown

I own two CrossFit gyms in Seattle and I travel a fair bit so I am pretty critical when I drop into gyms. This place was awesome. Tony was great. The class was organized, the warmup was thorough, and the workout was tough and effective. I highly recommend this gym if you are visiting or looking for a place to call home.

Excellent well run gym with even better people. Dropped in while traveling, I would recommend highly.

Crossfit Stumptown is amazing. I have been going here for two years, and couldn’t be happier. The coaches are wonderful, and they really want you to become a true crossfitter. The gym runs like a friendly family, and is very encouraging. The gym has all levels of athletes, from newbies to competitors to everything in between. Tony and Joon are skilled at their craft, and truly exemplify great crossfit coaching.

I just got into doing Crossfit at a gym (Crossfit V16) in the bay area. Now that I am back in Portland for a while, I wanted to find a local CF gym to call home. Stumptown was the second place I tried. It has a website that is easy to navigate and it is less expensive that many of the other options.
First the good things about Stumptown:
They are awesome about letting people come try out the gym! They told me to come back a few more times to make sure I liked the gym before signing up. I thought that was really cool. They have a huge space with showers and can accommodate large classes. They have plenty of equipment too. The work-​outs kicked my butt in the best way. They try to keep things just slightly competitive which really made me push myself. They seem to have a solid community of members who love it there. They are less expensive than a lot of places too.
Now the down side:
The instructors, although both of them were very nice, didn’t spend much time orienting me to the gym. I spent most of the class trying to figure out what to do without much help. I never got any help with my form either. I got the feeling that they didn’t really care that much. I really like getting tips on my form, or an occasional cheer from the coaches and that did not happen. That was my main criticism, although I think that the gym could have been a little better organized and it definitely could have been cleaner.
Ultimately, I choose to join a different CF gym. I think if the coaches at Stumptown engaged more with their members in the ways I described, it would really add a lot to their business.

I work out here with my mom when I’m in Portland over college breaks. CFST has a great community that welcomes new and transient members with open arms. The coaches are all helpful and fun to be around and the WODs are challenging – every time I work out here, I feel like I just did the hardest WOD of my life.

A friend and I were passing through Portland and decided to work out and chose Stumptown for the box. We met June and he was awesome. He spent time to get to know us and coached us like we were regulars. If I’m ever in Portland again I’ll definitely stop in Stumptown.

I’m a 3 year in, intermediate Crossfitter traveling around Oregon via «got everything with me in my car. It’s hard to get a workout in when you’re doing that.
I hit up Crossfit Stumptown and it was perfect. Free drop in, paid $ 20 for my earned shirt, nice people. You could tell the Crossfit family was tight but still welcoming. The Saturday team WOD was really what I needed hard but doable. I was even able to shower afterwards! That was the icing on the cake.
I would definitely recommend and come back.

I have been attending CrossFit Stumptown for almost a year now. I had never done CrossFit before, and to be honest, I was very intimidated by what people around me were saying about the workouts. With that being said, from day one I have had a phenomenal experience.
First, the coaching. I am not a competition class CrossFit member but I appreciate them pushing me where I need it and letting me learn how to push through more difficult movements on my own. When I have questions Tony and Joon are receptive and helpful, but more importantly passionate about my well being as a member.
Second, the community. As crossfit became part of my daily life it was important for it to feel like something I wanted to go and do. I attend the 6 o clock class regularly and have grown to know almost everyone by name. New members are welcomed into the family with support and encouragement. We stay until everyone is finished, cheer when PRs are achieved and sweat our asses off together.
Third, the workouts. As I said I have been a member for almost a year, each day brings new movement combinations as well and the CrossFit classics. They are always keeping us on our toes. Being someone who has never regularly lifted weights it has been amazing to see the progress I have made from a strength standpoint. I look forward to each workout, even though they are hard as hell, the feeling of accomplishment afterwards is reason alone to keep coming back for more.
Overall, I would recommend this box to anyone who is new or seasoned in the CrossFit movement. You will find great coaching, members and a regiment that will kick your ass. Get to it.

I’m updating my review — I’ve been going to Crossfit Stumptown for around a year now; I finally settled on this gym because it was one of the cheaper gyms/​closest to my home.
And dude, I dunno. Am I satisfied? Not really. The coaching is so-​so. Joon and Tony are really great about showing people how to do the Olympic lifts, but not so much anything else. After nearly a year at the gym, I still don’t know how to do a kipping pull-​up — we’ve rarely had any instruction on it. Same with double-​unders; that I had to figure out on my own by watching YouTube videos with better instruction.
Regarding the weightlifts too, before I moved to Crossfit Stumptown, I’d been doing Crossfit for 6 months at another gym (out of state) and am glad that I mastered the Olympic weightlifts there — I’m not sure how I would fare if I’d learned them at Crossfit Stumptown. After Joon and Tony do the demo, they’re not very good about checking people’s form during the WOD OR during the Big Lifts/​Strength portion — if you don’t know how to do the lifts, you’re basically on your own unless you make a special effort to seek them out and *make* them pay attention to you. I’m actually scared to try heaver weight during that portion for fear of injuring myself because nobody is monitoring me.
Other issues with the gym? The classes are starting to get bigger and bigger. Think 15+ per class. Often times there aren’t enough weights, bars, jump ropes (which are shitty enough to begin with), etc for everybody. People end up stealing each other’s spots/​equipment OR have to break away from the Big Lifts/​Strength portion early to make sure they can claim the equipment they want. Sometimes, people will end up stealing your bar/​box in the middle of the WOD!!! Ugh. Not to mention that crowded classes mean even less attention from the coaches, which is already a problem to begin with.
I want to give this place 2 stars, but quite frankly, I think this gym might still be one of the better ones in PDX, which doesn’t speak highly about Crossfit gym quality in Portland in general. And I won’t deny that both Joon and Tony are nice people who know their lifts. I just wish they would be a little bit more attentive/​do something about crowd-​controlling their classes.

I spent my birthday in Portland and of course had to drop in and keep up with my Crossfitting while on the road. I researched all the boxes in the area. This box seemed to have the most qualified coaches and it seemed to embody the true spirit of Crossfit. I emailed Tony and set up my drop-​in days. The box is no-frills…the WOD and everyone’s performance is recorded on the dry erase board, and the space looks to be in transition (not sure what their plans are). The groups does a standard dynamic warmup that is very comprehensive… dig that. Most WODs have a strength component followed by a Metcon. Tony made me feel welcome by introducing me to the group. We ended up talking for a few minutes after the WOD. He is extremely knowledgeable and this makes him a great coach. Plus, he’s motivating. Good stuff.

I’ve been to several crossfit gyms in PDX as well as 2 other states. This is my favorite. 5 stars easy. Coaches Tony and Joon are tremendous trainers. Yep, it’s expensive for a gym; but not for crossfit.

I have been a member here for 2 yrs and will not go to ANY other gym! I am challenged every work out-​even if Joon says that it is an «easy one». No work out is ever the same so your body never knows what it is going to be put through-​thus getting the best results ever!!! Tony-​the owner-​is a fabulous trainer. Joon has coached me in the majority of my classes and I have to say that he is GREAT! He is patient, pushes you, makes sure your form is correct and makes sure you are not slacking off (which is something I need!) I am really happy that I found Crossfit Stumptown and very much enjoy my workouts. Joon you are FABULOUS!!!

My boyfriend and I visited here to do an open workout while visiting Portland for a weekend, and it was awesome! Tony and Carly were very helpful in getting us set-​up and taking the time to judge our reps. We greatly appreciated their time, encouragement, and advice and will definitely have to visit again! Great gym.

The highlight of my day is my workout at this gym. The whole crew (Tony, Joon, Emily) are fun and helpful and challenge me without making me feel like a total wuss (which I am). Tony treats everyone like he’s known them for years and he watched you like a hawk. If your form is off, he comes right over. If you’re not pushing yourself, he’s giving you a hard time.
Joon gets better with every class and Emily Celiwhatsherface is one of my favorite humans on the planet.

Stumptown is awesome! Tony is a great coach! I’ve also had the privilege to work with him one-​on-​one for personal training.
As the head coach, he really takes the time to get to know his clients and their goals. He has years of experience in the fitness industry so he definitely knows his stuff. He’s always looking at furthering his knowledge of fitness by looking outside the CF community to make him an overall, well rounded coach. This is why his programming makes sense!
He and the other coaches on staff make sure you’re movements are done correct and safe. **All movements can, and are modified for those that are new, injured, or unable to do the movement in a safe, efficient, and correct fashion.** They’re all motivating and extremely friendly.
The other members are really friendly! Everyone always comes in with a smile, and believe it or not, they all leave with a smile! I will NEVER go back to a globo gym again!

I’ve been working out at Crossfit Stumptown since September 2011. I’ve lost 60 pounds since I started and i don’t think my strength or conditioning have ever been better. Tony and Joon are great coaches. They’re motivating and knowledgeable and they can tailor every workout to a person’s ability. The other members are really nice and there’s a great sense of community at the gym. I always look forward to working out and afterwords I always feel like I’ve accomplished something I can be proud of.

After reading all the reviews, I’m totally bummed that I didn’t meet Tony. When I dropped in, I used a Groupon and they welcomed me into the class.
I got paired up with this super fit girl who had an injury in the same foot as me, we were meant to be.
The coach (not Tony from all the reviews) was the reason I never went back. She acted aloof and never really pushed us to take it up a notch.
And maybe this is rude, but the coach just didn’t inspire me with her own level of fitness. When a coach or trainer is way buffer than me and their demonstrations of the movements makes me drool a little with ‘muscle envy’ I feel instant motivated to kick ass. This just didn’t happen for me here.
Wish I had met Tony.
The workout itself was great. I felt wonderful afterwards and my abs were pleasantly sore the next day.
Now I’m a member at Crossfit HEL… and I effing love it. It has everything I love about getting strong and more.

CrossFit! Its amazing. You hear so much about it. And yes its everything and more. Tony is one of the best trainers around. The fact he has education outside of crossfit is the key factor to why i enjoy this club so much. The workouts test me mentally everyday. The partner classes on sat’s are fun and very unique. I wont ever stop going.

Finding a good Crossfit gym is like finding a good Mexican restaurant. I can walk down the street or look in a phone book and find plenty of Mexican Restaurants. I can find one that’s close to my house, or close to my job, or… well you get the picture. There are a lot of Mexican Restaurants, but there are not too many GOOD Mexican restaurants. Same goes with Crossfit gyms (gyms in general really) there are a lot of places you can stop in and attempt the Workout of the Day, but you will find that many of those places are average, or even sub par.
CrossFit Stumptown is the Crossfit gym you hope to find while sorting through all the average gyms around the area. There are a long list of things that make this a great place to work out; large workspace, good schedule with lots of classes, reasonable membership prices and they even got there own parking lot! However the most positive things about this Gym is the Head Instructor\Coach Tony. He is always friendly and truly talented with helping others meet there physical fitness goals.
I would recommend this gym to anyone regardless of your fitness level. A real great place to work out!

I tried out a lot of CrossFits around Portland before picking one to call home.
As soon as I walked in the door and met Tony, I knew i had found the place that I wanted to train at. Tony knows what’s up. He’s been in the Crossfit scene for awhile now. You can tell. The man has skills. You can tell that he genuinely loves coaching, he’s down to earth, and actually wants to create a Crossfit community. He doesn’t rush instructions and makes sure that you have proper technique (so crucial to building your crossfit base). Plus, he’ll tell you when you are not hitting the mark on your wall balls or cheating on your weights. He’ll push you and you’ll smile. The new gym us just getting set up and I am excited to watch it grow.
I am more sore then I have ever been, and damn does it feel good.
5 stars for the new StumpTown.
