Chipman Relocations

We just moved a 30-​person office in Portland and worked with Ryan Smith at Chipman — he and his crew leaders Joel and Fredy were fantastic. They were very thorough in supporting us with the tools to pack and label our equipment and belongings so the move was quite painless. We were only down for one day and the crews took less time than anticipated to get us moved and set up. They were efficient, friendly and pricing was very competitive. I would not hesitate to call them again for our future needs.

Chipman Movers are simply the best! I retired from the Coast Guard and had 13 cross country moves, so I was experienced with different moving companies and a variety of customer service encounters. Our latest move was from Astoria Oregon to South Carolina. This move went off without a hitch, they arrived on time, were very professional in packing and neatness, picked up on schedule and left our house clean. They were in contact with me the whole move and the driver even stayed in contact with me as he drove our belongings across country. He even asked if we could receive our stuff early, which we were excited to do as not having to place our goods in storage. Driver and crew worked on a Sunday and everything, and I mean everything arrived, without any loss or damage. THIS WAS SIMPLY THE BEST MOVE OUT OF 14 MOVES, THEY ARE SIMPLY THE BEST!!! I would use them again, or recommend them to anyone looking for a quality moving company. Their estimator, Paul was very flexible and worked with us when our house sale fell apart three times, and our moving coordinator Janella stayed in contact as we made our way cross country, these two are second to none in the moving industry. Keep up the fantastic work.

If you have to move, go anywhere else but these Mayflower/​United Van Lines agents. These people are TERRIBLE! I wish it were possible to post NO stars. They seemed cordial enough on the phone and a folksy estimator came out to asses our items and take an inventory. We found out later he was required by law to give us consumer brochures detailing our rights and responsibilities of the move. We never got them. His inventory fell quite a a bit short of the things we were moving, which was concerning, because anything NOT on that inventory would either be left behind, or be subject to extra charges. These were mostly large, difficult-​to-​miss items that were quite heavy. My husband made his own list and that became our inventory, at a higher cost, of course. The estimator did not bother to inform us of the movers’ liability for replacement or damage, only offering us $ 0.60 per pound, rather than full replacement value. If I had not very carefully read through our agreement, only available online… NO PHYSICAL COPIES were given to us… we would have had to accept something we didn’t want. Full replacement insurance does cost quite a bit more, but we thought it was worth it. At that point, I complained about all this to our moving coordinator. Subsequently, we received a call from the estimator, wanting to talk things through. We didn’t want to do that. The next day he called again. This time wanted to come to our house to talk things over. It was quite early in the day so I said we’d get back to him. He replied, «If you don’t contact me by noon, I will cancel the move.» There was less than a week to go at that point. Also, somehow our data with Mayflower got online and we got more than 15 early-​morning calls from movers wanting to give us a quote. The information they had was unique to Chipman Moving & Storage as to contact name, so I knew it did not come from the public record. Moving coordinator admitted no responsibility but the problem did stop after I told her about it. The coordinator also said she’d get our estimator to back off, and that the move would not be cancelled. We went to their office to get some free used boxes from them, as well as to actually meet the moving coordinator. Far from being businesslike, she attempted to hug me! Didn’t happen. I reminded her that we still didn’t have the consumer brochures. She did not give them to us, and I had to find them on line. Our move will happen in 5 days, and we’re still apprehensive as to what may yet happen. I do know that the moving estimator who threatened us with cancellation is still employed there. If he/​d gotten us to agree to the original invoice and agreement, and most people will just do that without reading them, they would have had very low liability and we would have been faced with a lot of surprise extra charges. Perhaps that’s why he has job security. I don’t hold Mayflower Transit responsible for this. Chipman is just the agency that arrange peoples’ moves. But take my advice: there are LOTS of Mayflower representatives out there. DO NOT USE CHIPMAN MOVING AND STORAGE! We regret having had anything to do with them, and I don’t want to think of anyone else having these problems, too. As an update: this is our moving day. The movers are efficient. Unfortunately, they’ve given us a SHARED van, despite the agents telling us not to worry, we’d get our own van. They won’t return our calls, and the movers won’t stop loading. So they lied right to our faces. AGAIN I urge you DON’T USE CHIPMAN!

My move was scheduled for this morning at 8:00. A representative from this company had visited my home a week earlier and estimated that it would cost 1,800.00 to move my homes furnishings. To defray this cost I agreed to box my library of books and to move all of my artwork myself. 20 minutes early two men showed up and refused to box the rest of my items, and then they left. I then enlisted the moving services of Thunder Movers who, at the last minute, showed up and boxed and moved EVERYTHING for 386.00. Not only is this abysmal company charging unheard of rates, they left me in a lurch on the day of my move. The absolute worst moving experience I have ever had.

Wow! Service is not dead and it’s alive and well at Chipman Relocations. Our furniture had been warehoused in Alameda, CA for nine months prior to our move into our new housein Portland. Travis, Michelle, Kyle and Mike were just great. They were friendly, industrious and knowledgable. Our goods arrived in near perfect condition because of the care they took in its handling. I would use them again in a heartbeat! Also to Mike and Alex who then moved us from Vancouver to Portland — well done guys! You made it up and down those three stories with no problems and you made a very stressful day much less so. Thanks to you all. Gail and Jim Carberry
