I was a big fan of the Burrito Bandito but sadly it is no more. Maybe it lives elsewhere in town but it is no longer in the Texaco parking lot across from Warner Pacific college. What a shame, they made the best torta I’d ever had…

There’s a new hazard on the corner of 67th and Division. A nefarious danger that lurks in a Texaco parking lot across from Warner Pacific College, waiting to ambush unsuspecting travelers on their way out Division. Yes, it’s the Burrito Bandito taco truck, in all its bright airbrushed Mexican street scene glory. I had seen this truck for a while but never had occasion to stop. Just 15 blocks closer in is Los Gorditos, the infuriatingly inconvenient truck that serves vegan food. I always end up there, waiting 20+ minutes for a burrito, because my wife is a veggie. So alas, it took me quite some time to make it over to the Bandito to check him out. Finally I made it in yesterday, and after months of pent up anticipation, it was, well, anti-climactic. I ordered a $ 5 asada burrito, and really the best part about it was the lack of wait time. There was nobody in line, and that’s not surprising. The burrito was big but not huge(for $ 5 from a truck, I expect ginormous). The meat is ok, gristly as would be expected, and the rest of the ingredients(lots of cheese, rice, crema) were of ok quality. There was no cilantro, salsa fresca, or onions in the burrito. It was very plain. I guess it normally comes with lettuce, but I asked for none. All in all, I was underwhelmed. And to top it off, he didn’t grill the tortilla. :( So really what it comes down to is that it was a mix of a standard tortilla, with meat, cheese, rice, and crema, and no special flavorings at all. I could easily make this much better at home. Also, the salsa was not much to speak of. So while I’ll still give this truck 3-stars for being, well, cheap and decent, in the land of plenty decent taco carts, this one is not king, or even close to royalty. One extra star for the airbrushed donkey and mean-looking pit bull on the side of the truck. Airbrushed donkeys rule.
