This place is delicious. I’ve been here multiple times & they haven’t let me down once. Its always packed here & the line gets pretty long but it moves at a pretty fast rate. I love their tomato soup with the grilled cheese sandwich on the side & their breken bowl is delish. It’s just a cute little local spot in Portland. & everyone that works their is nice & helpful. Definitely a must try!

Definitely a fan of all dishes and beverages at Breken. However, my all-time favorite is the Breken Chicken Bowl. The chicken is cooked to perfection every time. It’s consistently fresh, juicy, amazingly tender and flavorful. And their chimichurri can’t be beat. Absolutely AMAZING chim! I’ve tried making my own at home but it’s not even close to what Breken does. Fingers crossed for the recipe one day! The carrots are good, but I really hope they bring back the sweet corn in the chicken bowl!

Quaint, simple and inviting neighborhood café. Coffee is great, green egg sandwich was lovely. Wish they were open on the weekends!

Great atmosphere and a good place to stop in on weekdays. You can’t go wrong with the tuna melt or grilled cheese & tomato soup combo. The baked goods are also amazing, I recommend the frenemy cookie.

I think I just ordered the wrong thing! Line out the door, but my food was really mediocre and my coffee, which was special for the season, was one of the worst I’ve ever had. Very popular obviously, so must be a fluke.

Beverages: 5 stars. Food and ambiance for a childless woman: 2 stars. Staff: 4 stars. Things I like about Breken: it is close to my apartment. It’s a neat space. The soy decaf pumpkin spice latte I had there yesterday was kick ass. Most of the staff are super friendly and pleasant. Things I could do without: tons of screaming children(it’s practically on top of a school) and/or a room full of freelance workers using the space as their cheap office. The menu is definitely geared towards children and people who love sandwiches. I tried the gf breakfast bar thing once and it was terrible. My boyfriend brought me home their nachos one day and I was disappointed he spent money on… basically cheese and chips. Works for kids, I guess. Good place to meet up with a friend with kids. NOT the place to grab a quick coffee any time when there might possibly be children and their caregivers to explode the register.

The fact that Breken Kitchen is closed on weekends is one of the biggest mysteries I’ve pondered today.(Hey, it’s my day off. Don’t judge.) But seriously, I just don’t get it. They would make a killing. It’s the perfect breakfast café. Except for the fact that this place isn’t open every morning that I wake up craving a delicious breakfast sandwich, this is The Spot. The not-being-open 2/7ths of the week dampens my enthusiasm but slightly. Crispy, piping hot egg sandwiches on fresh bread with impeccably cooked eggs, oozy yolks, gooey sharp cheddar cheese. Hearty soups. Perfectly steamed lattes. Nachos with a certain window of availability that I haven’t managed to actually meet makes them all the more alluring. Get breakfast here, but please don’t bring your yappy girlfriends and your hordes of toddlers for, like, 3 hours of gossip. Spare us.

Went there many time. I love their paleo bowl. They were very accommodating with my request so I can enjoy my meal more. Tomato soup had a little kick of heat and came with Grand Central Bakery como bread is also my another favorite.

I had their tomato soup and toasted cheese sandwich. It was great and I’ll definitely be back. A wonderful setting by the Fremont bridge. There is room for folks working out, business meetings, and people with laptops. A great place to study!

–Eclectic design with community & private tables along with outdoor seating. –Loved my goat cheese bacon sandwich and sparkling lavender lemonade –nothing fancy in terms of customer service but who cares when you’ve got a place that works for families, individuals, business meet ups or a friends day out?!

This place has great soups, ok sandwiches & the coffee is DREADFUL. They used to have such friendly women but now it’s this tallish server with the tall attitude & sour soul. Her thinly disguised contempt for everyone is freaky! The Latino dudes who make the food are super cool –bring them out front! (((Bring back the fun & friendly girls!)))

This is a great spot w/good coffee and food. BUT! I wish it was open on the weekends! Now that there are hundreds of people living in this area, there’s no reason to not be open on Saturday and Sunday. Hopefully that changes soon.

Cute café amidst warehouses and the train tracks! The service is friendly and efficient. I ordered the paleo bowl and thought the vegetables to be a little too soft, but the chicken was perfect. It was also lacking seasoning, but a little salt and pepper spiffed it up. The chimichurri sauce on top is delicious! I will definitely come back to try the soup for sure.

I went here to do some work. There were lots of plugs and it was relatively quiet(although lots of road noise, since it’s so close to the freeway.) I imagine if the big roll-up windows were open it would have been very loud. There were basically no caffeine free options for morning(although they did have beer available) and I ended up with peppermint tea, which was… fine. Tomato soup was very tasty. Breakfast and lunch items seemed a little expensive for what they were. Nice, attractive décor and plenty of tables. There was free parking for customers, which was nice.

What if I told you that somewhere, under the Fremont Bridge, just beyond the tent cities, the abandoned warehouses, and the endless freight trains that tie up traffic at the most inopportune times, there is a little food haven called Brekken? And if you manage to locate said Brekken, and park in one of the few approved parking spots(lest you be towed or ticketed mercilessly), you would find a breakfast and lunch nirvana so complete you may actually consider moving to this industrial part of town, the constant freight train schedule be damned. The Brekken kitchen inspires such loyalty among its regular clientele. Their daily specials are never to be missed, and they run the gamut of Mexican, Thai, good olé American comfort, soups, stews, sandwiches. Perfection, really. Ingredients are top notch, execution is spot on. Brekken takes care of those working in the converted warehouses of the area. It’s practically a secret that you have to be let in on in order to find it. It’s a great place to get caffeinated with the Water Avenue coffee, plug in your laptop, and ease into your day.

Checked out Breken with my wife. I recommend – give it a try for Water Avenue coffee, breakfast and drop-in for some smart phone/PC/Mac work/web browse/play-time. It is an open, airy space. Brick building with reclaimed hard wood floors. Good natural lighting due to large windows and roll up doors. Good views of Freemont bridge. Breken is located in an area is primed to THRIVE with more growth, more people! Why? The Willamette River condo’s across the tracks, that parallel NW Front/Naito Ave. are building up & out. And it is on the out skirts of the Pearl District bursting at its seams. While you hang out, try the«Elvis» grilled crispy peanut butter and banana sandwich($ 3.95) and the goat cheese, bacon, avocado and fried egg sandwich($ 6.95). Both delicious! Good value! It’s ORGANIC so don’t PANIC!

The food is so flavorful, delicious and healthy! Their vegan mulligatawny soup was one of the best soups I’ve had, so good! I also got their chicken salad bowl and it was exactly what you want a salad to be: bursting with flavors and textures! You will leave full, satisfied and feeling good! :)

Breken is the perfect blend of quiet, homey, friendly, and quaint. The atmosphere lends itself to provide a comfortable area to all the typical coffee shop café patrons… folks who work mobile, families with children, and the person simply looking for an out of the way location to have a break from life and sink into a tasty meal with a cup of coffee or tea. Today I had the house made tomato soup with the Tillamook grilled cheese sandwich. I love tomato soup… and this ranks among the top I have ever had. It was perfectly seasoned and clung to the bread when I dipped it, creating the perfect upgrade of flavor to the grilled cheese. I also got a Steven Smith Jasmine Green iced tea… and while I am a loyal patron of The Jasmine Pearl and their fine loose leaf teas, this was prepared very well and was not over or under steeped. I did not sample any of the pastries today, but there was quite a variety available. I was also on my way to work, so I did not get to take advantage of the comfortable looking patio seating. Well done Breken! This is a fantastic escape tucked away in NW Portland. My only complaint was that parking was a little bit difficult to find, but then… we do live in Portland.
