Bicycle Repair Collective

I truly love this place. They always are happy to help when you stop by, and more than once, I’ve dropped in with a flat tire, and they’ve thrown it up on the rack, swapped it out, and sent me back on my way, just charging for a new tube. They’ve handled fixing/​tuning up all four bikes in our house, and even fixing foul-​ups other bike shops have made (ahem. Bike ‘n Hike…).

Wanted to echo what everyone else here seems to be saying: these guys are great.
I have an old road bike that I bought this past summer, and I needed to get it ready for the winter. I started off at REI, where they sold me a few things (fenders, etc.), and quoted me over $ 100 to make the needed installations and repairs to the bike. After I hesitated, the sales rep at REI walked me through the needed repairs and installations and convinced me that I could do them myself. Upon returning home, I realized my confidence was unwarranted. I needed help.
Enter the Bicycle Repair Collective. I brought in my new equipment for the bike from REI and described some of the repairs I thought the bike needed. They took a look at the bike, quoted me $ 80 – 90, and told me they’d have it for me in a few days. Two days later, they called me to pick it up. I came to get it and they charged me $ 64.
The bike looks great, rides better than it ever has before, and I credit that entirely to these guys at the Bicycle Repair Collective. Not only did they do great work, they charged me a very fair and reasonable price.

These guys are great. Today my wife and I are riding to the food carts on Belmont and 43^rd ish and she lost the screws that attach her basket and it fell into the rear cassette leaving us walking. After filling our bellies we headed over to Bike stuff. The two gentlemen there where very nice and willing to help. The tools where lent to me and the right bolts and nuts were found and given to me. There was an open space to repair my wife’s bike myself, which I loved. I’m sure these men do quality work too if you’re not handy enough to do it yourself. For a repair to be payed for, or to stop in to do the work your self, this place is awesome. Thank you Bike Stuff!!! :)

I want to give these guys a good review, even though they weren’t able to fix my bike. It wasn’t their fault; my bike is old and has an obsolete part. You see, I bought it at a yard sale a couple years ago and it’s been sitting in my parents’ garage in southern OR ever since. It was rusted when I got it. I’d been looking at bikes recently, and thought, «why not fix up that old thing?» My parents were kind enough to bring it up to me on a recent trip, so I was eager to get the bike into a repair shop and get the ball rolling.
I took it to Bicycle Repair Collective based on the good reviews. Though I’ve been riding bikes since childhood like most people, I am no gearhead and I know more about cars than I do bikes!
I managed to fit the beast into my Hyundai Elantra (with the seats folded down) and drove it over there. After lugging the thing, flat tires and all, into BRC, I was greeted and they immediately looked the bike over. Luckily, the tires that I thought were bad were able to be inflated again. They also greased some rusty places on the bike. They took the time to explain the part that I needed (part of the brake mechanism, as the bike does not have hand brakes). Unfortunately, after a quick search, they didn’t have it, but then called over to Citybike without hesitation. Citybike had the part, so I was on my way.
I’m always impressed with people who take the time to help you, even if they can’t solve all your problems, and aren’t afraid to send you somewhere else, even if they lose your business. Since they didn’t get my monetary business, the least I can do is give them this review!

So I just bought a bike (literally, yesterday) and needed some new grip tape. I’ve eyed this bike shop before since it is literally across the street from where I work. It’s true– these guys (one fellow in particular) are really nice. I went in with a couple co-​workers and we were yucking it up with the guy and made the simple act of buying tape into a nice experience. I say this after dealing with some complete a-​holes via Craigslist trying to buy a bike. Seriously, people selling bikes on Craigslist are RUDE, thus the experience of going in and buying tape was a far cry from the complete lack of decency I experienced from the inconsiderate CL sellers. This will definitely be my go-​to shop not only for its convenience but also for its friendliness. I don’t have much experience with bikes nor with bike shops in Portland and have read some horror stories of pretentiousness so I’m really excited to become a regular here. Good service and good people!

I went to the shop looking for advice on overhauling a Shimano 333 hub. It’s a hub not held in high esteem, and parts are hard to find. Because of those issues, the several other bike shops I visited were of no help whatsoever. At the Bicycle Repair Collective I was pleasantly surprised at being treated so well and being offered the help of letting me photocopy the appropriate repair information from their shop manual. They had nothing to gain from my visit, but my future business and a good word for them. Thank You Bicycle Repair Collective.

It has been said before, but these guys rock! They know their stuff, listen carefully to the customer, fix what needs to be fixed and charge what seems like an unreasonably low amount. They have done excellent work on my fixed gear bike including having a seatpost that I could not find at any other shop. They also trued up a wheel from my road bike that was pretty bent up from a crash, I took it there first because I knew a regular bike shop would just have said to buy a new one. The wheel is as good as new. This may not be the best place for a newer high-​end road or mountain bike, but in my opinion it is unbeatable for any «practical» bicycle repairs.

This place is amazing. I have gone a few times over the years for various repairs (wheel truing, tune ups, etc.) and have always walked away feeling well taken care of– never ripped off or treated with the pretension/​condescension common to lots of other bike shops in Portland. Even if these guys over-​charged, which they don’t, I would still go here over other places for the kindness and patience and all around excellent service. I recommend them to friends all the time. If only I could find a car mechanic that made me feel this way, I’d be set for life.

This place, and these guys, are amazing.
I bought a gently used Bianchi road bike and decided to walk it up the street to have them give it a look over — just to see if it needed to be cleaned, or tuned, or whatever. I wish to death I could remember the gentleman’s name who looked over my bike, but he went over that bad boy with a fine tooth comb. He showed me things about bikes I’d never even heard of and gave me a good amount of advice. He tightened two a few parts, adjusted my saddle height perfectly, wiped my bike down and announced I was good to go — free of charge. WHAT?! Incredible. He then helped fit me with a good helmet and a lock.
I will never, ever take my bike anywhere else than this awesome shop with the marvelous customer service.

Honest and friendly service, and very reasonably priced.
I bought a 7-​year old Specialized Crossroads, and took it in to have a variety of things done to it to get it to be what I like. I asked them to give it a tune up as well, figuring after 7 years it might need it.
I was told it would be ready either the next day or the day after that. Now that’s fast! They called me 2 days later to tell me it did not need a tune up after all, and all the other work was complete.
When I picked it up, they made sure the seat was adjusted properly for my height, and showed me how to adjust the fenders before I took it out the door.
Very nice and helpful. I’ll consider this my shop from now on, if I need service for my bike.

This shop is one of a kind! Bicycle Repair Collective is a no nonsense, completely unpretentious alternative to the traditional full service bike store. This shop is all about repairs and maintenance. Sure they may carry a decent amount of products on their shelves, but this is no showroom floor. And that places BRC in an appropriate niche for its SE neighborhood location.
I brought my single speed Cannondale into the shop and explained what I needed: drivetrain cleaned, brake pads replaced, and rim sanded. I really had no idea how much all the work would cost, or how difficult it would be. To my surprise, they informed me that the tasks were actually very quick and easy, and that I could do them myself with the use of their shop. That’s right, they offer their shop to customers on a rate of $ 10/​hr! I have never heard of this service anywhere else before.
Turns out it was just what I needed. In fact, one of the mechanics dispelled one of my worries, while also alerting me of a repair that I’ll need in the near future. With a small amount of input from the mechanics, I put my new brakes on, sanded down a rough spot on my rim, and cleaned my drivetrain, all in about 45 minutes. They charged me $ 6. It was so cheap, I decided to tip them, which I’ve never done at a bike shop before.
I plan on making this my go-​to repair shop in the future. They make repairs simple, accessible, and very cheap. If you ever have a need for basic maintenance, and aren’t afraid to get a little dirty, this should be your place too.
Future purchases: Chain, and tires. I look forward to bringing my business here soon.

These guys are down to earth, unpretentious, and happy to help with whatever you need. I took my bike in to have the brakes fixed, and they not only fixed them – they spiffed up a few other things as well. They had it done in less than 2 hours, and it all cost less than $ 20. Awesome! I’ll definitely be back.

I needed to take my bike into a shop to have the brakes looked at. I was hesitant at first because I don’t know much at all about bikes, which can be intimidating. It also leaves open the possibility of getting ripped off.
Luckily for me, I took my bike here. The man who was in the shop, Mark took a quick look at the bike and showed me that all I needed was a quick fix, and one that I was able to do myself. He said if I couldn’t get it done, I could leave it with him and he would fix it for 5 – 10 bucks.
I came out with my bike once again ready to ride and didn’t have to spend a dime. Mark was busy working on another bike (for a paying customer) but still took the time to come over and check on my situation and answer some questions.
Overall it was a great experience and I will definitely come back for future repairs/​tune ups.

If you don’t own a fixed gear you may share my sentiment that other bike repair shops in southeast reek of pretentiousness. I usually go to said shops but came to the Bike Repair Collective after just noticing it the other day. It’s closer than these other places so I’m glad to report that it was an awesome experience.
I just needed a flat fixed, which already makes me feel inferior for not being bike-​savvy enough to do it myself. But the guy working was super friendly and more than happy to help. I had a couple other questions about the wear and tear of my tires and he was more than happy to answer my questions and interact with me. (I do NOT feel welcome to do this in other shops.) I ended up needing a new tire. Got a reasonably priced replacement and the flat was fixed in about ten minutes (maybe less). I will be going to this place for any future repair need. Yay!

I have lived in Portland for eons… epochs, and through it all I have tried many of the shops that work on bicycles in our fair city. And while none have left me cold, and many have been good, the Bicycle Repair Collective has always done the best work at the best price. They have never charged me more than they said they would, and my bike always comes back working like a swiss watch.
I would tell my mother to get her bike fixed by these guys, that is how much I trust them.

Totally smart bike fixers. Have what you need, can help you fix things yourself. Good prices too! Recently bought a seatpost from them — called up, they knew what I needed and had one, and it was cheaper than I thought it would be.

I recently purchased an older Schwinn ten speed to get around town as my second bike. I have not been able to ride it because the second I got it home, inflated the tires, I had a blowout. Plus, I’m kind of a nelly when it comes to riding in the rain.
Anyhow, this shop is nearby, and I pulled off the back wheel to bring it in to get a new tube. The guy helping me was super quick, and even noticed that the inside of the wheel was a little jagged, so he filed it down for me to save the new tube. You can work on your own bike there for a small hourly fee, or pay someone who can do it probably twice as fast. It was $ 3.50 for a new tube, and $ 5 for the labor, and i was out the door in about ten minutes. If I ever have any other issues, I’ll definitely bring it back.

Just up the street from Movie Madness, Belmont Community Cycles is accessible from both the Belmont and Mount Tabor communities, providing sales of parts, accessories, and repair. Belmont Community Cycles is most appreciated as a rental space for do-​it-​yourselfers. You can rent space and tools a minimal fee per hour, thus granting you the opportunity to try your hand at fixing your own bike. The mechanics that work here are approachable, friendly and knowledgeable.
And, best of all, not intimidating.
