Very tasty vegan cones. Love coming here for summer. One of a kind place, must try.

Would have been a five except for the inconsistent hours. More than once they caused me existential angst and horror by closing 15 minutes early. Dude with a radio voice raised my self esteem, and the red beans and rice helped me cope with a lack of appetite. The signs are hilarious and instructional. If you’re visiting Portland as I was, eat it once. You wont find something quite like this anywhere else. Veg/carn friendly.

My friend and I noticed Awesome Cone and were intrigued. I liked that it had a conical plant decoration to stress just how much cone action was to be had at this food cart. That was a nice touch. So, the next day, I had to try cones filled with food. I went with a different friend so I had an excuse to go(look, I have friends who want to eat. I’m just not here again because I saw this cone filled with food) and got the mac and cheese cone. The guy who created my mac and cheese cone seemed like a very nice fellow who also took care not to give me a faulty cone that I would crush with my meaty cone-crushing hands or one that would collapse under the epic weight of a mound of cheesy macaronis. I felt like a boss for a little bit — as soon as I received my cone, my friends who had ordered not cones filled with food swarmed me to marvel. «Is that a cone filled with macaroni and cheese? Well played,» said one. My brother later texted me, and overcome with jealousy, obviously couldn’t text straight and typed that it looked«relish.» Someone else commented that she, «wanted to put that in her face.» Wielding such power in my hands did make me feel like king of the food playground today, and, after all, it is a bit like holding a food scepter made of nothing but comfort foods. It’s a great idea sure to make everyone around you jealous. A good thing that will make you feel like a sorcerer or food king for a day. And yes chatting with the guy is awful nice, too!

Wow! What a great way to end a weekend of fantastic food in PDX. Returned to the pod here for more Koi Fusion tacos, and decided to give this truck a try as well. Had the Pig Cone. Filled with yummy spicy pulled pork and cool tasty slaw. Definitely will be back on my next trip.

POISONED! OK, Went to my local Cart Pod, and my favorite spot was closed. Went to Awesome Cone instead. Worst mistake of my life. Owner of the cart(he told me he was the owner) Was wearing a shirt 2 sizes to small with holes in it.(Should have been a red flag, but I missed it) His stomach was sticking out of the shirt, and in a position to come in contact with food preparation(gross) He had a bushy unkempt beard that was not protected from coming into contact with the food. I ordered a cone and ate it. It wasn’t bad, but wasn’t great either, just so so. He’s the problem. Approx 30 mins after I ate the cone, I became violently Ill. Food Poisoning to the bone, and I was out of commission for 24 hours. Do yourself a favor, and go to a food cart that is cleaner. Dont make the same mistake that I did!!!

It’s been said elsewhere that this place is surprisingly good. I concur. But I just wanted to let the vegetarians know that the«r+b cone» of cajun-spiced red beans and rice is only $ 3, and will totally fill you up with amazingly spicy awesomeness that’s fully vegan. If you’re not vegan(perhaps lacto-ovo vegetarian, or simply a carnivore who doesn’t need meat at every meal); I highly recommend sharing one R&B Cone and one Mac & Cheese Cone, trading halfway through. For under $ 10; that is a feast of awesome. Go now! It’s that good!

This place will totally blow your mind. Not only is the food unique(waffle cone with savory insides!) but it is good. AMAZINGLY good. The ‘Pig Cone’ at $ 6 is definitely my favorite(double up on the cole slaw), but the ‘Chicken and Dumplings’ at the same price is a close second. Plus, dude always has waffle cone specials that only a culinary genius could come up with. It is my favorite food cart in Portland.

This place lives up to it’s name. Never mind that the cart is part of a great food cart pod(great layout, plenty of covered/heated tables, live music, lots of food choices) — this place stands on its own. It’s a great concept that will appeal to anyone who loves the sweet & savory combination: savory ingredients wrapped in a sweet waffle cone. Of course, it’s not the concept alone that makes this a great cart, it’s the actual execution. The Pig Cone was fantastic. The pulled pork was obviously of high quality — tender, juicy, and full of flavor. The sweet & tangy sauce was something special — not your average BBQ sauce, and it worked perfectly with the pork and the waffle cone. I am generally not a huge fan of coleslaw, but the best part of the entire meal was the contrast created from the coolness and taste of the coleslaw balanced against the pulled pork and the sweetness from the waffle cone. There is room for improvement: the coleslaw/pulled pork/waffle cone flavor combination only lasted for the initial few bites. After that, it was pulled pork and waffle cone. Yes, it was great — BUT, if there was coleslaw layered throughout, it would be that much better. It really helped balance the flavor, and once the coleslaw was gone things got a little less interesting. If this adjustment happens, Awesome Cone will be 5 stars for sure. And the best part — it’s a great value. $ 5-$ 6 for a filling meal. I think some food carts in the city are starting to forget that they are food carts, and half of what makes them great is value. Awesome Cone does not disappoint here, either. Highly recommended.

In all fairness, my rant about their back in five minutes sign is kind of insane. I guess it’s hard not to fly into Hulk-mode, Awesome Cone’s are just too damn awesome to go without.

I ordered the«Pig Cone»($ 6): a waffle cone stuffed with pulled pork(covered in a sweet, tangy BBQ sauce) and cole slaw. This is the time where we need some gospel music and the right to change the name of the cone from the«Pig Cone» to «The World’s Best Waffle Cone Idea.» Good grief, how to describe this? The BBQ sauce here made a huge statement. It had the tones of sweet and tang, but it also brought a nice spice kick to the party… unexpected, but excellent. The juicy pulled pork and the cole slaw… a harmonious combination. I love that Awesome Cone runs frequent specials. They even have a waffle cone stuffed with chicken and dumplings. Yes, I’d take one of each, and I wish I could go twice on Sundays. I remember my first waffle cone(filled with ice cream, of course) in San Francisco when I was probably about 7 – 8 years old. Chalk up another glorious waffle cone memory about 20 years later.

Everything is better inside a waffle cone. Got a Pig Cone but had to share because that is some tasty intense meat. I’d love to see them get a kid’s waffle cone… just so I don’t over eat.

Who thought savory food in a waffle cone was a good idea? Not this girl. But… wait for it… wait for it… I WASWRONG! Now I think this is a brilliant concept! THECONE: Double deckered and only slightly sweet. STUFFIT options: Zesty Pork and Coleslaw(«Pig Cone») Chicken and Dumplings Savory Tofu Scramble(vegan…most times?) Oh Snap! Red Beans and Rice(Vegan) Specialties of the week: anything from cheesecake to spaetzle with baked apples. *** I had the Pig Cone: Cone half filled with slaw dropped into the bottom, topped with a generous amount of slightly spicy pulled pork with a little more coleslaw to crown it off. I was skeptical of savory food in a sweet cone but patata it was so gooooooood as I wiped a little juicy pork drool off of my chin, I found myself grinning like a fool. The mixture of taking a little bit of the cone and eating it with the savory pork is the way to do it. However… don’t eat your«dish» too fast or you’ll be slurping pork and slaw off the front of your shirt(that is unless you have a meat eating pork lover with you to do it for you). BESTBITE: The last! Yes, a heart attack inducing few last bites of full flavor pulled pork juicings, coleslaw saucings and a little spicey pork grease all soaked into a now miniature delicious waffle cone bite! I will totally do it again just for that last bite. *(insert Homer Simpsons drooling sounds here)*

Awesome Cone totally embodies the creativity we’ve gotten spoiled by on the Portland food cart scene. Who woulda ever thunk to serve pulled pork in a waffle cone? I got me a Pig Cone($ 6).
The top layer of the Pig Cone was the most heavenly joy-inducing coleslaw I have ever bitten into. Deeper in the cone was very densely packed pulled pork, and a lot of it. It was balanced in flavor. If I had any critique to offer of the pulled pork it would be that it might have stood to be a little juicier. But that is entirely my subjective opinion. And it was a pleasant surprise to find more of the delicious coleslaw in the bottom of the cone. Next time I am going for the Chicken and Dumplings cone. One bit of caution — the cones are a bit sloppy(but oh so good) to eat, so I would recommend that you do not attempt to eat one in your car. Instead, enjoy your cone in the covered D-Street Noshery tent that now has a vendor selling dunkels and other beer.

So tonight we went to check out Awesome Cone in their new location at SE32nd and Division. And it was as awesome as ever… I’ll venture to say, perhaps, even more awesome only because AC is now in a pod with Portlands only(to date) BEER cart. Can I just tell you how well Awesome Cones go with Captured By Porches IPA? Well, I shouldn’t have to tell you. Go. Eat. Drink. Be happy.

$ 3 for the Cajun rice and beans cone! Why would you order a waffle cone filled with rice and beans? cause it’s really cheap, that’s exactly why I ordered it. And as far as Cajun rice and beans go, it was kickass.

Awesome Cone’s name sounds like bragging, and it is– but that’s okay, because they back it up with some seriously awesome late night snack food. There are vegan options– the fungus cone is well worth a try– but if you’re an omnivore you’ve got to try the pulled pork and coleslaw cone. By the time you’ve eaten the last little bit of barbecue sauce-infused waffle cone all you can think about is getting another. The owner, Gus, makes everything fresh to order. Not the fastest food cart option, but you can definitely taste the difference, and Gus is a fun guy to chat with while he fixes your cone. There’s even free ice water– served in a little paper cone, of course.

I am still constantly surprised by the creative food that chefs are serving out of the carts. The guy that works here is really cool and very smart. He also makes the cones right in front of you. Savory ingredients in a cone, who would of thought. Well obviously, and luckily for us, this guy did. I walked away with my cone, having a private moment if you will. The oohs and ahhs echoed through the quite neighborhood. The smell of pork wafting from my ingenious concoction. For all of us who have enjoyed the Drumstick ice cream cone, we have had the question of figuring out just the right time to eat that hidden piece of chocolate at the bottom of the cone. Do I take a bite risk the integrity of the cone? Or just be patient. So, what I am saying is, my favorite memory of eating a Drumstick was the chocolate at the bottom. Now it’s the salty bbq pork hidden inside this creation. Thanks dude your cone is definitely the most awesome!

I’ve tried every cone on the menu and none of them disappoint. My personal favorite is half Fungus and half O’Pioneer. It’s sauteed mushroom with rosemary combined with the spaghettios-esque pasta mentioned by Karin below. Super yums. I hear there’s an actual dessert cone in the works, a crème brûlée cone, that’s gonna be killer and I’m totally gonna be back to try it! Also, loving the aesthetics of this truck! Picture perfect.
