Best German food in Broward County! Great German beer selection too. The service was very fast and friendly. We took some out of town guests and man am I glad we did. The portions were huge, big enough to split, but tasty enough you won’t want to.

Excellent food and large portions. Bought the Groupon and was definitely pleased with the service, deal, food, and drink. I had the veal and it was delicious. I would definitely go back.

We loved it! The food is excellent. I had the their famous Schweinhaxen. Excellent choice. The season is perfect. The meat melted in my mouth and the skin is crunchy and wonderful. My wife had the grouper special and it is also good. Chanda, our server is wonderful. She worked her tail off running from one table to the next taking care of us and other customers. She recommended all of our dishes and they are all wonderful. Excellent overall. Definitely will be back.

I highly recommend Checkers Old Munchen if you enjoy German food. We have eaten in this restaurant several times, and it never disappoints. For our appetizer we had the Kombinationen Platte(potato panckaes, bratwurst, knackwurst served with sauerkraut). It was a really nice sized portion, and everything was really delicious. We ordered the jaegerschnitzel for our entrée(pork cutlets with onions and mushrooms), which was absolutely delicious! So tender and tasty! No room for dessert because the portions are very large. But in the past, we have had the homemade apple strudel. Wow, YUMMY! The staff is so friendly and are very helpful in making great suggestions. You will love this restaurant, so stop in as soon as possible!

We bought a Groupon for this place and went last Friday. Service was good, the girl just started so wasn’t completely knowledgable but was friendly and hospitable. We walked in and took the last table available, there seemed to be quite a wait after us. Food was pretty authentic based off of my German friend’s comments. I’d go back again.

Oh. My. Munchen. I happened to see this place while driving around Pompano deciding where to eat dinner. I just happened to catch their little valet sign and figured, you had me at Munchen. They offer valet parking, which is great since the parking situation in Pompano can be a little hectic. Once I entered I forgot I was in South Florida. The entire place is about as authentic as it gets. It just feels like you are in Bavaria. There are steins all over the wall, little boot placards with the names of the«Beer Meister’s» and a little sign that read, «There are no strangers, just friends you haven’t met yet.» This really resonates the level of service you get from the staff. I sat at the bar and ordered a Weissbeer from the several they had on tap. It was amazing. You can tell this place takes their beer very seriously. For dinner I settled on the Schweinshaxen, which is German for delicious, tender, pig leg smothered in a heavenly brown gravy. They braises the pork shanks all day, then fry the outside so it’s crispy on the outside and moist and tender on the inside. The gravy they pour all over it is flavorful and doesn’t overpower, this was all complemented by the buttery goodness of the daily vegetable(green beans and carrots) with some home made mashed potatoes. Being a glutton for punishment I had the German Chocolate Cake for desert with a coffee. I’m lucky I was able to fit in the car on the way home. The piece of cake is huge, comes with two dollops of fresh whipped cream — not that crap from a can, this was the real deal. It was the best German Chocolate Cake I’ve ever had. Not overly chocolate, complemented by that delicious coconut-walnut topping. Do yourself a favor and stop in. You won’t be disappointed.

This place deserves more than 5 stars, The food was on point and nothing short than perfect. Staff was extremely helpful and polite if you are not familiar with German cuisine. When you make it there, make sure to order the sausage sampler and pork shank, it’s to die for… our waiter was the best!

Love this place! Moved to Pompano a few years ago and had to check it out. Checkers Old Munchen has great food and great service. I’ve been here a few times and never been let down. So far I’ve gotten something different every time– meatloaf, bratwurst, beef rolls– and it’s all been incredible! The staff is just as good. I’ve had Chanda on a few occasions and she great, always has good suggestions. I recommend the combo plate for an appetizer.

Of course the food was delicious, filing, and reasonably priced. But, it’s all about the beer. Checkers Old Munchen has a wide variety of German beer on tap. Enough said. One more word, the service was over the top. Friendly, attentive and helpful. Server: Chandra

This place has been dolling out excellent German cuisine for decades. Very authentic fare with outstanding German beer selections. A lot of entrees & appetizers that are mouth wateringly delicious. Be warned, German food is meat & potato based so it can be heavy but that is no knock on Checkers especially if you wash it down with a boot of real beer-not like most of the swill served here in America that is nothing more than a poor attempt at imitating fine art. Be hungry when you go, enjoy yourself & then go find a nice place to digest afterwards. Repeat when necessary.

Increased by two stars because I came again with my wife and sat at a table. Much better experience. If you plan to eat then sit at a table. On busy nights I recommend a reservation. ******** After two visits in the last two weeks I’m compelled to write this review. I believe three things make a great restaurant/bar and if one of them is way off then the entire experience is only remembered for that. Food/Beer: The schweinshaxe was so good I ordered it both times. The cold potato salad, mashed potatoes and sauerkraut were all great sides. It’s everything you’d expect from this dish. The meat was easy to find and the skin was a delight. I had a Pilsner to wash it down and that was also excellent. Atmosphere: The place it littered with customer owned steins. You can have you own personal stein and they will put it on a shelf for safe keeping. Decorations and location are all good. Service: this is where they lost it for me. The below covers both trips: — waited 5 minutes at the bar while the servers avoided eye contact, talked to each other and played with their phones — I had ta ask for fork, knife and napkin — I had to ask for bread — I had to ask for the bogo coupon that they give out on Mondays. It’s a shame that 2 out of three is still just 66%. Fail.

worth the 45 minutes wait –we did not make reservation our airbag host suggested the place for gate to tell us it is real popular Great beer selection giant original German beer mugs decorating the walls everywhere Appetizers on table warm/soft pretzels with mustard on the side We ate weal viener snitzel it was tender with the choice of at least 10 side dishes like German potato salad cold or warm red cabbage etc. Drank from the super selection of beer my wife had German rizibizi wine The warm apple strudel with ice cream cinnamon and whipped cream we shared was awesome The only dissapontment was the unpersonal red haired young lady who offered the coveted outdoor table to people arrived after us also without reservation/when my wife complained she just made facial expressions and instead of explaining apologizing just showed to our inside tables courtly. I would have give 5 stars otherwise We will be back for the other delicious very appetizing dishes were delivered to other tables Fir danke

Five stars. Great beer. It doesn’t take much to have a great German restaurant. Start with pretty waitresses in drindls. Add a variety of German beers on tap with the proper glassware(they had boots!). And then finish with proper German foods. And when you put all of that together, you’ll land at Checkers Old Munchen. We were here during late September, which of course is the high season time for Oktoberfest so the place was pretty well packed. Fortunately, my Dad had planned ahead with a reservation. I would strongly recommend that you do the same, especially during the regular tourist season. This is a popular spot. With our beers to start, the staff gave us a super nice breadbasket. Slices of a nice white bread and a heavy pumpernickel, plus several bit sized bits of a pretzel with a little pot of hot mustard for dipping. Very nice. As for the beers, well, they were just great. Real German drafts. I had a Schofferhausen that I’d never seen before. Possibly my new favorite beer. We had two orders of weinerschnitzel, which were huge pieces as big as the large plate. I had the pork shank and while there was a lot of very tasty meat on the bone, there was also a huge pile of gristle that I stacked up on the side. Not the best one I’ve ever had, but still very good. The hot potato salad and the red cabbage were excellent. Dessert? You’re kidding, right?

Im into it. Love German food, so hard to turn me off: had a great grapefruit wheat beer– tasted like orange soda! Shnitzel, spaetzle and red cabbage with mushroom gravy was hearty, warm and tasty. The staff were friendly and you could tell they have a small and loyal clientele. I think we will be back– especially because its close to home. German hospitality– danke!

I don’t give 5 stars lightly. But the food is THAT good. And when you factor the service and atmosphere, it’s an easy decision. We were shopping in the area. I figured we should use the gift certificate that I’ve carried around since December. If I knew how delicious everything would be, I’d have used the certificate when I printed it! We ordered: Appetizer: Combinationen Platte $ 10: brats, knocks and potato pancakes. It was served with sauerkraut, red cabbage, sour cream, applesauce and brown mustard. For the first time ever I loved the sausage as much as hubby! It was creamy smooth — fine ground meat, free of hard chunks of fat, that was spiced well. Entrée: Schweinhaxen $ 14: A 2 pound pork shank that’s boiled and then roasted for 6 hours. It has a chicharron outside and a juicy inside. The glaze of homemade gravy gilded the lily! It was served with pan fried spaetzel(so much better than the mushy pasta worms I’ve had elsewhere) and red cabbage. You can pick 2 sides — these are the ones we picked. Entrée: Stuffed wienerschnitzle sandwich $ 9: breaded, fried veal, black forest ham and provolone cheese with lettuce, tomato and mayo on fresh pumpernickel bread and German potato salad.(Maria, our server suggested I get the salad served hot — it’s bacon, onion, vinegar and potatoes. I usually dislike potato salad so that’s a huge compliment to the chef!) After splitting the combo plate, we were pretty much full. We decided to taste the entrees and then take it to go. But the mouthfuls of juicy pork and crunchy, salty skin were too good to stop eating. Until we tried the sandwich. We took turns picking up half of the sandwich to have ‘just one more bite”. Finally we asked for boxes. By this time, I called Mom and told her we were bringing her food. We wanted her to taste this food! We ordered the same sandwich and an apple strudel. We ordered a slice of German chocolate cake to taste and take the rest to go. Maria told us that the rich, dense chocolate cake was made by her coworker. What a great recipe! We had our fill of the generously sliced cake with whipped cream and chocolate sauce before taking the rest to go. So, I’m not going to cook anytime soon. And we are going to eat like kings. Considering that hubby’s Mom was from Germany and that he lived in Germany for a bit, he has a better idea of what this food should taste like than me. But we are both dazzled by the chef’s dishes. Maria gave us coupons for future visits. We can’t wait to return!

I have driven past Checkers for years and have been wanting to try it for a while, finally my hubby agreed to go for dinner after putting if off for so long. The restaurant is small and cozy, service is very friendly and attentive, most of the clientele are obvious regulars which the staff knows well, everyone is treated like they’ve known you for years. We sat at the bar and were promptly greeted and served a bread basket, they only serve beer and wine but they have a nice selection of German beers and many types of wines to choose from. The food is made fresh and servings are huge. I tried the Goulash and selected the beans and potato salad as my side, it was excellent and so large I took most of it home. My hubby ordered the Bavarian platter with sauerkraut, I had a bite and it was delicious, he was also very pleased with his dinner. We are adding Checkers as one of our regular local casual restaurants.
