Unsure of how this place worked, I first asked if they sold by the glass, which they do. Then I asked if they had a list, and they did not. She sort of chuckled and asked what I wanted, and I asked for some Syrah or something like it. She opened a new bottle for me, and poured some to taste. My husband asked for something white and fruity, and she had him taste a nice sav. blanc. I held my breathe for the price tag, as no list = no price ahead of time and wine can get expensive. $ 7/each, wow! They have a bar and a few tables throughout. They also have a small bottle shop. We grabbed a window table and sat watching people walk by while oldies played on the PA. Definitely the most unpretentious wine bar I have ever been to, which was refreshing! I think this will become a favorite spot, especially since it’s super close to my new house. Can’t wait!

Shelly is the lady to go to if you need wine advice, she has an exceptional palette! There are so many wineries in the surrounding counties and if you dont quite know which to go to, youre in luck, the Wine Smith carries many varietals from many of the surrounding wineries. Saves you a trip of driving all over the place! I reccomend asking about the Barberas, there are a ton to chose from and they are delicious! Pop in and buy a bottle to go, or sit and enjoy the ambiance and have a glass and some great company.

All the local wines(and some beers) in one place, for close to the prices you’ll pay at the wineries. Plus… great local bands. Wish they had food, though I realize why they don’t. Cozy place, encourages table sharing and getting to know each other. Lots of fun! Friendly, knowledgeable people working there and guests always seem in the mood to make new acquaintances. Open mic night is really fantastic! Bring a guitar or harmonica. We saw a 3 Piece w/an upright bass — so cool! It’s so refreshing to hear real musicians, not just screaming drunk girls at karaōke night.

This place was awesome. Tastings were reasonable and the pours were more than fair, everyone was knowledgeable about the wines they poured, and there was a great selection. I was staying at the Carey House down the block and without a wine opener. I walked back to have The Wine Smith open the bottle I bought hours earlier, and they were playing corn hole in the back! All the locals were loving life and the atmosphere was great. HIGHLY recommended, especially with the current Unilocal!deal.

Absolutely great place to stop in and have a beer or a glass of wine. I personally loved the fact that they had North Coast Brewery Ale. My wife loved and bought a bottle of their Chardonnay made by a local winery. The owner was very nice and helpful showing us the wines. Also available are cookbooks and wine accessories. When you are in Placerville, this place is a must. Evening music by local musicians.

The Wine Smith is such a quaint little place to hang out in. They guided me towards the wines I preferred and poured me a glass. There are plenty of tables and seating. healthy mix of friendly locals and tourists. They also have beer and I was impressed that they carried Alagash. I ended up purchasing a bottle of Beemer’s Zinfandel and I was very happy with it. Props to them for their fantastic: $ 20 for $ 10 deal.

While it is a great place to pick up some local wines, I love the beers they have, too. Usually the Old Hangtown they have on tap is great. Give it a try.

So much fun. I just performed there and didn’t know what to expect. I was very surprised with how nice everyone was as well as the great selection of fine adult beverages. I’m not much of a wine drinker, but the beer selection was great and tasty. My band mates and I were treated like royalty and the place had a great welcoming vibe to it. I will be back there again.

What a charming little gem in the rough! We stopped through the town of Placerville to let the traffic towards Sacramento coming from Tahoe die down for a while, and we were a little surprised to see a wine bar with such spirit and value. The wines available are a gooding sampling of the wines from the area around Placerville, and they’ve got quite a tasty selection of Belgian ales. We had never considered Placerville before, but now that we know about this little wine bar, we may seek out a place to stay in the area and get to know the area better… with some refueling and rest in between at The Wine Smith of course.

I just went in here for my second time(in about 2 years), and each time they have been really knowledgeable about my tastings with the information I gave them. We found some very good wines, at reasonable prices, and purchased a few. We will be back!

The Wine Smith is my neighbor! Practically… I live in the neighborhood behind it. The wines are awesome. the atmosphere is great, but the people that it draws and the people that work there are even BETTER! Live music too… it’s pretty full most of the time, so get a table early! We had more than enough fuel to get home… Needing to stretch our legs wasn’t really a concern… And with a hearty breakfast we didn’t stop for food… No… We stopped because no weekend getaway/roadtrip is complete(in my mind) without an indulgent splash of wine. Or three. And more beer. Under HIGH recommendation from an avid wine enthusiast we’d met at the bar at Sierra-At-Tahoe, we made a point of finding this wine shoppe. This cozy boutique merchant is an amazing find/fixture along Main Street of the little town of Placerville! Shelly(the proprietor) and her charming shoppe have a personality and character that could only be fostered away from [snootier] big cities… In addition to the extensive offerings of wine and requisite connoisseur’s various hardware and knick-knacks, the shoppe also caters to the beer drinker’s palate by offering a refrigerator of upscale and craft beers, as well as a varied selection of beers on tap! Delerium Tremens Brother Thelonius Abbey Chimay Peres Trappiste Dupont Moinette Duvel Moortgat to name but a few… A group of dining tables and chairs in the center of the room is a clear and welcome invitation to spend more than a passing moment here and enjoy a flight or taste of wine or beer. The small bar/counter at the back of the room conveys a less formal option and casual reprieve from the usual ceremony of «wine tasting»(which I find sometimes a little sententious). The best part of the Wine Smith experience is definitely the owner, Shelly. Her enthusiasm and insight led us to tastes and samplings of some delicious vintages, not to mention fun and witty conversations on everything from photography to politics and business… Good drink, good talk, good company. Simple pleasures! We’ll be back! There are supposedly a number of [wine] tasting rooms in the area… I think we need to make a weekend of it. Starting at The Wine Smith. ______________________ Placerville: a place, admittedly, I thought existed only in myths… like Narnia… and Fresno! But it’s real, and pretty nice…

The Wine Smith is AWESOME!!! They’re under new ownership and have already made some wonderful improvements, with more to come. They have a excellent selection of wine, port, and some great beer to boot! Shelly has a nice vision for the store and she’s a true connoisseur of fine wine. You can’t go wrong stopping by for Shelly’s advice on which wine to serve to impress your guests! Stop by for a drink or a bottle and you’ll see what I mean. Great folks and excellent wines!
