Besides being an adorable shop, with some beautiful boards, Stu was really great to learn from. He was a great teacher, and very chill to talk to. Yay!!!
As I’ve continued to surf, Stu has been really supportive, giving me tips on great spots to try, and suggesting solutions as I struggle to continue improving.

This is not your typical surf shop! To often surf culture and surf shops are overrun by egos, this is not the case for Shell Beach Surf Shop. Regardless of if you’re just learning or if you’ve been shredding for decades everyone that I met through this shop is stoked on surfing and happy to be helpful with anything you may need. All are welcome! All hail Shell Beach Surf Shop!!!

1-​Clothing– Stu (the owner) has a wide selection of Women’s, Men’s and Children’s clothing, including, sweatshirts, t-​shirts, button downs, pull overs, shorts, dresses, bathing suits and all those cool surfer type of «hoodies» we all wore in high school.
2-​Beach toys for purchase– a small but nice selection of high end toys, along with boogie boards and a ridiculous selection of surf boards which apparently is what Stu does, now that follow the shops facebook page… wow!
3-​Everything you could possibly need for your board, wetsuit or you (not joking) wax, lotion, stickers, booties, jewelery, on and on.
4-​The shop was set up beautifully, super clean, well organized, «very cool and old school» but also efficient and modern. Stu had everything any customer needed (we were in the store a few times and heard him helping other folks)
5-​Lessons! We took a private surfing lesson for my two boys (8 + 10). First time ever out in the ocean and on a board. I literally can not say enough about Stu, he is AMAZING. Calm, funny, cool. Made you instantly feel that you would trust your children with him. The boys had an amazing connection with him.
You come in the night before to pick up your wetsuit and then meet him at the beach the next morning. He goes through some instruction and stretching first and then takes one out at a time.
He had my son standing up and surfing on THE FIRST WAVE/​FIRST TRY!
This was the absolute highlight of our trip. The boys did not stop talking about it and STU! And were crushed that we did not stop and say good bye to him when we left at the end of the week.
Bottom line, if you want to purchase, rent or do anything related to the beach/​ocean and a board, go talk to Stu.

got a board repaired through SBSS. The work was quality and the price was reasonable. This shop has everything I need and some things I want. Good selection of cold weather jackets. I picked up a cool hat from them. I also compared the pricing for fins against other local shops in the area and SBSS were better. This shop represents the true surfing lifestyle. Local and they still give a damn.

We had a fantastic experience surfing for our first time. Stu is a great teacher, very patient and encouraging. We all had a great time and can’t wait to go back. I would highly recommend this surf shop and Stu as an instructor!

Helpful & friendly shop. Surf lesson with Steven was helpful– lots of little tips & tricks. Reasonable prices too.

Not only did we find a wet suit for my freezing blue lipped daughter :) but after I left my purse in the fitting room (it’s a lot of work to help a 9 year old try on 2 wet suits), they kept it safe & helped get it to me in S. CA so I could fly home. What great customer service!!! The world needs more honest people like them!

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about this place. Stu was an amazing instructor. He’s super patient and does not get frustrated. He has such a laid back attitude which makes him really likable.
I signed up for his surf camp and it was easily the best decision I’ve made so far. Stu has a natural knack for teaching and after many failed attempts, I was able to ride out my first wave on my first day. He’s very good at continuing to encourage you to go back out there and he always gives advice on how to better balance yourself on the board so you’ll be able to ride out the wave. He gets just as excited as you when you catch a wave. While surfing did take a lot out of me, I did not mind waking up at 8 the next day to do it all again. It was a lot of fun and definitely worth it.
All of the instructors were equally as great as Stu. They were all extremely patient and offered nothing but encouragement. Josh, Steve, and Michelle were all smiles and were more than happy to help all of us. Definitely a great team of people.

We visited the store over the forth of July weekend. We were on the coast for a baseball tournament for my oldest son. He had just finished his game when we went into the store. The owner recognized his Clovis high jersey cause he had grown up in the area. He offered my son any shirt in the store to trade him shirts «world cup style». It was great fun and a great memory. The owner and his employee were both super friendly and will make sure we support his store everytime we are in town.

My son took his first ever surf lesson and had great things to say about Stu, his instructor. Very patient and knowledgeable with 30 years of surfing experience. My son enjoyed his 2 hr lesson… he now wants to do Stu’s Surf Camp… its definitely worth the drive from Southern CA… and did we mention Shell Beach Surf Shop? They have a wide variety of selections from surfing gears, swim wear to cool summer outfits. Both Stu and Sam are very helpful and friendly. Their customer service is above par that every dollar we spent in the shop was worth it! We would definitely be coming back!

I love this place. The service is fantastic! The owner, Stu, is just a really great guy and visiting his surf shop is an experience. Locals love it, visitors love it. All kinds of cool stuff for purchase and he offers surf lessons. I did a lesson with Stu and he really spends time teaching you about the ocean and the art of surfing, and prides himself in getting people up on the board in their first lesson! I did, my husband did! I’ve had friends that have had their kids take lessons here and they loved it. This shop is a fantastic central coast find, worth stopping in! :)

Cannot say enough good things about these guys. Booked lessons for myself, my buddy, and his 15 yr old son, and we all had a top notch experience at the shop and morning in the water.
Stu, the owner, is a super nice, laid back guy who got us suited up the day prior to our lesson, and arranged for our instructor to meet us at our hotel the next morning to surf. All our dealings with Stu on the phone or in person were fantastic.
Next morning, our instructor, Jamie, showed up right on time with the boards, and we headed straight to the water. Really nice and patient guy, walked us through the basics and got us in the water. He spent a bunch of time helping us get up on the waves, giving tips and advice, and always had a smile on his face giving encouragement.
Spent a couple hours in the water and headed out. Hung out with Jamie over a cup of coffee finding out about the local scene, swapping stories, etc. Great guy and you can tell he loves what he does.
If you’re heading to Pismo and thinking about some surf lessons or rentals, you can’t go wrong with this place. If/​when we go back down that way, will definitely be hitting these guys up again.

This is definitely the place to come for surfing. I signed up for the surf lessons and I almost felt bad he had to teach me. But he was really patient & friendly! The person working at the shop was really sweet too. If I were to come back to pismo again, I would totally come back to Stu. Highly recommended, no doubt!

I thought this was just a tourist shop until a manufacturer put me on to it. The owner, Stu, is great to work with and really stays on top of the things you want/​need. Some real cool and interesting shapes in their small board stock. Carries eco-​friendly brands. Really good place to go for surf travel gear. Way better attitude than the surf «style» shops.

I was visiting from out of town, so I stopped by to rent a surfboard, and the guy working there rented me a decent fun shaped board to ride. The service was good and friendly. The price was fair. But, I left my driver’s license and credit card at the shop. No problem… when I called, the guy remembered me and mailed my credit card and driver’s license back to me. Thanks Shell Beach Surf Shop!
