So it looks like Palo Alto Grill has been shut down for good. Not too surprising, as there were never many people in there(the couple times we went we were one of 2 parties in the restaurant). Hopefully something awesome takes it’s place… or Miyake returns! I can only dream…

Happy Hour is 50% off all drinks! The vibe is pretty mellow, but the funny part is how they treated us when we walked in. I visited on a Thursday for happy hour, we asked to be seated for a group and the person at the front asked for a moment… the restaurant was completely empty, I don’t know what the host was doing but it was more important than seating patrons. Other than that everything was fabulous, not to say the greeting was dismal, it was just … pretty funny. The food we ordered was delectable and so cheap with the happy hour prices, the drinks were the same, the margaritas were $ 5.00 and simply delicious. We all tried a few different drinks and I did not come across one I did not enjoy, the moscow mule is perfection as well! I would recommend this place since their happy hour isn’t too packed it becomes great for groups!

A mixed bag — a few great dishes but the rest marred by too much salt and so-so service. This was our first visit — the menu looked eclectic and interesting. We ordered: — Avocado corndogs — pretty good — Chicken waffle bites — so-so(waffles a bit dry and overcooked) — Lacquered Duck legs — outstanding! — Triple cooked fries — very good — Artichoke soup — decent, but have had better — Baby butter lettuce salad — dressing too salty — Masala subbed scallops — good concept and had good tastes, but way too salty(mostly in the greens I think) — Salmon poke — ok, but salty — Skirt steak — first one was overcooked, sent it back and second was better — but also too salty Our server was generic — talked about how«we» are doing, pretty clear he wasn’t interested in how we were doing. Not very personable. When he asked how everything was at the end, I was starting to say something about the saltiness, but he was already on his way somewhere else. Given the price tag of the meal, this should have been a much better experience.

I am not too fond of this place after taking my boyfriend here for his birthday. Although service was average, I did not experience the stellar experience that other reviewers have wrote about. Our server was nice but it was very bare minimal and was not comparable to other high-end restaurants I have dined at. As for the food, we both had ordered steaks and the one that is most popular, was really not that great as I have much had better at many other places. I cannot even remember the name of the entrees we ordered as they were completely unmemorable. There was not a lot of flavor within and the rub on the outside was very, very salty. Too salty. Although tender, our steaks tasted plain and boring and left me feeling disappointed as wished I had gone with the other steakhouse that I had been debating between. When asked if they did anything for birthdays, our server said all they do is write happy birthday on a plate if we ordered desserts. Nothing special. There are many other good options to dine at in the area so wouldn’t recommend this restaurant for a nice steak dinner.

Big fan of this place! My sister was looking for mother’s day reservations just days before the actual day, and we were lucky enough to lock a reservation for the 8 of us the night before. Got there and our table was set and ready to go. No waiting around. Our server, which my 2 year old daughter referred to as «lady» aka Karyn? was very friendly and helpful in explaining the specials, making drink recommendations, checking on us often, refilling the water, and working with our special requests which I’ll get into shortly. Cocktails: Moscow Mule — cold solid drink served in a copper mug Cucumber Yuzu Drop — presentation created some«oohs and ahhhs» when it came out. Very refreshing! Appetizer: Charcuterie Board — nice little selection of cheeses and meats, some grapes, and fig? Nothing over the top, but good. Main Dishes: Le Steak Frites — PERFECTLY cooked medium rare, easy to cut, juicy, lots of flavor The«Everything’s Better…» — Again, cooked perfectly medium rare filet with great flavor Seared Striped Bass with Mussels — Fresh bass seared perfectly, mussels were very fresh, but the green garlic sauce didn’t work. Too tart according to my wife. Special Request: As soon as we sat down, my daughter was hungry and getting anxious so we asked our server if she could put in Mac n Cheese but with out the Poblano. To our surprise, my daughter’s food came out when the appetizers arrived… plain mac n cheese made with some quality cheese, truffle fries, and a fried hotdog shaped like an octopus. My daughter loved it!!! If you like your meat’s finished with some sort of a reduction or sauce, you’ll like this place. Great for groups, date night, and surprisingly good for kids as well. We’ll be back again!

First things first… RIP Miyake. Some fun and interesting times were had during my(and my friends’) college years. Sake bombs, blaring music, strobes, smoke machines, standing on chairs… oh to be young again. But now, Miyake has been replaced by Palo Alto Grill, a decidedly more refined space, with a more upscale type of menu. I like the space. A little more warm and intimate, cleaner overall. Not the kind of place I expect lots of college kids to be living it up anymore. We brought my gf’s mom here for Mother’s Day. First off, the service was generally great. Everyone who served us was friendly and attentive. Apparently, they had lost our reservation and weren’t going to give us a table, but the manager remedied that for us and aside from that, no issues whatsoever. The food was okay. Certainly nothing was bad by any means. But nothing really knocked our socks off either. I do like the pretzel epi that came in the bread basket, though I am not a mustard person so the mustard cheese sauce accompanying was not my thing. Lobster and squash pot pie was also pretty good, with a top and bottom crust(!!!), like a creamy cioppino-type thing. Striped bass with mussels and squid ink gnocchi was just okay. Fries were likewise alright. In the back of my mind, the sentimental attachment I have to Miyake has me a little bit sad. But Palo Alto Grill is a nice replacement and I’d come back again.

For those that remember the old, open-spaced Miyake, Palo Alto Grill is a vision. Modern, sleek and completely remodeled, the space is the perfect spot for a power lunch or business dinner. The corner spot location on University Avenue is a great location and it’s clear that Palo Alto Grill is shooting for University Avenue flagship status. We arrived for a late lunch and although the lunch menu is limited compared to the dinner menu, there are appetizer, salad, burgers, and steak offerings. Service is professional and both drink(Arnold Palmer) and water refills were plentiful. Fried Brussel Sprouts — one of their most popular appetizers and a great start for the meal. Deep fried with brown sugar, the Brussel sprouts are served with a trio of three quality salts that aren’t really that necessary but add to the presentation. The diced walnut bits and crunchiness of the sprouts go together well also. Peppercorn Burger — chose the fries and happy with the thick cut and nicely fried potatoes. A few pieces had black ends from the potato having gone bad(please cut those off) but the fries were still quite good. The house made ketchup was excellent. The burger was cooked a bit closer to medium(no red) than the requested medium rare but coated nicely with peppercorns and served on a great brioche bun and with great pickles. Squash and Vegetable Pot Pie — $ 19. Went for the added lobster option(+12) but while it was the most tantalizing sounding option, this was the biggest disappointment of the meal. A bowl of cream sauce and vegetables is topped with a phylo dough and even judged as just a vegetable pot pie, the flavor was disappointing and off. As for the lobster, I wasn’t expecting Michael Mina’s $ 75 lobster pot pie, but I’ve had frozen Hancock Gourmet shipped lobster pot pie that blew away the pot pie here and had 10 times the lobster meat. Lobster meat was almost impossible to find(perhaps a claw tip?) and the brown, alcohol reduced sauce just didn’t match with the white, creamy sauce I’m used to for pot pies in either flavor or execution. Overall, we had a mixed meal at Palo Alto Grill. It’s a gorgeous space and has a prime location. The appetizer was great and the Peppercorn Burger was solid. But the squash and lobster pot pie was a true big miss. While that can happen at any restaurant, Palo Alto Grill entrée prices are definitely on the high side($ 49 ribeye) that only expense accounts or great execution can allow. With a Happy Hour and dinner promotions, maybe a return visit is on the cards, but we’re sticking to the burgers and steaks. Palo Alto Grill accepts credit cards including American Express.

This is a solid 4 star establishment. Nice ambience, creative menu, great service, not your average waitstaff. Menu is very simple, but the kind of menu where everything sounds so good, you can’t decide. FRIEDBRUSSELSPROUTS — Funny, this is their signature dish, but this is the only dish I didn’t care for. Kudos to the chef for the idea to prep the dish this way, but a little too dry and overcooked for me. The bitterness from the char is too much and overpowers the dish. SPICE-RUBBEDSCALLOPS — Nicely done. We all tried, and we all approved. CHARREDOCTOPUS — Maybe my favorite. Not too many places out there that offer charred octopus on their menu. Really good. Small portion. Wish we ordered two of this dish. AVOCADOCORNDOGS — I am a sucker for anything on the menu with«corn dog» in the title. And being a huge avocado fan, I had to order these. Perfect little mouthfuls of deliciousness. I can hardly fault this restaurant. Look forward to returning someday soon. Want to try the Mac n Cheese and some of their grilled meats.

Came here with my cousin, whom I am just meeting for the first time. Long story I won’t bore you with, but suffice it to say, I had no idea what she likes, had never been to the PA Grill, so a day full of unknowns. It turns out we had lots in common, including most of our taste in food. Must be something to that genetics stuff! The waiter was incredibly good looking, but didn’t let that get in the way of providing excellent service. It was a late lunch, and here’s what we had: We shared the fried brussel sprouts. I was afraid they might be too sweet with the brown sugar, but not to worry. They were addictive. I had the small plate masala rubbed scallops with edamame hummus. Each of the elements was good by itself, and the scallops were perfectly cooked, but with the two strong spice contributors battling against each other, the scallops got a little lost. I would vote for something a little milder to rub on. My cousin had the seared tuna and greens, which she raved about. Both of these were considered small plates, but were plenty to constitute lunch. The interior remodel completely changed the feel in here, in a good way. I will return. Food: 31⁄40 Service: 19⁄20 Atm/intangibles: 18⁄20 Value: 17⁄20 Overall: 85⁄100

The food is good, albeit a bit pricey for what it is. I have been here twice, once for a late dinner and again for a late lunch. Main takeaways are that the brussels sprouts were the BEST I’ve ever had. I also enjoyed a fried shrimp appetizer because it was nicely crispy and well seasoned. I had the BLT for lunch and it was really quite tasty, although literally hard in my mouth(does that sound dirty?). The bread is a nice nutty mixed bread that’s toasted and can give the roof of your mouth a few painful scrapes. The bacon is crispy and maple-y delicious. The tomato was the perfect size and meatiness. My only complaint was that there was not enough lettuce/greens. It would also be nice if I could add avocado to this… mmm maybe I’ll ask next time. That might make it better. I opted for fries to go with the BLT, and I didn’t enjoy them that much. I just don’t like thick cut fries, but I liked that I was brought a sampler of salts to add to my fries if I wanted. Nice touch, but rather unnecessary and a waste of good salt. The fries were crispy if a bit dry. I like sitting at the bar and all the servers are excellent. I always feel well taken care of and attended to which I appreciate. The chef is a great guy too. I’ll be back to support this business and get more brussels sprouts.

Lets be fair. Ordered four dishes: two small plates and two entrees for lunch. One small plate and one entrée were a bit off, however the service was good! Friendly and patient with my questions. Japanese octopus is not what we were expecting. The texture is not gummy at all, even though the flavor was pretty well infused, the entire dish is a big turnoff. I asked them how did they cook the octopus, waiter asked the chef, answer is «poached». But poached octopus shouldn’t have such texture, it’s more like a leftover from previous night! Scallop is very good! Not overcooked and very sweet! They taste fresh and juicy! The peppery caramelized crust on top brings up the flavor, with edamame hummus, was totally a plus. Halibut, ye fish itself is also poached in olive oil, tender and fresh. The bed of risotto has good balance of flavor, the saltiness of olives and a bit citrusy from cherry tomatoes. However the olive oil is a bit too much, you can see from the picture below. Chicken salad: firstly, I don’t know who did the plating, but it is just awkward. Chicken breast is moist and flavorful, especially the crispy skin. Salad dressing is okay, better than most of the Caesar dressing, not very salty. But after all, this dish is awkward. After all, I will come back for the scallop but not for the leftover octopus.

So glad the ruckus and tacky Miyake was replaced. This incarnation however is almost a 180 from the old tenant. It is now dark, up scale in an old money sense. Not quite my cup of tea, but fits in this hood. The food is good with a bent toward the steak. They use quality beef here and from what I’ve tried, they know how to mess with it. Preps are not your basic steak house feel or look. They don’t just plop a seared steak onto a platter here, but rather there is a very modern approach and in my opinion it is creative yet approachable. Steak Frites $ 28 Nicely seared and tender Hangar Steak, then sliced atop a Bordelaise Sauce. The house fries were legit, thickish cuts and properly executed with a golden crisp and fluffy interior. The lengths kinda varied, which made some quite crispy while others more potato-y. Seared Scallops $ 28 Awesome specimens from the East Coast(I believe). Quite large, naturally sweet and juicy and most importantly properly seared. I barely noticed the Citrus Beurre Blanc but the garnish of trout roe proved effective as it added another dimension of brininess. Fried Kale also was an interesting accompaniment as it added a textural component and the browned butter flavor went well with these gems of the sea. Fried Brussel Sprouts $ 7 Very interesting prep. Halved sprouts are deep fried so the leaves get charred. Almost leaves a bitter sensation then the maple and pecans kick in to balance the flavor. Almost like having dessert as your vegetable. The Wilderness $ 34 Prime Dry Aged Strip Loin with a Mushroom Herb Butter. The beef here was top notch, in flavor and texture. Solid beef flavor with a spring in every bite. They seriously char the exterior to give that primal campfire effect. The butter would of been a lot more effective if the dish would of been warmer. Actually my main gripe with our experience here was that our food was barely warm at arrival, so within several bites in, the entire plate was cold. The food is still tasty as heck and I can’t complain about the service. I just hope this area supports this new venture, cuz I would most definitely like to come back once they establish themselves.

I would have never gotten to try Palo Alto Grill until my Unilocal friend Ingrid invited me to come here after the YEE event at Fleming’s. Also accompanying us tonight was my new Unilocal friend, Ruth. Hey Ruth… if you’re reading this. I know that this place used to be a Miyake back in the old days but now it’s an intimate dining spot with private rooms and a bar inside. I tried the brussels sprouts, the miso glazed carrots, and the peppercorn burger sliders with homemade pickles. Wow, wow, wow! Everything tasted so good and cooked with such care. And it was later in the evening too as we got there before they were closing. To end the meal, I tried one of the brioche beignets prepared by Yoomi the pastry chef. It was a perfect ending to a great meal. The entire meal was high quality and although the prices of the food can discourage people like me for coming, I believe that it’s worth trying. I’m hoping that I can come back here for another meal or maybe happy hour.

I love how clean and cute everything inside the restaurant is. The bathroom smells like lavender and I love their hand lotion. Pork belly was super tender but a little on the salty side. I am not a fan of the grill octopus but I like the baby potatoes that came with it. The texture of the octopus was just off for me. As for the entrée, we tried Skirt Steak with mushroom, twice baked potato and friend brussels sprouts. It was ALL so delicious! I LOVE them ALL! As for dessert, we liked the carmel apple tart with puff pastry over the espresso cheesecake. Overall, it was such a great experience with excellent service and most importantly great good! We will for sure come back soon!

After checking into the nearby Westin for our date-weekend, the wife and I made the short walk to downtown P.A. to grab a late dinner. We stopped at this corner and made the sudden realization that Miyake was gone.(No loss there). And here in its place was a swank-looking steak house. Feeling carnivorous and adventurous, we ambled inside(after I briefly checked the Unilocal rating, of course.) It started badly when one host(owner?) greeted us, pointed to a beautiful window table and said, «Best seat in the house!» But then the hostess behind him shook her head vigorously and led us to a somewhat crowded and loud spot along a back wall(Wow…immediate table downgrade for new patrons = a major no-no). We didn’t like that spot, so we picked a roomier table in the bar area. One star loss for really bad form in the greeting category . It’s a good thing the rest of the meal was fabulous and our waiter was over-the-top great(25% tip great). My wife had the«the Californian» with skirt steak, crab salad, peas and avocado. Love at first sight, plus a big smile on her face. I had the«Southern Gentleman» with pan-seared filet mignon, bacon-infused mustard greens, and bourbon BBQ sauce. Absolute steak meal perfection. 5 stars for this by itself. But then there was the beer list — the really pathetic one. Just a few boring beers on tap; only one IPA(but they were out of it), plus a bottle list you could find at any Applebee’s. No excuse guys — it’s 2013. One more star loss. So I drank wine instead. At least the Pinot I chose went quite well with the steak. Note to Palo Alto Grill: With an improved beer list and some hostess re-training on basic etiquette, you could be a 5-star place in my book in no time. Someday you might even be a replacement for my beloved Empire Tap Room(RIP April 2013)

Don’t let the name fool you, this isn’t *just* another steakhouse… Was invited to dine here a few weeks prior and quickly glanced at the menu before heading out that night. Figured it would be another one of those hoity-toity Palo Alto restaurants with dim lighting that serves high quality meat. Don’t get me wrong, I love a fancy filet mignon! You’re talking to a Midwesterner here. But Palo Alto Grill is oh, so much more. Trust. With a chef who’s worked at two iconic South Bay eateries: Baume and Cigare Volant, two very different concepts but both delivering gourmet dishes, you know it’s gonna be good. Add in a talented pastry chef at his side and you’re going to get a unique, sophisticated menu. Even the names of the dishes don’t quite explain the flavors or the gorgeous presentation that will be brought out to the table. What we had: + Bread basket with«Epi pretzel» and flavored salts: If this is how dinner starts, you can only imagine where it’s going to go from here. + Avocado corn dog: Something I remembered from my last trip down to Bonny Doon! + Slow poached egg w/English pea, mushroom and shallot: Absolutely divine. Looks like something out of a story book. + Yellow Crudo«Watercolor»: Goes in the Top 5 most gorgeous plate I’ve ever had. , flavors all mesh well together. + Crispy Brussels Sprouts: No wonder I can’t get them to taste this delicious at home, they’re slightly fried. + Poached Halibut w/lemon foam: Normally, I am not a foam lover, but this one wasn’t overpowering or offensive. It really did add an extra«umph» to the dish. + Palo Alto Grill Surf ‘n’ Turf w/crab salad and avocado butter: If I could marry a dish, this would be it. Nothing on this plate that I didn’t like. Well cooked meat, savory crab, butter. Taking simple food and adding an elegant twist makes me happy. Of course there was also room for one dessert. OK, maybe two. + Chocolate Torte w/Yuzu caramel and gelato: This was the +1’s favorite. Sprinkle just a wee bit of salt on that bad boy! + Meringue and peach tart: Not a huge meringue fan, but this was prepared perfectly. Not too crusty and not too marshmallowy. And the tart crust? Get outta here! From just reading the detailed list above, you’d think we really pigged out, but portions are relatively small. Just enough to share a few bites with the table, then move on. Not a problem when the chef or GM is coming out to explain everything and chat with you about the food. Is it a quick in and out meal? Absolutely not! Plan on spending at least 1.5 hours for appetizers, wine and your meal. Add an extra 30 minutes if dessert is on your mind. Meals like this should take some time, as you need it to examine all of the elements on your plate and let the flavors unfold in your mouth. And to digest, of course :) This is the type of restaurant you could take a foodie(dare I say food snob?) friend and blow their mind a little. Seriously, s/he won’t see what’s coming! Or just make a reservation for a special night on the town if you’re feeling slightly food adventurous. Either way, it’s going to be a great experience.

A great place for any occasion, lunch or dinner. The former Chef de Cuisine from Baumé, Ryan Shelton has really outdone himself moving away from fine dining yet still maintaining all of the refinement in a perfect marriage of unique flavors and presentations. It’s nice to see that he’s finally found a home where he can really explore his own tastes and styles. The pastry chef, Yoomi Shelton, has equally brought her expansive skill set to this restaurant enticing diners with elegantly presented dishes exemplifying restraint and balance when it comes to a field where sugar bombs tend to be the norm. I really enjoyed my meal of steak frites with their own unique take on fries as well as the avocado cornmeal poppers. The strawberry shortcake(If I remember correctly) desert was also to die for. Highly recommended as they will only continue to improve.

I had high hopes for this place and was a little disappointed. I was never a fan of Miyake, the previous restaurant/club in this space, and I was excited to have a reasonably priced steakhouse in Palo Alto(Fleming’s is wonderful but considerably more expensive). Plus the menu here is more creative than the typical steakhouse, with creative small plates and a good selection of non-steak entrees. So I was really looking forward to it, but based on our meal here I can’t give more than 3 stars. The meal started out well, with a creative bread basket, including a pretzel bread, and an order of avocado corn dogs($ 7). I love corn dogs but haven’t had one in years(the whole not eating pork thing throws a wrench in things). I was just expecting some sort of breaded avocado, but this was a true corn dog with an avocado center in place of the hot dog. It was delicious and tasted every bit as good as the ones I had growing up at the Iowa State Fair. My husband had the hanger steak with fries($ 27), medium well. We both thought his steak came out more like well done(it was blackened and charred on the outside) but other than that he liked it. My entrée of halibut(also $ 27) was very disappointing. It was covered in foam, which I don’t really like, and the fish was tough and dry. The accompaniments, including a pea sauce and candied pecans, were nice but they didn’t get the basics right. It was like they were trying too hard to do some fancy, fine dining dish and it flopped. We will give them another try, but I’ll try something that’s not seafood next time.

I had a very enjoyable meal here. The service was wonderful and on point. There are separate rooms to keep the noise and distractions to a minimum. There is a bar and TVs for happy hour types that want to relax and watch ‘the game’. Nearly every dish we tried was unique and still wonderful/delicious –Bread & Pretzels: I loved the pretzels and the mustard cheese dip. Great alternative to normal bread & butter, although I have been on a mustard binge lately. The other non-standard white bread(which they had but I didn’t try), was great without any extra butter. It was very moist and flavorful, like the bread or olive oil or something was already in it. –Soy Glazed Pork Belly: Delicious Pork Belly. If you like pork belly… –Octopus: I really wanted to try some octopus. Turns out, I’m not a big fan. This was a really large tentacle though, I was expecting something smaller.’ –Turf & Turf: The ribeye was pretty thin, which is unusual, but the combination of sauce, ribeye, & pastrami went really well together and was a unique take on steak that was super delicious. A very nice change of pace from a normal ribeye. –Pan Seared Southern Gentleman: A Filet Mignon with bacon and a bourbon glaze. This steak was so tender and nicely flavored with the bourbon glaze. Once again, a lovely departure from a normal filet. –Whole Grilled Branzino: Lots of meat, cooked & seasoned well. They can de-bone it for you if you are lazy. My mother absolutely loved it, although this dish is usually great wherever I’ve had it. –Fried Brussels Sprouts: I’m not entirely sure what all was in this(I know it had some nuts, brown sugar and other spices), but whatever it was made it a flavor explosion. Very unique take on Brussels sprouts that I was not expecting, and it was very addictive. –Creamed Kale: A nice twist on Kale or creamed spinach. Was delicious, but unlike some of the other dishes, not a unique taste to me. Was very similar to a creamed spinach. –Grilled Artichoke: Perhaps the most disappointing dish. Was just a plain artichoke. If you like artichoke it is nice, but when the other dishes were so wonderful and interesting, this was pretty boring in comparison –Blackberry Tart: Was really just some blackberries & mascarpone on a cookie with some honey drizzled on(Then meringue and crème separate). I really don’t like tarts normally, so I didn’t enjoy this(my mother ordered it, I would never have tried it otherwise) –Caramel Apple Special: This was some caramelized apples, sea salt caramel ice cream & some sweet toast thingies. ‘Twas only a special for the night, so it isn’t a regular menu item, but this thing was quite delicious. A nice meal finisher.(But once again, not a standout item like some of their other dishes). ________ Conclusion: Great atmosphere & service. All the foods are high quality and good eatin’. The entrees and Brussels sprouts are spectacular; unique and flavorful. Definitely a great addition to University Ave.

It took long enough for that wretched Miyake to die. I miss the old Miyake that used to be down the street. This one one not so much. Im glad to see Palo Alto Grill go in. First of all you see the folks from Lavanda took it over. Cevapi can still be found. Second, the exec and pastry chefs come from Baume, so you see some of the cooking technique used from the time they spent in that kitchen. Third, steaks just dont go out of style. It’s a comfort food, yet can be high end as you like. It’d been a while since I stepped into the space and it’s been transformed with dark woods and dim lighting. Gone is the disco ball/smoke machine shite that used to be here. I realized I had seen our server from Portola Kitchen so even more familiarity was mixing in. Got the rib eye with pastram on top(Tur&Turf!), Japanese grilled octopus, Robuchon style pommes purée, creamed kale, and Dungeness Ciopino. Everything was really tasty. Our server was super awesome, as she was in her former gig, and took great care of us. I think once the word gets out, this place will start packing in. Comfort food steakhouse with modernist chefs = good for Palo Alto. 4.25 stars.
