True authentic Pakistani food. The chicken tikka boti during their lunch buffet are amazing. Their lunch buffet also has briyani, plauo, paye, naan, etc. Their chicken tikka masala is also a delicious Pakistani version of the popular Indian dish which was actually invented in Glasgow, Scotland. If you are Pakistani, a kid of Pakistanis, or just want to know what real Pakistani food tastes like, go there, now(or when they are open).

This place is easy to miss. It’s literally a hole in the wall place. However, they serve bold authentic food. My husband and I love the biryani and Lahori charga. But each and every item I have tried here was simply finger licking good. I did try the buffet once and wasn’t very impressed, since they didn’t have their famous biryani on the menu. The owner is super nice and makes you feel at home all the time. There is one staff member however who is rude and obnoxious, and seems like he would rather be doing something else than this. If he is taken out of the picture, the place is a must try!

The most amazing Indian and Pakistani delicacies you can imagine. My personal favorites are the Pakistani biryani and goat curry they make. The chicken dishes, naan, chargha chicken all have a very different favour that grows on your taste buds as you start your meal. The spice level is an amazing optimum — most Indian restaurants tend to get carried away and make the food so spicy and hot that you end up drinking too much water to help the burning lips — but not here! So if it is one if those days when you feel like exploring a new taste — I would strongly suggest this is the place !! Also the prices are extremely decent ! And you may just end up licking your fingers ;)

When I want quick Indian food to-go, I think of St. Louis Halal Meat. I was craving some Indian, but didn’t want to dine-in at the 12th floor of a hotel or pay an arm and a leg. Google, a friend to us all, informed me that only a couple of miles away I could find St. Louis Halal Meat on Page Ave. A halal butcher shop that also has a limited menu. I actually passed it the first time I went — it is tucked back off the street in a nondescript strip mall near a license bureau. I ordered and the friendly man on the phone described the few select offerings. After that first order, I was hooked! Fresh, fresh, fresh, and absolutely delicious! The portions are heaping, and the spices are exquisite. Chicken biryani — Perfectly tender seasoned basmati rice with marinated spicy chicken. Delectable Indian flavorings, and comes with a delicious yogurt sauce to quell the heat. My #1 favorite from here. Chicken curry — Delicious traditional curry flavored sauce with chicken and rice. Not too spicy, and no veggies like carrots or potatoes. Very good. Naan — Once when I called in I asked if they had garlic naan, and the guy said it wasn’t on the menu but that he could make it, no problem. What I got was their usual flaky, chewy flat bread — tasty as always — with the heavenly scent and just the right flavor of garlic. Not overpowering nor barely noticeable. Ask nicely and you should be able to try. :)

So the place is kinda creepy and hidden in a beat down strip mall. I crossed the place like 3 times before i called the restaurant and got directions from them. Once inside, it looked more like a grocery store than a restaurant. Anyways, owe ordered chicken biryani, goat biryani and Aloo bhaji with poori. And here is why i rated the place so highly: The food was AWESOME! after a long time i had authentic indian food with the right combination of spices. Also, the quality of rice and chicken was excellent. If you are with family, i would recommend takeout more than dine-in. I would highly recommend this place to anybody looking for delicious and authentic food, and willing to make huge compromise on ambience.

I went back after a break for over a year. I definitely liked the food well enough the last few times I went, but sort of forgot about it. Then I remembered, and read up on recent reviews. Seemed to me that it must have improved even from when I used to go. So I decided to stop in recently(still has that hole-in-the-wall feel I remembered), and the owners seem to be different. Even more friendly… And they had beef nihari on the specials board, so I was all IN for that(I’m a fiend for nihari). Once I got the dish, it was just sublime, with fresh ginger and cilantro punctuating the deep savory flavor of the sauce. They warned me it would be hot, and it was indeed quite warm. Not intolerably so, but just right to the point I got a mild sweat going on my brow. Perfect. The dish was so delicious I keep thinking about it, and wondering how I can figure out whenever they will offer it. If the rest of the menu is as good, it’s most certainly a hidden gem. Very highly recommended(not 5 stars because for me it takes the highest of perfection to earn that distinction).

I found this place when looking for Indian places on Unilocal.I am trying to find a place to compete with my favorite place in Saint Louis, Indian Palace, and had high hopes for this place. I was able to talk my friend Elle into coming with me which wasn’t so hard because who doesn’t like Indian(ok I guess quite a few people but meh that doesn’t matter) I drove past the place the first time because it is located in a strip mall. Upon entering I had a feeling it was going to be awesome. I absolutely LOVE hole in the wall places, and this place falls into that category. This place is a butcher shop and grocery which just so happens to cook food for you as well. I ordered the food at the counter and we sat down. The tables had birthday table cloths on it which was awesome and cheesy at the same time! When the food came it was GREAT! The meat tasted incredibly fresh(butcher shop duh) and the rice and naan was very good. The only downfall was the fact that there were a ton of little bones in the chicken. But that was just a mild annoyance. While we have plenty of great Indian places in the STL area I think this is one of my favorites. I really cannot wait to get some food to go as well. So while it is not as good as the Goat Pickle from Indian Palace this place easily gets a solid 4⁄5 stars!

This is a little hidden treasure, literally. You have to pay attention or you might drive right by it(it’s in a strip mall behind a closed gas station). My fiancé found this online and we stopped by for lunch a week ago(we don’t live in StL area and try to find good Indian food every time we visit) and we were thrilled with the food! We had goat keema, goat biryani, naan, and double ka meetha for dessert. My fiancé is from Hyderabad, and said that while nothing can compare to he biru back home, this place comes pretty darn close. The naan is perfection! Soft and buttery and melts in your mouth. After we ate we chatted with the owner’s son for a bit and mentioned that we would be coming by in a couple days to get more food to take back home(that’s how good it is). I mentioned that we were going to try the goat korma, and that I prefer my food on the spicy side. We placed our order by phone, and when we arrived he came out and said he remembered us and he made the korma spicy! We spoke with the owner as well when we were there today. He talked with us about how they worked really hard adjusting the recipes until they made something that was just right. Well they surpassed that. I highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for authentic flavor and a friendly atmosphere. We will be making the 2 hour drive often to eat… and ordering more to take home too. LOVETHISPLACE!

So this place is like the ultra of ultra of creepy. It’s super hidden in this run-down strip mall that you might drive past if you didn’t know it was there and the parking lot looks super sketch. I was a little nervous to even walk in! Once inside it was a very bare, small, kinda dirtyish store with nobody in sight — kinda felt weird. They came out right away though and we ordered our food. The menu is very small — like maybe 10 items? I’m not sure, anyways, I got the chicken curry and naan(I LOVENAAN!) The curry was very good and somewhat spicey. I liked it a lot. The chicken was very tasty and cooked well HOWEVER and this is a huge HOWEVER since it is a butcher shop and they cut up all their meat on the spot, there is likely to be random bones in the meat where you least expect it. This makes it slightly difficult to eat(esp if you have braces and can’t bite into things well or bite things off a bone well). I had to use two forks and a plate to shred the meat to make sure there wasn’t a hidden bone. That said, the dish was great. The naan was huge, fluffy, and very good. Glad they added it to the menu. I did eat some of my friends rice with the curry and it was pretty legit as well. Side note: the random tables that were in there to eat at had table clothes with cupcakes and sprinkles on them… kinda random! HAHA. Also, the whole butcher shop inside the store is kinda off putting cuz when you’re eating all of a sudden you hear a whack whack whack and it’s kinda funky monkey. but whatevs. if you don’t mind going to a sketch place with a butcher shop inside to order legit ethnic food then def stop on by!

My parents are Pakistani, and being away from home(nyc) means not having access to home cooked Pakistani meals(I don’t have time to cook, lol). But have no fear, St. Louis Halal Meat to the rescue! This is one of the very, very few Pakistani restaurants in St. Louis. It’s not really a restaurant; it’s a butcher shop/grocery store with some seating for those who wish to eat in(most people just do carry out). I’ve tried the chicken biryani, chicken kababs, chicken curry, and naan. Everything was excellent(the kababs might’ve been a bit too salty for me, though). It really is authentic Pakistani food. They didn’t have double ka meetha when I went recently! The owner said they didn’t make any sweets this week =(Double ka meeta(bread pudding) is actually a very delicious, traditional Hyderabadi dessert. My grandparents from both sides are Hyderabadi, and so my family makes this dish during the holidays; it’s been a while since I’ve had some. Anyway, hopefully I can get some next time.

Saint Louis Halal Meat, Grocery & Baba’s Restaurant is a great little hidden gem located in a strip mall on Page. You will pass it up if you’re not looking for the address. I passed it twice, but finally found it located next to a closed down petro-station(I think it was a Phillips 66). They offer a small selection of Indian & Pakistani grocery items, but the main reason to come here is for the prepared food.(See photos and drool) So anyway, a friend of mine has been on this quest to find the best biryani in St. Louis since he’s been missing the good stuff back at home. Biryani is a rice dish, kind of like a pilaf, with spices and can have veggies and/or meat in it. I’m told that there are different kinds of biryani from all over the world, but here at this place the friendly owner was kind enough to explain that they serve Hyderabadi style biryani. I can’t tell you the difference between the various types, but I can tell you that it was damn good here at Baba’s or whatever you call this place. We tried two different kinds, the goat biryani for $ 8.99 and the chicken biryani for $ 7.99. The goat meat was extra tender and delicious with the chicken being equally good. You can also buy this stuff by the tray for take away. A large tray will cost you anywhere from $ 65 to $ 120 depending on what kind you get. The trays are huge and feed something like 15 people. I’m planning to order a tray and have a feast at my place one of these days. If you come, don’t miss out on the dessert!!! In the refrigerated section, you will find this stuff called Double Ka Meetha(see photo and drool again). It’s like a soggy bread pudding with nuts in it, and it’s so good! It’s packaged up for take away or you can eat it there. I’d suggest eating some there and buying more to take away… yes, it’s that good! The grocery store itself has a small selection compared to other Indian-Pakistani stores in the St. Louis area, but they butcher their own meat, and the goat meat is fresh rather than frozen. There’s an area of about 3 or 4 tables for eating in, or you can just get it to go. I’d give the grocery section 1 or 2 stars, but the food itself is 5 stars in my book. It’s a must try if you love Indian and Pakistani food!
