Good dark parks are very hard to find. I really enjoyed this one! At times it can get very windy but there is lot of room to walk around with the dogs and so far I have not encountered a busy day :)

I only started going recently, its a nice windy location atop a ridge surrounding Howard School. Good — Its nice and cool there due to the location at all times. My dogs can keep running for a good while with the breeze. –Nice wide open area and there seems to be a fair amount of people but not too much to feel like you need to hide in the corner of the area. –Poop bag deposit — OFFLEASH! — Feels almost like another place entirely. Some people mentioned it like a mini get a way and I honestly have to agree with them. Bad –While this place is very dog friendly(Off Leash) it is NOT a dog park so you get a wider array of owners and dogs. Last time I went some lady with no control over her dog had to fight her dog away from mine after it started getting aggressive when my dog showed it no attention. So the lesson is keep an eye out for dogs off the leash as owners tend to just release them right as they enter the area. — A little bit of a slope to deal with if you are worried about a ball getting loose and rolling down a hill try going in a bit further closer to Howard School. You get a bit of a flatter spread. Overall I truly enjoy this place. I dont often make the venture to out of the way locations but this one is worth it if you need a little get away with your dog.

This is such a relaxing hidden gem. I come here on the weekend’s when I want to just get away. The hiking is amazing and it’s never too crowded. The sunsets can be amazing. It’s family friendly a plus for those with kiddies. Also is a good place to take the dogs! This is an East bay must if you live in the area.

I have lived 5 minutes from this wonderful park for 16 years. When i moved here in 96 i didn’t even know it was there – What a nice suprise! I have 3 rescue dogs who I love to take up there every chance I get. I hope it remains there and is not developed. As a concerned citizen of Oakland and a Realtor of 10 years here in the Bay, I know how precious it is to have an open and special place like this. Enjoy!!!

This is absolutely my favorite place to exercise, both for myself and my dog. Million dollar views, lots of parking, multiple park entrances, and thus far I’ve only met well mannered dogs there. It is polite to keep dogs on leash when a non-dog person approaches or if there’s dogs you don’t know. Let’s keep this park a safe one both for runner and Rover!

King Estates Open Space is an East Oakland neighborhood jewel. Off 580 at the Keller Ave. exit, and northwest of Knowland Park, King Estates is a beautiful place to walk the dog, share a picnic, or watch the sun set over the Bay. For dog-freaks like me,(who feel a walk in the sunshine isn’t complete without a quadruped,) you should know that dogs are *supposed* to be on leash here. Most dog-owners I’ve seen have had their dogs off leash, and happily they seem to be sensitive to the fact that not all park-users will be thrilled by a slobbery, full-frontal greeting from Fido.(I think if we’re not going to follow the rule, we should be extra-respectful of non-dog-lovers.) I heard from someone who lives next to King Estates that condos were supposed to be built there; evidently it was saved from a big-shovel-followed by-yuppies invasion by research showing it’s «shifting» land. Here’s to the Hayward Fault for preserving this Oakland sweet spot. Cheers.
