I went for a bone density scan this week at F.O.R.E(Foundation for Osteoporosis research and Education) in Oakland. If my experience is any indication, be prepared to skip over the nutritional comments from the technician minding the scan. He told me that in case I had osteoporosis all I needed to do was drink more milk, eat yoghurt and take extra calcium. I’m allergic to dairy & calcium supplementation is linked to more problems than what it’s supposed to help. Please do your research about osteoporosis. For me, the answer lies in the process of remineralizing the bones(including the teeth) by food choices, exercise, etc. Doctor-prescribed drugs for osteoporosis are linked to making the bones more brittle. Perhaps you’ll be interested in beginning your re-mineralization research with this site
Go to F.O.R.E. for the scan only. The technician seems to be well-trained with the DEXA machine.

Mad props for this place. The provide FREE and low-cost bone density scans to people who are uninsured, underinsured, or just can’t afford the care. Any low-income patient can schedule a DEXA(Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scan for $ 150 — less than half of the normal cost. Those who can’t afford that fee can sign up for a waiting list and get a FREE scan when the center is doing teaching sessions with doctors and radiology technicians. FORE sponsored the first osteoporosis screenings at places like Rite Aid and Walgreens in the early 1990s, and when mine came up suspicious, they invited me to have a free complete bone density scan at their Oakland office. They helped me catch and treat my problem early. I am so grateful for the many medical professionals here in the East Bay who voluntarily treat patients the health care system has disenfranchised. Thank you, FORE!
