It’s sad to hear that The Marrow has closed, as I only found this place a few months ago by accident. We stopped by for brunch one day and found the restaurant to be very cozy. There was plenty of sunlight, and the dining room was mostly empty. We were quickly seated by a polite hostess. We started off with a pastries plate, though most of it was too sweet for me. There was a berry crumb cake that was delicious though, and I wish the whole plate had been just that. I decided to go with the spicy lamb meatballs, something completely out of the norm for me. The meatballs were little bites of amaze-balls, not to heavy, with polenta and some pecorino cheese. Though my dish was a hit, it was disappointing that the reaction to the food was not consistent at my table. I would have probably only have gone back for the meatballs.

Harold Dieterle has made notable strides in the last decade, after winning the first season of Top Chef. In that time, he’s opened up three restaurants, carving for himself a small niche in the ever-changing, ever-brutal dining environment of NYC. There’s Perilla, an ingredient-driven American restaurant, as well as Kin Shop, his foray into the flavors of Thailand. And then, there was The Marrow, Dieterle’s homage to his German and Italian roots; the past tense must be used in this line, however, with the recent annoucement of The Marrow’s upcoming closure. My friends and I visited several months earlier for a weekend afternoon brunch. At the time, we were a little surprised to find how empty the dining room was, especially given the prime, West Village location and the spaciousness of the venue. It’s a charming spot on sunny days, given the plethora of windows, the intricate design of the wallpaper, and the number of curved leather banquettes. We were quickly greeted and seated after confirming our reservation, and started on the task of choosing our dishes. Although the dinner menu splits out dishes based on either a German or Italian slant, the influences of Dieterle’s background is evident even on an aggregated menu, from a Corned Beef Hash, to Bucatini, and even a Grilled Ham Steak. It’s not surprising to waver a little between dishes, but the overall compactness of the menu makes this task a little easier. We started off with a plate of three Breakfast Pastries. The Pecan Cinnamon Bun was a sticky, nutty, and chewy concoction, perhaps a little too sweet for my tastes, but a solid starting bite. The Milk Chocolate Scone followed, a dry, crumbly pastry that was sparsely dotted with chocolate chips, which would have been better served warm. The group favorite was probably the Summer Berry Crumb Cake, a moist slice of cake filled with various berries and topped with a generous cinnamon sugar. I’d settled on the Corned Beef Hash, which was served with two fried eggs and a side of grilled bread. In retrospect, it was a rather simple dish; the corned beef was very monotonous in flavor and sinewy texture and the accompanying smoked tomato vinaigrette wasn’t present in generous enough amounts to support the rest of the plate. The bite(or two) of my friend’s Spicy Lamb Meatballs were much better, however; they had just a hint of gaminess to them and the polenta and sprinkled pecorino highlighted the best of the protein. It’s been a little disconcerting to note the number of restaurants that have closed before I’ve been able to review them. The Marrow had its strong points, but given the increasing cost of operating a business(especially in West Village), perhaps the latest news is not that much of a surprise. Dieterle notes that some dishes might be transitioned to his other restaurants, but for now, it looks like The Marrow has served its last dinner service.

This is an all star restaurant. The food, service, atmosphere, and price are everything I look for when dining out. Let’s start with the bone marrow. I had initially read about the bone marrow with sea urchin but unfortunately that wasn’t on the menu tonight. However, they had marrow with capers, onions, & parsley. The marrow was roasted well and paired nicely with the garnishes. Next came the cavatelli with a lemony sauce that melted in your mouth. We also had a side of brussel sprouts with fennel, veal, and cream sauce. The sprouts were light and perfectly seasoned and a great compliment to the heavier pasta. Both were absolutely delicious. To top the dinner portion of this epic meal… The BURGER. The burger is cooked to order(we had it rare) and is served with onions, Gruyère, & more MARROW, on a pretzel bun. It was decadent. Cooked to perfection, it basically melts in your mouth. Get this burger. Finally, dessert. We had the ginger stout cake. Again. Perfection. The sharp ginger flavor was well balanced with the stout component and came with ice cream and pears. It was a perfect end to the meal. Obviously the food was awesome, but it’s important to note the service was exceptional. Our waiter Theodore was ever present, filling water, and cleaning plates out of way throughout the entire meal. But the best part. He wasn’t intrusive. He did not interrupt our meal in any way and provided good feedback when asked about menu items. This restaurant is exceptional and I recommend it to anyone.

Came here because I really wanted to try the Uni Bone Marrow, but when it came to the table it had Roe on it! I was SUPER disappointed since the waiter did not even tell us they ran out of uni. Other then that the food was pretty good. I had the bone marrow burger with the pretzel bun, the burger was tasty, juicy and heavy. I was able to eat half only. My friend ordered the duck schnitzel and the quail and both were tasty as well. Overall, it was good. service was ok and dessert we had the panna cotta which wasn’t anything special.

I was a little worried about the mixed reviews but still wanted to try The Marrow for the sea urchin bone marrow. I was very happy with my first visit around Thanksgiving and have been back again during the summer. The German influences on the menu is a nice change. I love the pretzel rolls and would buy them to take home! On my first visit, we had the bone marrow topped with sea urchin. Bone marrow is just delicious and the sea urchin added extra richness to elevate the dish. I also had the schnitzel which had a crispy, thin breading and was a great dish. We finished with the ginger stout cake which was perfect for the cold winter weather. At my last visit this summer, the sea urchin was replaced with salmon roe on the summer menu. The sea urchin is much better with the marrow. While I like salmon roe, it didn’t do much for the marrow and I could have done without the roe. I am just guessing that availability and cost of sea urchin may have played a part in the change? If it’s just a seasonal change, I do hope the sea urchin returns. The schnitzel did not appear on the summer menu and I went with the hanger steak. I also love the angled corner door on the quaint West Village street.

I came here for Restaurant Week and regretted it. I should have ordered off the regular menu. Happy hour $ 5 drinks for the win. Mussels — average Porgy(fish) — average Panna Cotta — yum. and sadly, better than the rest of the meal.

Loved the marrow, but I think that was it. The drinks are mehhhh, and the burger was nothing special. The actual space is cute and the servers are friendly though.

I went to The Marrow for dinner last night with three other people. I had limited expectations because of the mixed reviews on Unilocal, but I have to say, I thought the food and service were both exceptional. We started with the bone marrow with salmon roe. My fiancé and brother were not big fans of the roe and didn’t think it benefitted the marrow, but my sister-in-law and I both liked the added briny flavor. For entrees we got the pan roasted skate(x 2), wagyu steak, and duck schnitzel — all perfectly cooked and perfectly seasoned. We also had the corn ragu and fried kale sprouts — mind blowing. Our server recommended the ginger stout cake for dessert, which we pretty much housed in about 8 seconds even though we were all full(and two of us claim to not like sweets). The server was perfect — attentive and knowledgeable but not at all overbearing. All in all a very great dining experience.

Super disappointed with our meal here and it was super expensive, not my forte. A few highlights before I jump into the negatives. 1. Those ricotta meatballs were just fabulous. However at $ 22, you’re a bit overpriced. Served on a nice light salad, this dish was perfect for a lighter summer dinner. 2. The complimentary pretzel roll was a nice touch and delicious served with mustard and olive oil. 3. The desserts were the only items we felt actually were fairly portioned for price. 4. The vegetable sides were all delicious with special highlight of the kale crisps. What wasn’t so awesome: 1. The pretty mediocre calamari app. There was supposed to be some spice involved, fra diavolo style and that just wasn’t the case. 2. The tasteless hamachi crudo 3. The flavorless burrata plate. I get that burrata is wet, this was watery and bland. 4. The underwhelming zeppoles with chocolate. Really? How can you fuck this up? 5. The drink list was pretty lifeless. Not a wonderful beer or speciality cocktail list. Décor is hip to the West Village and service was a bit awkward. My party got shushed by another party since we were getting a bit rambunctious with story telling, so there was that. Overall, this German-Italian hybrid restaurant from Top Chef winner was more hype than anything. It was extremely expensive for what we actually received and I definitely don’t recommend.

What’s not to like? Burger with bone marrow, cheese and served on a pretzel bun… great combination… only slight drawback was to need to add just a touch of salt to really bring out all of the flavor.

HOUSEMADECORNEDBEEFHASH: Fried eggs, grilled bread & smoked tomato vinaigrette fun deco. nice open space. my hash came with maybe 5 pieces of tiny, tiny, bite size corned beef that is suppose to be a signature dish. i couldn’t understand why it ended up being mostly a plate of potatoes and asked ‘where’s the beef?’ even the waiter agreed and provided more corned beef. by the time it arrived i was almost done, oh well. — SECONDVISIT during restaurant week was a much better experience. Service was attentive and helpful with the wine selection. Around 8:30 the seats were filling up. Mussels: could have used some salt Porgy: could have used less salt Panna Cotta: just perfect Happy hour wine is a great deal. Was able to take advantage of it along with restaurant week menu.

Due to the uni shortage in NYC, flakes of uni were replaced by salmon roe(boooh). Yet I have to say«The Marrow» has the best bone marrow I ever had in NYC, it is big enough to fed two, and rich in flavors, so much better than Crispo. Grilled Wagyu steak was cooked perfectly! We ordered two sides: fried rice ball and Crispy Kale Sprouts. The rice ball is good, not impressed. Kale Sprouts is soooooo good, a must try! I was never a big fan of kale, but could not stop eating. Ginger Stout Cake is overrated and way too sweet. I would skip dessert and stick to German beer instead or German red(surprisingly smooth and good). Our server is attentive and sweet, we enjoy our night! I would definite be back to try out the brunch menu: baked eggs, smoked trout and squid ink pasta.

2.5 stars. I had their bone marrow with sea urchin: delicious combination of flavors. Now let’s talk about their famous TM burger. I loved the idea of matching bone marrow with a beef patty, but this burger didn’t live to the expectations. Ordered medium-rare, it came half medium-rare and half done; all the ingredients — from the cheese to the bun — were great, buy it was the beef itself that missed character: its taste was actually pretty boring, and I had trouble finishing it. Disappointed.

This winter’s Restaurant Week seems to have passed without much fanfare. I did, however, get to try Harold Dieterle’s The Marrow. Of Dieterle’s restaurants I’ve only been to Kin Shop. The 2 restaurants are very different and I must say I think I prefer Kin Shop for its more creative and interesting dishes. That said, dinner here was lovely and one of the better RW dinners I’ve had. We ordered the carpaccio and the sun choke soup for appetizers and ordered the bone marrow off the regular menu. And yes, the bone marrow is truly amazing! I’ve had his bone marrow dish at Kin Shop as well but here the combination of uni and marrow is delightful! For entrees we shared the skate and the pork chop. The portions were substantial in comparison to the usual RW offerings. I preferred the skate over the two dishes. For desserts we had the chocolate pudding and an apple cake of some kind(can’t remember too well). The chocolate dessert was fantastic! The service was lovely and I also liked the atmosphere. There are several banquettes for larger groups but if you’re here with a date then it can also be intimate. I was underwhelmed by the bar program but the wine selection is more than adequate. All in all it was a great dinner but the food doesn’t quite stand out on its own so I don’t quite see myself frequenting this place.

Just because someone won Top Chef, doesn’t mean anything they put out will be great. Came here on a Friday night for dinner. We had reservations and were seated quickly. Great location and atmosphere. Items we tried, the bone marrow of course, and the slow cooked duck egg for starters. The marrow was very good, wish I could say the same for the duck egg. For the main course, I had the pan-fried duck schnitzel and my friends ordered the grilled waygu culotte steak and the suckling pig saltimbocca. I was really hoping that the schnitzel would queue fond memories of my adventures in Germany and Austria, but instead what I got was disappointment due to it being very dry and rather bland. Only people who don’t know what schnitzel is supposed to taste like would praise it. The wolfberries were nice, but not exactly a great pairing. The waygu steak and pig saltimbocca were both on the bland side as well. We also tried the fried rice ball and crispy brussels sprouts. The rice ball was nothing special while the brussels sprouts were quite good. The best part of the food was the presentation If looking for a great meal, there are so many other choices in the area more worth your time and money.

The marrow burger tasted fatty and oily, and it was scrumptious. You can’t really see the marrow, but you can definitely taste it. The waitress told us that when the burger is cooked, the marrow melts into the meat, making it moist and wonderful. My friend got the sausages, which I thought were OK. We very much enjoyed our drinks and also the service was great.

Brunch at The Marrow is an afterthought – so much an afterthought, mind you, that they neglected to turn on the heat in time for their morning opening. The brunch menu seems much more focused on «lunch-type» items(such as their signature marrow burger, which was, at best, lukewarmly received by my fellow diners), and I settled for pancakes topped with nuts and Vermont maple syrup. Lacking in both style and subtlety, the pancakes are more accurately described as being soaked in syrup(think of a McDonald’s McGriddle sandwich but much worse), removing any hope of enjoying the pancake. On the plus side, the restaurant is a fairly nice space and the large windows offer plenty of natural light to get your day going. Aside from the temperature faux pas, service was passable. Overall, however, The Marrow just cannot be recommended for brunch.

Let me get straight to the point. Bone Marrow with Sea Urchin was ridiculously great. I can eat this with every meal. The brininess of the sea urchin complemented the bone marrow really well… it was butter! After this appetizer, I couldn’t care less about the main dish. This restaurant won my heart. For my entrée I got Duck Confit. Nothing special here. It was served with quark and some vegetables. It was good but my mind was stuck on the love of my life Bone Marrow appetizer lol. Friendly service. Go get your marrow at The Marrow!

I’m not even one of «those» that whines about how good bone marrow is and all, but I came here and of course had to try the namesake dish, and I loved it just like I did everything else about my entire experience here. After seeing all sorts of hype and reading countless glowing reviews(I still don’t get why the Unilocal reviews are so low though), I was not surprised when I was not able to get a reservation at first. When trying to book on OpenTable, I had to settle for a reservation about 3 weeks away, and all I could even get at that time was a single slot for dinner at 6:30. Luckily, it was well worth the wait. This place is pretty classy, so you will pay a decent amount for everything you eat, but it’s worth it. After the lengthy anticipation, I made sure to really feast here since there are so many great things to choose from on the menu. Here’s what we got: House-made pretzel rolls: This is the complimentary bread they start you off with, so we were off to an amazing start when they brought us each an individual, piping hot and delicious pretzel roll. These were so good I didn’t turn down the offer for another when the waiter came by and saw that I finished mine in 10 seconds. Hand-Cut Fettuccini($ 12) This was an incredible starter. This was actually an excellent portion considering the typical portion sizes at places like these and also that it was a starter. This was some seriously delicious pasta and I would definitely recommend getting this over the bone marrow, though I understand you will probably feel compelled to try it, like I was. The Bone Marrow($ 16) The cool thing about the dish here is that it’s topped with some creamy delicious uni. This is definitely a unique spin that works very well and left me wanting to try bone marrow several more times. Braised Beef Short Rib($ 27) Short rib is probably the greatest food ever. Hence, this dish was predictably amazing. Pan-Fried Duck Schnitzel($ 31) This crispy, thinly pounded duck was a great complement to the buttery soft and juicy short rib. I haven’t had much schnitzel, but I am fairly certain this was done right and absolutely sure it was delicious and definitely worth ordering. Dry-Aged Beef Fat Fried Potatoes($ 10) We had to get a side of course, so we went with these, which were just as good as they sound. These were boiling hot and very very crispy. Excellent. My logic always fails me at this point when I’ve just had an amazing meal consisting of way too much food. I figure I MUST order dessert since the meal was so good, completely disregarding the fact that I am dangerously full. Apple Hand Pie($ 10) This was pretty tasty, and worth it just for the fact that it was a hot piece of pie with some deliciously refreshing ice cream to go with it. Ginger Stout Cake($ 10) This was the dessert I was reading about in all of the reviews, and it was worth all of the praise. Also paired with a delicious scoop of ice cream, this was a really delicious piece of cake. As you can see, I tried hard to eat through the entire menu, but there are still several items that I would love to try. I would definitely be willing to make a reservation far in advance to score a seat here again for another memorable meal.

The best service, period. Often times, when I write a review… it’s focused on the food. Obviously. But, I wanted to spend some time commenting on how professional and thoughtful the service was«The Marrow.» We were literally there for 3 hours. And the entire time, they never rushed us out, refilled our coffee, refilled our water, asked politely if we were finished with our dishes. TOPNOTCH! *stand up and clapping* Now, to the yummy part. The food: twas good, friends. We shared the baked eggs, the bone marrow burger(chucks of delicious, rich bone marrow), a coffee cake, and the french toast. Blazing. I highly recommend this place, it wasn’t too packed or loud, so you could really get into your conversations.
