High end and unique but traditional flavors in a wonderful Omakase style setting.

Definitely one of the best sushi restaurants I’ve been to. The fusion of flavor combination put together by the talented chef whom served us tonight were very pleasing to the palate. The rice to me was the highlight(paired with the fresh melt in your mouth fish that is). The rice congealed together very nicely but was not sticky nor gooey. Would definitely recommend this place.

Lauren C. and many others were spot on in regards to this place being a rip off. What a scam. There is better sushi in my supermarket back home. Nothing special about the sushi and the portions are small compared to my favorite places throughout the U.S. The toro roll overflowed with mayo and the hamachi was on the warm side. I also felt very rushed and please serve cold beer!!! BTW. Speak English people. You are in America!!! Can’t understand how this place gets 4 – 5 stars for those who are true fans of sushi. With a sushi bar on every block in NYC I just can’t believe this is the best NYC has to offer??? $ 100 dollar bill, I left a $ 10 tip that was $ 10 to much. I won’t be back… truly sucked.

I believe Gari 46 has addressed many of the concerns posted in reviews all over the internet. I went, ordered Omakase at a table and was told clearly, exactly what I was going to get and for what price and was told if I ordered more there was an additional charge(of course). What I got was 12 pieces of delight for $ 100. Friend order the Tuna 8 ways which comes with a spicy tuna roll for $ 49, very good and a good deal. Staff was friendly enough and explained all very clearly before we ordered. Half bottle of champagne, green tea and red bean ice cream. Fabulous. I was very happy. Still expensive but worth it. Gari has learned not to leave people guessing about what they are going to get and for how much. Great place, will return. Fabulous seaweed salad. Thumbs up big. Tight and loud tho. Great bathrooms!

This is one of the best sushi Omakase in New York. It’s absolutely delicious and amazing. However, be prepared to pay the price for it. It is VERY expensive but totally worth it.

Very good traditional sushi. We had the special and it was sufficient for one person. On the expensive side and not as good as Sushi Yasuda, but worth trying. Their Yuzu Belgian beer was outstanding.

One of the best sushi places I’ve been to. We can only speak to the Chef’s selection of omakase, but it was by far the most creative set of sushi we have ever seen. Every piece was unique and melted in our mouths. Absolutely adored this place, from service to food, and would send anyone looking for amazing sushi to Sushi of Gari. We also had a side of karaage which was not the greatest chicken we have ever had at a Japanese establishment, so I can’t speak to the cooked food. If you’re looking for sushi/sashimi, this is your place.

I’m a sushi purist so I love my sushi to be 100% about the fish and rice. At Sushi of Gari they glop on flavored mayo and sauces. It’s fine, but it’s nothing special and I didn’t enjoy my sushi anymore than I usually would have. I also walked away feeling like I ate a very heavy and unhealthy meal — quite the opposite of what I expect when eating sushi. Freshness is average — but for the exuberant prices, they should have been top notch. My scallop had a really unfresh, fishy taste.

Wow, what a massive screwing we took here. Visiting my daughter in NYC and taking her to dinner is one of life’s great — and rare — pleasures. We plan for it weeks ahead, and this time we picked Sushi of Gari 46 for our one dinner. We sat at the bar and requested sushi omikase. From the beginning the waitress and sushi chef were very curt, virtually no description of how it worked, what it might be — just sit down and eat. They keep setting food in front of you until you say«quit», usually nigiri. Some a little ordinary, some quite exotic. I was feeling generous — we only get to do this 1 – 2 times a year, so I didn’t ask too much about the price. After 7 – 8 courses of 2-piece nigiri, we realized we weren’t having much fun. The place is frequented by a very well-heeled crowd, even on a Sunday night, so a little quiet, subdued… classy but boring. Then there were the chef and waitress, both almost silent with just a few words to explain a course, and only if asked. No smiles, no rapport, no effort. So, 7 – 8 courses in, I figure it’s time to check on our bill, because this is starting to feel funny. The waitress was gone for at least 10 minutes, during which we had another course, and when she returned we found that our tab was $ 400 — before tax and tip. Was it the drinks? Nope. Two beers and one mixed drink. No wine or sake. Was it the artfully arranged and beautifully cut presentations? Nope, just strips of fish on rice. Certainly the sushi was excellent — the rice perfect, the fish perfect, the cuts small but neat. So what — you can get that at 100 sushi places in the city for less than half this price. I wanted badly to ask for a line-by-line explanation of the bill, but when you only see your daughter a few times a year, you don’t spend it checking the tab. I just smiled and paid, almost $ 500 with tax and tip, for a very unremarkable, almost unpleasant evening. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice? Not in this lifetime.

So there are so many Japanese restraints with phenomenal sushi and sashimi dishes. Sushi of Gari could be one of them — not on top 10 list though. However, comparing to those Omakase recommended tiny Japanese restaurants, this place is easier to either walk in or make reservation. U don’t need to refresh ur computer to get a table one month in advance lol. Fishes are fresh and I actually like their sushi rice more than those in sushi nakaizawa for some reason. Rice is soft and you can swallow in without even chewing. Great spot for bunch of friends eating tgt!

Over priced Japanese style restaurant for tourists. The setting is not very nice and quite noisy with useless«Irashaimase, いらっしゃいませ». Service is so-so, pushing for $ 100~150+ Omakase(???, no price on menu) without any explanation. The sake list is short and grossly over priced. I may have spent way too much time in Japan but I don’t see why I would pay $ 50 for a small Chirashi plate I could get in Tokyo for 2 – 3000 yen max. The bill came with the tip included. Am I an idiot? Am i a tourist?

Food was heavenly… Service was hell… One word to describe this place: Snobby First off, there’s a $ 25 charge if you cancel your reservation. Stank! Secondly, once we got there the hostess asked if we were having omakase or not. I said I don’t know, I haven’t even seen the menu. After a few conversations, we were seated at the bar counter but hostess told the sushi chefs out loud that we might not be getting omakase. Then guess what, no one had omakase at the bar counter. They all had plate sushi. What was all that attitude for? And top it off, one other person came and sat at the bar. Hostess told the chef how this customer hasn’t decided yet if he is having omakase or menu food. Then one sushi chef laughed! OMG! I’ve never seen such attitude from any other restaurant, ever. Anyways, we ordered omakase. Our chef was wonderful and food was just outstanding. But I am not sure I will go back again…

Two years ago, one of my friends who lives in NY recommended Sushi of Gari to me when I visited. I did not get a chance to eat at any of the Gari locations on that visit. Finally, last week I returned to NY again and got to try Gari 46! I would recommend making a reservation as it is a small space and they are packed all evening. Lady and I walked in around 7:30pm and were told it would be an hour wait. We decided to go grab a glass of wine next door while we waited. When our table was ready, the hostess gave us a call and we headed over. We actually ended up sitting at the sushi bar since there was space. The tables are very close to one another, so sushi bar seems more comfortable. Besides, it’s always more fun at the sushi bar. They only let you sit at the sushi bar if you do intend on ordering sushi and not only cooked menu items. As recommended by my friend, Tuna of Gari: tuna 8 ways($ 55) is the thing to order. Two orders — one for lady and one for myself. Large hot house sake to share. We watched the sushi chefs make beautiful plates of jewels(sushi). They have fresh selections of fish and many trained chefs working the sushi bar. Tuna of Gari did not disappoint! Although I cannot recall exactly each type of tuna sushi, all of them were remarkable! The spicy tuna roll was very good but not spectacular like the sushi. The dish is filling for one person. If you love tuna, this signature dish is a must order. It’s a little pricey, but well worth it. Total tab was $ 165. Overall, authentic high-end sushi dining experience. Ambiance is cozy and hip with the clientele ranging from businesspeople to dating couples to girls on a night out. Service was average. Our server was here and there but we did have to wave him down a few times. Sushi chefs don’t really engage in conversations at the sushi bar, so don’t expect to be taking shots with them. Highly recommend if you are looking for a good sushi joint in NYC. There are several locations and their menus vary.

My cousin and i sat down at the bar b/c its more fun, your sushi gets dropped on you right from the chefs. The chef who was making our sushi was very caring. The first few pieces had a little too much wasabi for me, it didnt bother me to death so i didnt say anything, but he got it fixed after the 3rd one. Less wasabi yay. Then i realized that he was actually really paying attention to his guests. And when i was trying to figure out what the name of the fish one of the sushi was, he even went into the kitchen and got me a little memo written in korean to better explain to me. Wow! And our server was always there whenever i needed more water or another round of drink or napkins even before i asked. And they brought me a fried ice cream with this cute candle on it for my birthday. My experience was very satisfying.

Excellent service, authentic food, a bit noisy. So I’ve been here twice now. Both time with reservations via OpenTable. I walked in and was greeted and seated right away, the server came within a minute and asked if it was my first time there, it was not but I asked her to refresh my memory anyway, she proceeded took the beverage request and fulfilled the request quickly. Throughout the entire experience she was very attentive. It’s nice to have good service in Hell’s Kitchen :) The food here is authentic, note there’s a separate menu for rolls etc than the main menu, if you’re looking for rolls you have to ask. For dinner we ordered from both menus. Edamame — not salty, good, I’ve had better Spicy tuna roll — excellent, the tuna is definitely the freshest I’ve had in HK Salmon roll — excellent and just as fresh as the tuna roll Sashimi Dinner — 15 pieces of Sashimi, excellent selection(I can’t remember the types included) and fresh. My friend who does not fancy Sashimi ever had some. Green Tea Mille Crepes — tasty, well layered and melts in your mouth. The food and service here is top notch, the only reason I did not give it 5 stars is the place is a bit loud including the staff. Personally I don’t like a lot of noise when dining but maybe that’s how it’s suppose to be.

Excellent sushi and sashimi, pricey of course. I think Gari is best for fresh delicious sashimi. All the plates are presented simply, elegantly, and beautifully. The food all tasted great, the portions being small and light. I enjoyed the specialty sushi the most with it’s different toppings. The a la carte menu was good but it had the basic sushi rolls seen at Japanese restaurants. The cheese shumai was good for what it is but I don’t recommend it. The kabocha tempura was pretty good but the dipping sauce didn’t have grated radish as is traditional. The hamachi kama was very nicely done, the fish nice and flakey with a salty skin. I really enjoyed the creaminess of the sea urchin. It was a delight. The dessert of mochi ice cream was enjoyable as well. The ambiance is modern, clean, and elegantly warm. The service is excellent, they keep switching and bringing a new small clean plate and wiping the table. But overall, come for the easy dissolve in your mouth sashimi. That’s the best thing at Gari.

Have been wanting to try Sushi of Gari for a while now so was excited that I’ve finally gotten the chance! Here’s what we got: Appetizers: Tsukune — very tasty sauce, would order again. Negimaki — looks like a sushi roll. Perfectly cooked but a little salty for my taste. Shrimp Shumai — Plump and delicious. Definately not your average shumai. Main: Omakase — If you don’t mind the cost, go for it. Will give you the experience that Gari intends his diners to have. Although it is described as Gari’s choosings, the waitress was accommodating and nice enough to write down items we didn’t want to receive. Dessert: Green Tea Crêpe Cake — Classic cake from Lady M. Mochi Ice Cream. Overall great experience. Only reason not 5 stars is because the ambience didn’t quite match the food in my opinion.

5 stars for creativity and quality of fish. If you enjoy sashimi with a twist then youll really enjoy sushi of gari. We had the chef selection omakase which basically is a continuous flow of dressed sashimi made one by one and served one by one right at the sushi bar by the chef. We got to be served by the executive chef and watch him prepare each of the pieces which was entertaining. The highlight of the night was hands down the fatty tuna and the seared tuna. It was a beautiful harmony of flavors and texture. Definitely blew us away. You decide when you are fulfilled and done eating and you have no idea how much itll come out unless you give the waitress a budget before hand or something. Itll definitely add up quickly but i say its worth the experience especially if youre an avid sushi lover like me! Two carafes of soju and 2 chef selections later, our bill was around $ 500. Would i do it again? Probably not for a while since there are plenty more 5* places to indulge in but will i be back? Perhaps one day :)

First off, the food is good, no doubt about that. The service leaves a lot to be desired. I came here with a friend who raves about the sushi here, but she always does delivery, first time she came to restaurant. Food: salmon with tomato sushi, yellowtail with jalapeño sushi, red snapper salad, fatty tuna and scallion roll Great selection of sashimi, sushi rolls, etc… The omakase is great(table next to us ordered), looks like a good selection. Service: Slow, slow slow. Took about 10 minutes to get our food menus and get our drink orders. Took forever to get waitress to come over every time. Menu — if you order from their main menu or the a la carte menu, they are missing a bunch of stuff. I would never have known, but my friend orders from seamless and knows exactly what she always gets. Sure enough, she mentioned to waitress and she knew exactly what sashimi and sushi she was talking about. They basically want you to order the omakase and leave a ton of stuff out Bottom line, although the food is good, the service + missing menu items sour the experience for me. There are plenty of good Japanese places in nyc that cost just as much, I’ll go pay them a visit.
