I ordered delivery from them a few months ago and when i got the sushi, the tuna has a green tint to it and it did not taste fresh at all. I got sick that night.

I absolutely loved this place. I was in NYC with my sister and daughters for a long weekend and we stayed a few blocks from here. Small but worth it!

Writing for two Reviewer 1: A good dining experience. Service staff are friendly. Reviewer 2: No need to read a Unilocal review to say this is a good find in Murray Hill. Happened to pop by and try the place on a whim. This place excels in sushi sashimi old fashioned Japanese. We were seated comfortably by the sushi bar. Very spacious. Got to see the one sushi chef in action. Enjoyed the yellowtail which happened to be the most popular for the night. I later asked him to show me which was the fish and he had one remaining chunk left. If you’re not a big eater, order the dinner bento box $ 20. Chicken kara age, sashimi, yellowtail roll, rice, salad and clean miso soup. I couldn’t finish and was able to share. Leave room for complimentary green tea and dessert. Granted it is only one sushi chef, make time to order apps or have a really long conversation about the Iran nuclear deal. Just kidding about the second one… don’t expect fast sushi. It will come out great with patience.

so awful. awful atmosphere, food was in inedible I ordered the thin fluke with ponzu sauce. It was served in chucks with skin and fat on it. I couldn’t even eat it and resembled nothing like I’m used to for this dish. I gave it back and they still charged me for it. Really awful experience

This is one of my go to spots for Sushi on an average take out night. You can taste the difference between your average Japanese seamless sushi take out versus the quality and freshness that Mishima serves. The spicy scallop rolls are not mashed up to mask the taste of a lower grade fish. Instead the cubed scallops are lightly coated with the spicy sauce which usually come in 6 small pieces and not 8. Having said that, the scallop sashimi is pretty excellent as well. The downside is they do not offer brown rice instead of white. If you are the type to compare quality versus quantity, it’s a good bang for the buck. Delivery is also pretty timely to the midtown East area.

Salmon neck and box are great. For the dinner, sushi and sashimi for two provide various types for you to enjoy. Quality is very good and consistent

Years ago, I used to frequent this place. It was a bi-level restaurant that was generally busy throughout the week. Now, it’s become a hole in the wall with really limited seating and although the service is still above average, the freshness and variety has suffered. I used to be a fan of their spicy scallop sushi and clam miso soup. Maybe my tastebuds have matured, maybe it was pure nostalgia, but it just isn’t as good anymore. Normally I’d have no problem devouring an entire sushi for two, but I found it very difficult to stomach the tuna and toro slices. One had an extremely bloody aftertaste, and the other tasted akin to water. This used to be my filler spot between high-end sushi restaurants, but it’s really become mediocre. I can’t say much on how the appetizers have changed over the years, but when I ordered the uni special, I was left very unimpressed. The uni lacked flavor. I left very disappointed. I really liked this place in the past.

Mishima is the best Japanese(sushi) restaurant in the neighborhood. It is a little bit pricier than other places, BUT the quality of fish there is noticeably superior to those of other restaurants in the area and is well worth the extra dollar or two. Additionally, they have a lot of unique and tasty specials that seem to change seasonally.

This was the best sushi I’ve had in a long while. Everything was fresh and authentic — you can tell the chef puts great effort in his work. I could not believe how fresh the ingredients were! I was so pleasantly surprised. So many times urchin, salmon roe and squid can be just a tinge off. All of it was phenomenal — I really cannot wait to come back.

This is one of my most absolute favorite spot in this city. I always hesitated leaving them a review because I would actually like to keep it as it is now: a hidden gem. But they deserve my recognition! I have been coming for years now, I don’t even know how many times I possibly ate there — probably close to 50, 60 times? So you can assume my review is pretty representative of the situation. Please note that this is for eat-in lunch only, I have never had dinner there nor used their delivery service. As many people said, this is a very small restaurant, very intimate, with one sushi chef who obviously takes a lot of pride in his work. The sushi are 90% of the time AMAZING. And the other 10% it is really good. Out of the dozens of time I ate there, I don’t remember ever leaving disappointed. I ate a lot of sushi in Japan and this place is on par with what I experienced over there, if not better. A sushi deluxe(9 sushi + 1 california roll + soup + fruits for desser) will cost you $ 16 — again, for lunch. I would pay twice more if that’s what they were asking. I remember that one time where the fish was simply out of this world, and I jokingly asked the waitress where I could buy the same. She explained me that unlike many restaurants, they do not use different providers based on market price. They always stick to the same because they know they deliver great quality. Gotta love a restaurant with ethics! Also, this is a true Japanese place, with sushi, maki rolls, tempura, etc… so don’t expect cray dragon rolls, rainbow rolls, GI joe rolls, or any sort of drenched-into-spicy-mayo rolls. Besides the sushi, I have tried many other items: their green tea noodles are sooo good, and it comes with a small and delicious chirashi, and tempura. Again, for the price and quality, it is uncanny. Teriyaki salmon is delicious too. For a sample of different things go with the bento box. They also serve some whole fish(like there is literally a whole grilled fish in the plate), but I’ve never tried that. As far as the service goes, honestly it depends. It can drag quite a bit when the place is full and they have deliveries to deal with on top of that, they can get a little overwhelmed. But again there is only one sushi chef. Anyway, as long as this place will be around I will return again & again!

Mishima is in a small club of affordable sushi Manhattan that is made properly. Traditional menu offerings, traditional preparations, good to great quality consistently. The sad thing is there are just not that many places like this in the city any longer. If you are into mayonnaise and eel sauce soaked sushi, this place is not for you. That being said I would not go out of my way to go here either. Certainly bare bones typical as far as the décor, and not the most comfortable place in the world, but if you are in the area and looking for correctly prepared Japanese food and sushi, order a sushi or sashimi chef’s choice and it will not disappoint as far as the value/quality ratio goes.

Now that I live in Murray Hill, actually recently renamed Rose Hill, I’ve become a regular at several local restaurants, and it’s almost certain that my family will default to Mishima whenever we don’t want to cook dinner or whenever we can’t decide what we want to eat. The space is intimate; the restaurant seats no more than twenty or so people. The chef prides himself in using traditional preparation methods and the freshest ingredients, and the waitresses are the friendliest and recognize every face to come in. We always start with appetizers, so here are a few of my favorites: — uni on the half shell — crawfish salad roll — fried shrimp — horse mackerel tataki — avocado salad — clam or lobster miso soup — mushroom soup For sashimi and sushi, you can always ask what’s fresh or if the chef has any recommendations. Sometimes it’s giant clam or striped jack. Others times it can be amberjack or fatty yellowtail. I love their entrees(at lunch and dinner time) because I can always use a miso broiled salmon or grilled yellowtail neck served with brown rice, calm miso soup, and their seasonal sides, salad, and pickled radish. My brother always gets a dragon roll and a shrimp tempura roll, so keep in mind that there are modern Americanized rolls for you to get as well. … I just pretty much listed their entire menu didn’t I? But just a heads up, their menu is constantly changing due to what’s available seasonally, so don’t go looking for crawfish in the winter or mushroom soup in the summer. For photos, check here:
Hope you enjoy the simplicity and freshness of the menu as much as I do!

Weekday Lunch 2PM Daily Lunch Specials were very appropriate for the season and exciting although there were only five choices to choose from — this special is handwritten and attached or sticked to the menu. The Daily Lunch Specials are a set, like Ippudo. This time of the year in Japan often we enjoy a hotpot for a family or friends but for a single, Nabeyaki Udon or Sukiyaki is the seasonal choice and they did have Nabeyaki Udon today. One other dish, caught my eyes were Sake Kama(Salmon Collar) that was a huge piece of salmon. The collar of fish contains a little more fat than the rest of the salmon and when broiled or grilled, it is very juicy and tender. I went for a greedy choice, Soba, Tempura, small Chirashi, and with salad all for $ 16. My friend got Chirashi Lunch($ 13). Sashim, egg, and pickles were packed in a small lacquered box and she said after, she wishes there were more rice to satisfy the thick cut Sashimi. My choice that has many items on the plate was very comforting and satisfying. It’s not the best Japanese in the city but made me and my friend(Japanese) feel at home although the execution of my tempura was disappointing. The execution was closer to the Tempura Udon at Pan-ya in EV but perfectly cooked shrimp Tempura was hard to say anything bad. It wasn’t overcooked and I could taste the juicy shrimp, The dough on each items weren’t light and crispy that I expect for Tempura in a Japanese owned restaurant but our meals were like mother’s elevated cooking, mother’s cooking = love = soul cooking = comforting. Mishima to us was just that. I will come back to try that deliciously executed Salmon Kam soon. I can’t wait!

I have visited to Mishima many times, and every single time it was great! I am a Japanese, but I can say there is perfect sushi. You have to try Tuna and Toro, because he always has really nice them.

i came here for lunch during the week and ordered the bento box, which is $ 16 and you get to choose 3 items from a list that includes sushi, sashimi, donkatsu, and some basic rolls. I decided to go with salmon teriyaki, spicy tuna roll, and sashimi. overall, it was not bad. they give you 4 generous slices of sashimi(they have me tuna and salmon), the spicy tuna roll was small but decent, but the salmon teriyaki was very small. they do give you soup and a bowl of rice too, but i dont think its worth $ 20(including tax + tip). also, the service is slow. the staff is friendly, but I dont expect it to take an hour for my lunch to come out.

Very nice, straightforward real Japanese eatery. The flavor of the sushi is more simple like in Japan, so I wouldn’t go here if I wanted the decked out Americanized rolls. The staff were attentive as well. Felt like I was in a little shop in Tokyo.

Pretty much go here once or twice a month; this restaurant is more known to locals. This place gets packed so it’s good to make reservations(theres about 6 tables, and about 5 seating at the sushi bar) Tried pretty much everything on the menu. Sashimi are always fresh.

Came for a late lunch and sat at the bar. I was carving for a churasi and kind of liked it when I had it here last time. Only two tables of customers. The chirasi rice is pretty good with the right amount of vinegar. At least the sushi chef is Japanese. I felt good until I started hearing the owner telling at their workers. She just wouldn’t stop nagging. The entire 45 min I was there she wouldnt stop with her sarcastic comments and it just ruined my idea of a relaxing lunch. Ugh I will not come back here because of that.
