Decent food. Had the stewed goat with rice. A bit pricey though imo. Dirty chairs and overall dirty restaurant…

Not all Jamaican spots are good. This place sucks. Rubbery rice. Dry stew chicken. Nasty cabbage pea carrot mix. No bueno.

I have visited more Golden Krust than I can remember, however this is by far the worst customer experience I have encountered and the nastiest food I ever ate from any of the locations. I craved Oxtails and decided to walk the 6 blocks to the nearest Golden Krust for lunch. After patiently waiting to place my order, I ordered my favorite Jamaican Cruisine Oxtails and rice. I watched 3 customers before me all pay with a credit card, the gentle man who went before me card declined twice however he eventually found one that worked. Now that it is my turn to pay I have a choice I have money in one hand however opt to pay with my chase card to keep cash on hand. The cashier obviously annoyed with my choice, says«you have I. D» I asked her why? I just watched you take payments from the customers in front of me and you did not ask anyone for identification. Her response and pay attention to the quotes” Because I know them”. Well I have never heard such a thing from an employee Policy is policy you either ask for identification or you do not. Knowing someone is certainly not the answer. In any event I give her my I. D and now she is annoyed because I guess no one questions her authority. She throws my receipts and walk away. The food was disgusting and I am not saying that because she left a terrible taste in my mouth, it was actually the nastiest Oxtails I ever ate in my life. They tasted as if someone boiled them in water and let them sit out for a few days and dry out. There was no juice or seasoning. The rice was ok. The cabbage was half way cooked. All in all the worst experience I have had at any restaurant to date.

The food has gotten worse over the years. The chicken patty seems like it just has this paste in it. Like goop. Slime? Nothing curry chicken about what’s in the patty. Probably won’t be going back for that again.

Jerked by jerked chicken. I really dont understand how these guys are charging almost $ 8 for a mini that included a leg, half a thigh with rice peas and a few strands of cabbage. Also, the chicken looks baked and doesnt really taste that jerked :(maybe they were reserving on the spices idk

I ordered the chicken curry and was a little disappointed due to the large amount of bones and in the curry. The small pieces of bone made it difficult to enjoy as I constantly had to watch out for my teeth in every bite. No complaints over the flavor. The service was a tad below average. The employee snickered when I asked what they offered to drink. This made some sense when he pointed at a refrigerator with Arizona bottled drinks. That is all they offered, and that was not only limited selection, but a bad one too with only unpopular flavors being available.

Avoid the oxtail at all cost… Consider your selves warned! This is not how Jamaican made oxtails are suppose to look or taste. I paid $ 14 for a small plate with rice and peas and threw the whole thing in the garbage! Waste of my $$

This is by far one of the worst locations of the Golden Krust franchaise. Staff(ESPECIALLY) the young lady that is consistently on her cell phone while processing orders. Rude, inattentive and good for wasting one’s time. It’s best not to arrive here before noon because nothing will be ready with the exception of the patties which are dry and oftentimes tasteless. I’ve noticed that these stores are slowly becoming extinct — this one will follow suit.

Honestly not as bad as I was prepared for it to be. The Patties were absolutely awful though. Also the service could not have been ANY slower. I do enjoy caribbean and Jamaican food but this just did not hit the expectations I had…2 stars

first time i order from this location and i was happy they actually offer delivery. i called and placed my order, an hour later i call to find out why i havent received my food and the answer i get is that the person i spoke to should have told me it would be a «while» for the delivery, when i asked what is a «while», she said that they had 5 pending deliveries and the 2nd one wasnt out yet, i asked to cancel my order and she said ok. she did not apologize for wasting my time. the service sucks!

I love this spot. This place gives you fresh delicious gianttttt portions for a really good price. The patties are not the greatest I’ve ever had but they are good. The oxtail is sooooooo good. Thick gravy full of spices poured all over a huge bed of delicious rice and red beans. Jerk chicken is fall off the bone tender and juicy. The spices are just enough. Sweet plantains are soft and sweet. Vegetables fresh. Service is always prompt and if you’re nice they will treat you respectfully and maybe even smile ;)

Golden Krust Review While New York University is surrounded by a seemingly endless variety of ethnic restaurants, Caribbean cuisine is in short supply. But now that I’ve found a place for great jerk chicken, the spicy, rich flavors of Jamaican soul food are keeping me going during all-night study sessions. Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery and Grill is a fast-food store on 14th Street and Sixth Avenue known for Jamaican patties. The franchise is owned by Maurice Mayhew, who left his marketing manager position at American Express and took a chance opening the Jamaican eatery 10 years ago. Today, Mayhew’s outpost is still in its original spot nestled between a Subway sandwich shop and Popeyes Chicken and Biscuits. The store stands out on the American fast-food-dominated block, but for more reasons than its bright yellow awning: Hardly any restaurants around Union Square offer Jamaican eats. The island country’s small presence in the neighborhood and Manhattan could explain why. In the West Village and Greenwich Village, less than 1 percent of the community is Jamaican. In all of Manhattan, only 1 percent of foreign-born immigrants are from Jamaica, according to 2011 U.S. Census Bureau reports. But don’t let Manhattan’s numbers fool you: New York City is home to roughly 169,200 Jamaicans, most of whom live in the Bronx and Brooklyn. Census statistics indicate Jamaicans make up nearly 50 percent of the foreign-born community in the Bronx’s Woodlawn and Wakefield neighborhoods, while roughly 71,000 live in central and eastern Brooklyn. This massive Jamaican market is why 44 of the 107 total Golden Krust stores operate in these two boroughs alone. The Golden Krust near NYU may be outside the Brooklyn-Bronx cluster, but Mayhew loves the diverse customer base that comes with being located in Manhattan. If you’re not around Union Square, three Golden Krusts are scattered in Harlem and two are near Grand Central Terminal in the heart of Midtown. But if you’re studying on campus, Mayhew’s Golden Krust is worth a visit. For a quick bite, Unilocalers recommend Golden Krust’s signature patties. Choose from three beef, two chicken and four vegetarian filling options all under $ 3. The menu also offers eight small or large combo meal options, with chicken being the main ingredient. The six meat-based combos come with a generous portion of rice and peas, fried plantains and boiled greens. For $ 12 to $ 14, you can’t go wrong with the gravy-drenched braised oxtail; the meat is so tender it falls off the bone when barely teased with a fork. Other delectable choices include the slow-roasted jerk chicken combo for $ 11.50 to $ 13.25. It’s worth it to fork over a few more dollars for their bakery menu, which boasts over 12 different sweet Jamaican pastries and cakes. The Jamaican rum cake is a must-have slice of sugary heaven for $ 3.50. While the food is definitely worth your dough, it’s best to get it to go. The dining area barely seats 16 guests. But the atmosphere isn’t why you come to Golden Krust. It’s to grab that styrofoam box of comfort food to get you through your nasty midterm schedule.

My Friend and I were heading to an off Broadway show located only one block away, we were 45 minutes early and decided to grab a quick and cheap bite, we spotted Golden Crust and decided to give it a try. happy we did, we both ordered the stew chicken and were satisfied. the place is small but neat with a few chairs and tables if you decide to stay and eat. Overall it was okay and if i am in the neighborhood i will once again give it a try, this time I will go for the jerk chicken.

I usually avoid Golden Krust since it is a chain and I know where to get West Indian/Caribbean food. Today however I was in a rush, on 14 Street and didn’t feel like walking to West 4th Street to get food as was my plan. I came in here not knowing what I would get. I didn’t want like a big meal but a bit more than a snack. I ordered the Jerk chicken salad which is 2 pieces of jerk chicken over a green salad. I was asked if I wanted white or dark ea, I opted for the dark meat. I got my entrée in a to go container. It was the whole leg chopped up in 4 pieces over a salad of romaine lettuce(I think) shredded carrots and red bell peppers. I didn’t take dressing but did get the jerk sauce so that was what flavored the salad. The chicken itself was flavorful, hot and spicy but not too hot. The chicken skin was also fairly crispy which was good.

Of all the Jamaican places in NYC this ranks as on of the most basic. Like most major restaurant chains, the quality of the wood will likely suffer at the desire to produce it on a mass scale. As a Jamaican I can say that Golden Krust is no different. They have all the major Jamaican dishes(oxtail, curry chicken, beef patties, etc…) but all of them are missing that personal touch that makes Jamaican food as awesome as it is. I’ve had the oxtail here as well as the stew chicken and both were very standard and left much to desire. The restaurant itself is more of a take out place with minimal seating. Service is actually better than most Jamaican places which tend to be painfully slow, but it’s still not S efficient as it can be. This would be fine if the food were amazing, but unfortunately it isn’t. This place is cool to come to if you’re in the area and maybe want a quick beef patty, but for authentic and delicious Jamaican food you’re better off heading up to the Bronx on White Plains Road or Brooklyn.

Ever wanted something so bad, worked hard to get it and then realize it wasn’t worth the trouble? That was this Golden Krust experience. Jamaican Oxtail is not something to be trifled with. Either you know how to make it or you don’t. There is no halfway mark, especially not at $ 13.50 a plate from Golden Krust. Oxtail has a depth and a richness, a complexity in taste, something that sticks to your ribs and comforts your soul all at the same time. Ay suh! is the eclamation that comes to mind. Dis here? Dis here mussi oxtail cousin. No richness no depth it’s was like watching a movie in IMAX3D and then seeing the same movie again in a regular no frills theater. I mean you get the gist but it’s just not the same. The service at 2:40 pm was great, no line, friendly. The amount of food was more than plenty, lots of rice, cabbage and meat. Now if the meat actually tasted like something. Life would be good. Well, what tun bad as Mums would say: «What tun bad a mawnin caan tun good a evenin!!»

The best patties. My favorite is the jerk chicken. They’re very reasonably priced. This Golden Krust is bigger and cleaner than some of their other locations.

The mission statement is «Golden Krust exists to provide the taste of the Caribbean to the world.» I love Caribbean food and Golden Krust is where all New Yorkers go! I have not been to this location before. I only get Jamaican patties at Golden Krust. Like Matt E I have also heard that their patties are what you go for. Over the years I probably have had the meals but really love the Jerk chicken patties. We didn’t take pictures we wolfed them down too fast! I had Jerk Chicken patty as I usually do and my hubby had the beef patty. The 3 stars is only because it is a chain. No other reason and I only eat the patties. The crust here was a little harder not as flaky and light as I have had at other locations but still hit the spot!
