Overall the food was very good. Everything was pretty enjoyable but the whole experience was kind of strange. My friend and I ordered he exact same thing and one arrived like 5 minutes before the other. I had the shau lon pau pork soup dumplings. They were good like dim sum always is, but nothing really special. I would like to go back and try more things because it seems like they have a great menu and everyone at the restaurant was enjoying different things. The hot delicious green tea was a plus. And I was full for only $ 6, although some of their bigger plates can be more expensive like $ 10. The staff was nice and I would be willing to come back and give this place another try.

Every time I go to Chinatown, this is a must stop spot… It has large tables where you just sit next to whomever and gives you that hole in the wall spot(which I love) the food comes out very quick and very good. Obviously the dumplings are great and like someone said in a review the scallion pancakes are amazing!

CAMEHERE2 times in a week with friends. Totally worth. The place is kinda small, but that’s to be expected. It’s really good food though and the staff is really attentive. They do things sorta dim sum style, bring you plates as you order them. I suggest that you do this: straight appetizers. Only. And do that for your whole meal. Split it between like 3 people and a few plates later you’re fuller than if you ordered a single entrée! Highly recommend the scallion pancakes. Basically greasy hashbrown wedges, but they’re great and super cheap. I had 3 plates of them.

Yet another cheap dinner place in Chinatown. Don’t you ever wonder how some of these places cost so little and stay afloat? Regardless of what business acumen they possess, we’re always grateful to have places like Excellent Dumpling to turn to for dinner without spending $ 30/person. As is usual with these Chinatown restaurants, the service and food is fast, cheap, and served without much care. We ordered the wontons with spicy sauce since one of us was craving it, then followed that with scallion pancakes and Triple(chicken, beef, shrimp) with garlic sauce on a sizzling plate. This was already shaping up to be a lot more food that we can handle. Wontons and pancakes came quickly and hot. The wontons were in a vinegar heavy hot sauce mixed with peanut butter sauce. If you’re looking for spicy, this was not the place for it, I had to add more sriracha. Favorite part about it was the lightly cooked bean sprouts that rounded out the dish. Least favorite part was the wontons that were mushy, possibly under-cooked, and lacking in filling flavor. The pancakes were plain, old tasting like it’s been sitting under warming lights all day. We were looking forward to the entrée to start anew. The entrée came on a nice sizzling plate filled with a lot of peppers and celery. Most of the meats were buried under the vegetables. If you’ve had anything with garlic sauce in a Chinese restaurant before, you already know what this tastes like. Nothing special, but crispy veggies, soft meats, and a slightly sweet garlic sauce. It went perfect with white rice. There are definitely better places in this area for wontons, for pancake, and for garlic sauce entrees.

Had a really great dining experience here for a decent price. Walked out paying $ 10 with a tip! Ordered the chicken with cashews, a chicken dumpling, and white rice. Strongly recommend adding some spice to it.

You go to Chinatown for the sensory overload. Sights, sounds, smells and, if course, food. The Excellent Dumpling House is one of those legendary eateries with a loyal following. The appeal is the price, fast service and the quality of the food. I tried the chicken with broccoli lunch and found it a remarkable value. Very, very good hot and sour soup, well cooked white meat chicken and fresh, al dente, broccoli with a tiny — but meh– spring roll — it ran under $ 7. Amazing for NYC. But seated next to me at a communal table was a local eating chicken dumplings. I asked if they were good. He smiled and, with a mouth full of hot dumpling said, Mmmmmm! I ordered them too. They earned a wow! I recommend you try this well reviewed classic. The buzz at lunch was intoxicating. The basic Chinese fare is 4 star good. Add the dumplings and it notches up to 5 stars for me. My lunch was $ 15 with two entrees. You could make a meal if you ordered the dumplings alone. You would and out for $ 9 — including a fair tip. Go, you’ll thank me later!

Oh PAHLEASEEEE with that B rating on the door. Don’t let it scare you away. LISTEN, do you know how many Chinese spots there are in that area? Like a million and not everyone has been around as long as Joe Shanghai has(ohh. get ready for that review). So it’s safe to say that competition is tough and they aren’t really located in the best area where you would see a lot of asian customers. So. with that being said. The food is amazing. We had the chicken in garlic sauce and it was AMAZING, and my lovely Chinese friend who brought me there in the first place goes their often and fully approves most of the items on the menu. If you’re feeling some Chinese food and you don’t want to walk all the way to Pell street for it just walk on in. You really wont be disappointed. Prices though. They jacked things up a dollar on every item so I’m goingggg to have to say I think this is more in the $$ range.

My first experience here was just OK rather than Excellent, though I should probably stop in for a proper order of dumplings next time. As it was, I came in to grab a quick dish from the lunch specials and ended up getting one of the dishes that comes with dumplings, which was pricier than the rest, and included some rather soggy dumplings. I should have stuck with something standard and not tried to combine everything together.

Love their dumplings. If it’s your first time, you can try their appetizer sampker and fron there, just choose which you prefer and order a separate order of that one. Their entrees come in big servings and can be shared + they come with rice. The service is good, they were very polite and the house tea is free. Will definitely go back. There is also a restroom which is quite clean. ;)

This place is not that good. Its a tourist trap and not really Schezuan style heat. Its great for tourist from Minnesota who never tried chinese food before. Thats what the place is filled with. The dishes are not spicy and were really bland for some reason. The food pictures outside really grab your attention but the thats a trap ! Not really Schezuan cuisine as the name implys

B Rating be damned, the food was delicious! The beau and I were early for an event we were attending in SoHo, so we decided to scour Chinatown for something greasy and hedonistic. Tucked in just south of the corner of Canal and Lafayette, we shuffled into a clean and brightly lit little restaurant. Unilocal reviews boasted excellent fried dumplings and scallion pancakes, so of course we had to make an order of each, coupled with some chicken and broccoli. The fried pork dumplings and the scallion pancakes ARE amazing. I will add myself and the beau to the tally of lovers! The chicken and broccoli was pretty good as well, with fresh slices of garlic interspersed. The chicken itself… it was a little too chewy for my liking, but not awful. The broccoli was bright and still a little crisp, which I liked. This is a hole in the wall not to be ignored!

Been coming here for last 15 yrs. and dont recall ever being disappointed. Dumplings, steamed or fried, are always fresh & succulent. Seasoning in all their dishes is spot on(not too salty, not too bland). Noise level is comfortable for holding conversations and the room temperature is very comfortable. Lots of selections of noodle based dishes, soups, seafood, and more. My routine is essentially to start with an order of scallion pancakes, with some seafood steamed dumplings followed by whatever i’m in the mood that day. Since i tend to go with a friend, we split all dishes, which makes for a meal with variety. Now, for coffee and dessert i prefer after i am done here to first stretch my legs going for a short walk and then end at the Dragon Land Bakery(& Café) a couple of blocks away.

Passed by this small restaurant in China Town and went in to grab something quick to eat. Had high expectations because of the restaurant name and good reviews on Unilocal!Glad I got to try it out! Ordered a few sets of the xiao long bao(pork soup dumplings) to share and it was very delicious! It was fresh, hot, and definitely got me wanting more after I finished. Service was decent, nothing special but very fast! Definitely want to come back again!

So good. I ordered the fried green beans, Hot and Sour soup, and soup dumplings. Literally the best Green beans and Hot and Sour soup I’ve ever had. And I like to think of myself as a hot and sour soup connoisseur. Needless to say it was insanely delicious. It was first time having soup dumplings so I can’t really speak to if they’re authentic, but they sure were tasty. I mean REALLY tasty. I’m taking everyone I know here.

I hate Chinese food. But I loved the food served here. I suppose because it’s more authentic. My friend was down here visiting. She likes nice simple Chinese food, which this place definitely offered. I love spicy food so I told them to make my beef stew extra spicy. Well I jumped the gun on that one because every time I took a bite I’d choke my brains out. Way way too spicy to even enjoy. I could taste the deliciousness of the broth underneath that though so it was pure torture having something so good in front of me then choking on it lol. We also got pork fried dumplings as an appetizer. Yum!!! Delicious!!! They also serve green tea. Hot green tea plus choking on spicy food = not a good situation. My friend enjoyed it immensely though. It was awesome. She got to experience Chinatown and everything. Plus it was at a great price! Try this place.

I love dumplings and when a restaurant is named Excellent Dumpling House of course I am going to have high expectations. The scallion pancakes are delicious! We got two orders since we just couldn’t get enough of it. Be sure to try them. My friend ordered the beef soup noodles. The broth was very good and the beef was so soft and tasty. We also got the wonton with spicy sauce, again it was great. Last, we tried the seafood dumpling, no complaints here. The skin is not doughy at all, very soft and almost melts in your mouth when you take a bite. Will I come back here? For sure!

I go to New York once a year. I’ve been doing that for almost 25 years. I stumbled into this place somewhere in the late 90s, and I make it a point to return every year. It’s in the heart of Chinatown, so it’s a great destination while you’re shopping. It’s a great blend of authentic Chinese with Americanized sweet-and-sour-whatever. I love that it’s generally busy, with a really wide menu for an affordable price. The food is good — better than your typical Chinese take-out. The service is rather cold, in a New York way. They are interested in making you happy, but they are also interested in keeping it moving, making sure they can seat the next party. So eat your awesome General Tso’s and move along. You’ve had a great meal and it’s time to let someone else enjoy.

So I was a bit under the weather, and EDH was a quick walk, and I decided to try it out. The place was nearly empty at around 7:30 on a Sunday night, so the staff was quick to help us. I ordered a hot and sour soup, along with an order of curry chicken, while my girlfriend got sweet and sour chicken. We ordered take-out, and within five minutes our order was ready and we were out the door. When we got back, the food was still hot, and they had poked a hole in the lid of my curried chicken to let some of the steam off. Great idea, as the food was still hot, but not scalding when I went to eat it. The soup was excellent, as it was loaded with Tofu and a few pork chunks. The broth was thick and – though I’m not great with spices – it was a manageable level of spice that cleared up my sinuses. For both orders, EDH included rice for us to throw our meal over, which was excellent for my curry. Tasty peppers and chicken, all in a rich and thick curry sauce. The serving size was huge, as we both had plenty of leftovers – enough for me to have as a sizable lunch the next day at work. All things considered, I thought the $ 26 combined was a lot, but it ended up being two meals worth of food for both myself and my girlfriend. Though nothing wowed me, I’d certainly come here again.
