Food is so flavorful, so authentic. Staff is so attentive, so friendly. Very personable. The main guy that takes orders remembers exactly who we are when come in and knows exactly what we order every time we come in. He even remember to not add cheese to my burrito. We probable make it out here once every 2 – 3 months. So he has an awesome memory. I love this place. It’s about time I left a review for this establishment!

Really bad food and food service. Not going back ever again. Argumentative and rude. Gross.

Read the very positive reviews — I was psyched. If you’re Mexican don’t order chilaquiles — they are not made with tortillas they’re made with chips. Told the guy at the counter that these were not chilaquiles — we said I know but that’s what we do here. My friend’s huevos rancheros were good — so 2 stars. If you’re Mexican or like Mexican food go somewhere else — the israeli place Spiegel 1 block down has good chilaquiles.

Amazing. just simply amazing. Tortillas are perfect and whats on the menu is whats in your burrito. I’ve been looking for a breakfast burrito like their Potato breakfast burrito for months and its everything I hoped for and more. Eggs are actual eggs and potatoes are actual diced potatoes. warning: their hot sauce is amazing, but if you’re not a fan of hot sauce ask them to leave it off.

Don’t be fooled by it’s appearance, this place has been around for so long for a good reason and it was not easy for us to discover: it is a true hidden gem. We are blown away by their breakfast burritos and keep coming back for more! Easily one of the best in the neighborhood. Today also tried their Huevos Rancheros to stay. What a gorgeous plate! Super satisfying with a homemade taste. Today Saturday I feel well taken care of and I can happily go back home to keep working. Definitely recommended for a try and to make a regular spot.

Friendly folks behind the counter at this no-frills Mexican kitchen. Great for a quick bite in the east village any time of day, including the huevos rancheros for breakfast. Items hover between $ 8-$ 11.

I got their bean and cheese tacos and loved it. Very tiny place but food is so fresh and delicious. The boyf absolutely loves their breakfast burritos. Over all the have lots of vegetarian options and the food is so yummy for a reasonable price. Their green sauce is good to make sure you get some if you’re getting it to go.

Great little hole in the wall, solid food, pretty inexpensive. BUT, the verde sauce is sooo spicy. Too much for me(got chiliquiles verde)… So be forewarned.

Some of the most authentic and delicious Mexican food I’ve found in the city to date. Their wet burritos are my favorite, especially the La Morena which is on the specials board(which never changes) and comes doused in a tasty chipotle sauce. Generous portions and high quality ingredients are what keep me coming back. Also recommend the steak torta and chicken mole burrito. The pico de gallo is really good, worth getting a side of it! The employees are awesome. Recommend calling ahead for pick up!

Best taco place in the city. Hole in the wall east village location with an unclear name, maybe to keep a bit of secrecy. Some of the best and most unique tacos available. They serve two large tacos per order so watch how you much you order though you will be tempted to order everything. Staff is friendly and great. Makes for a great experience.

Picked up a to go chicken mole burrito last week. I was actually floored by how good it was. I need to make this a regular stop — and need to try some of the slightly more mexican options — as I bet they are fantastic.

This place has the best Mexican food ever! My favorite is La Morena(a chicken burrito that easily feeds 2) and my son loves the chicken quesadilla that is totally customized to his likes. The people are super friendly and inviting. The guacamole is to die for– made from scratch daily. The evening shift is my favorite bunch. I have known Coco for some time now and he always gets my order perfect. I can eat at this place everyday! The price point is super affordable and worth every penny. The best family owned business that still thrives in the neighborhood! Coco, Thierry says, «Saludosss!»

I was blown away. The people who work there are so kind, nice, friendly, and the food matches their personalities. Full of life, flavor, and utterly delicious. One of the best burritos I’ve had in a LONG time. Their wet burrito’s are on point. Homemade sauces, fresh ingredients, just amazing. Make sure you check out their specials!

Came after a Sunday morning run to this cozy Mexican joint for some traditional breakfast. Lots of choices and great pricing. I ordered the steak and eggs(green) chilaquiles with avocado and black beans and it was amazing. The sauce was a little spicier than I had anticipated but still palatable and generous portion size. I will definitely return and try other dishes. It’s worth noting that there is limited seating and space inside. It can get crowded when it gets busy every now and then. Service is relatively quick for such a small kitchen space.

If you frequent the neighborhood, you’ve probably walked past this place 100 times. You might have even ordered a burrito here that one time. What you likely don’t know is there is a treasure hiding right under your nose. While the burritos are certainly above average, what you want here is a torta, a Mexican sandwich. I would suggest a torta de bistec, steak sandwich, to start. What you get is a perfectly toasted sesame hero roll stuffed with well seasoned pieces of steak, cheese, avocado, jalapeños, black beans, lettuce, and tomato. It’s a serious meal and one of my favorite things to eat in this city. Eat it in their sparse space unless you can get it home in under 5 minutes to fully appreciate it. I’ll stop drooling now.

I have been here about 10 – 12 times and enjoyed 10 – 12 fabulous El Caballo(steak) burritos. It’s getting embarrassing to keep ordering the same thing(the menu is huge and, in principle, I want to try everything), but I when I get around to ordering, I can’t seem to stray from this. It’s one of the specials on the chalkboard.(The specials seem to be permanent, for which I am glad.) This is a burrito for meat lovers who don’t want their burrito to be all about carb-on-carb action, by which I mean a stupidly enormous burrito filled mostly with boring flavorless rice. THIS burrito is chock full of steak, balanced with some terrific black beans and rice. The best part is that this burrito is covered with 3 different sauces, poured over lovingly to match the colour scheme of the Mexican flag — guacamole, sour cream, and a killer spicy, smoky red guajillo sauce. The burritos change a tiny bit from visit to visit(amount of sauce or size of burrito), but it’s always delicious. The price seems to float around, I’ve paid $ 8, $ 9 and $ 10 for the El Caballo. The price is always right, because this burrito is fabulous. I guess a lot of people order takeout from Downtown Bakery. I hope they keeping doing that because that means there’s always a table for me – there are only about 6 seats and 2 stools in this tiny place. When you eat your burrito in-house, you get it burning hot, this is the only way to have it, in my opinion. Service is also great here, super chill and friendly. There’s no bathroom here, so go before you go. Note to Downtown Bakery: the only slightly negative change I’ve noticed is that the earlier burritos I had(in 2014 and early 2015) were also LACED with fresh-chopped cilantro, even finely chopped stalks. This made the burrito so special and incredible, really fresh-tasting. The recent burritos don’t seem to have any cilantro. They are still great, but I would be happier if cilantro found its way back in. See you soon, DB – I’ll have the usual.

Prices have increased(per past reviews and the marking up of the overhead menu), but this was still a very satisfying $ 9(cash only) chicken mole burrito, even if it was an absolute structural abomination(at least they include a knife and fork). The joint’s glass baked goods display was not at all tempting, and the temperature and stench in the joint almost made me turn around, but it was worth it. «Downtown Bakery’s got lots of tasty Mexican treats, but their burritos are top notch, with $ 6.50-$ 9.50 offerings including chicken mole, steak carne asada, ranchero, shrimp, chicken and spinach and more. Best of all, the East Village eatery serves specialty breakfast burritos for the early morning set; check out the $ 5 ranchero breakfast burrito, which comes with eggs, chopped green peppers, onions, tomatoes, jack cheese and black refried beans, or gun for the $ 7 steak breakfast burrito, stuffed with shredded steak, eggs and cheese.» «Long ago it was an Italian bakery, then it turned into a Mexican bakery. Finally, a few tables were thrown down and a massive menu of southern Mexican peasant fare was added: enchiladas drenched in chile-based sauces, masa antojitos in multiple permutations, plus some Tex-Mex stuff thrown in for good measure, including a perfect version of one of New York’s most elusive dishes, breakfast tacos.» «This modest place evolved out of an Italian bakery nearly 20 years ago, but now serves an all-Mex menu of cut-rate burritos, breakfast tacos, enchiladas, chilaquiles, hard– and soft-shell tacos, and other quick grab-and-go delights, many with a Pueblan flair. There are three tables if you want to sit down and be civilized.»

Foodwise this place is pretty great, and inexpensive. I need to come back for more to giv eyou a better review but seemed as legit as it gets, being in NY(similar to say Sunset Park in BK). BTW, I grew up in Mexico until after college and I tend to be pretty harsh with Mexican style food. So I would give them 4 stars except the place could be a bit cleaner and better organized. They are very nice but the service is not that fast. Seems like a local, family biz though, which is a good reason to support them — but I’m not sure about that. Not large so groups not recommended. Cash only.
