Waitress ripped me off. Asked for an Irish coffee but with hot chocolate, listed as $ 7. She charged me for whiskey and hot chocolate separately(total of$ 15) and then had the nerve to call it ghetto Irish coffee.

Eh. Could be such a cozy place in the neighborhood BUT I have zero tolerance for impersonal, snobby hosts and arrogant bartenders who won’t give me the time of day. Huge props for warm & fuzzy bartenders who cater to your needs BUT you won’t find them here. After 20 years in th the biz, is it really that hard to serve a cup of coffee with a smile and w/out spilling it sans aploogy? Yeah, i dont need cream and sugar and thanks for not offering them. The food was satisfying but the overall experience makes me not want to run back there.

We came here purely for later-night drinks and their extensive whiskey list. We found the bartender to be very friendly even though he could probably play tight end for at least the Tennessee Titans. The cocktails we had were excellent and the beer list was alright. I dug the chill vibe and could see myself here to watch the game on Sundays or for a chill evening on any night.

Feel like home, and this beautiful spot definitely becomes my favorite bar in NYC. Dropped here for several brunch and late night drinks, foods are good(they thoughtfully served butter and jam with my omelet plant without asking!) Drinks are great(love pumpkin beer a lot) Service is stunning(they are busy but never let you wait) I have to say it’s the best service ever experienced! Time here is enjoyable, foods and drinks and some talks with good mood, oh life, that’s all about it, isn’t it?!

Food was very tasty. Ambiance was nice, relaxed and open air The server who took our order was friendly, but the overall service and organization was bad. Just bad One person in our group didn’t receive either of their plates they ordered. Servers didn’t notice. We flagged one down and told him. 5 min later our female server comes to ask if something’s wrong. So. No communication going on. She clears it up with the kitchen, but even then he doesn’t get his food until all of the rest of us are done and our plates have been cleared. And then we had to initiate the«no charge for that, right?» conversation which was super awkward and should have been on the part of the restaurant to bring up. After that, the slice of cake we surprise ordered for the birthday boy in the party just gets brought out and bluntly placed in front of him«cake? who ordered cake?» he starts on the cheesecake slice, and we have to flag our server down to ask if we can also order dessert. Then finally after all said and done we wait 20 min for the check. I won’t go back. Food was delicious, but nothing you couldn’t find in a million places with much smoother service

I consider myself a bit of a discriminating bar maven(my range — anywhere from dive bar to the fancy schmancy type) so color me happy when this bar opened in my hood. And extra brownie points that it served the type of liquor I love — brown brown and more brown. I have gone periodically throughout the years since it opened, mostly because I knew the drinks and food were reliable and good — two qualities that are hard to find in an area seemingly overrun by frat boy bro bars. While those serve their purpose, I really just wanted a bar that was low key enough where I didn’t have to shout to have a conversation but discriminating enough in which the type and quality of liquor actually mattered.(They also do tastings on Tuesdays) In other words, B&G is my sweet spot. B&G has a good vibe about it and recently, I’ve been a much more frequent guest of this establishment. A lot of that is due to the staff, who are always ready to greet me with a smile and whose welcoming nature makes me happy to come back again and again… While I am a big fan of the staff overall, I should give special mention to Josh, who tends bar most evenings. Professional, knowledgable and personable, he’s the best sort of bartender. But what stands out most of all is that he is also the friendliest and most cheerful bartender I’ve ever met ANYWHERE. I love someone who can mix a good drink but it’s even better when it’s served with a genuine smile. Also, you can tell the attentiveness of a good bartender by his water service and I must say… my water is never less than half full. Thirsty, I will never be(at least as long as Josh is about). Off the menu I would recommend… Food — Chicken Penne(so good, love the sauce), Spaghetti Bolognese(simple but good), the happy hour sliders. Brunch is solid too. Drinks — if you like the brown liquor, this place should do you right. Of particular note — Angel’s Envy Rye and Sonoma 2nd Chance Wheat Whiskey. The cocktails are good too — a rarity in the UWS(they take special care to make sure everything is freshly squeezed, etc). If you go to brunch, they make an excellent bellini and DEFINITELY try the Southhampton Wave(a most excellent and refreshing beer cocktail — it’s awesome!)

I commented to the guy behind the bar that their scotch list was very overpriced. He replied, «no, it’s not. you should go downtown.» I went next door instead. Outrageously overpriced scotches, consistently $ 4-$ 6 more than they should be and more than you’d find anywhere else, including much nicer places. Price gouging much? No wonder it’s empty. Good whiskey selection, nice ambiance, decent food. The service isn’t always the best, but overall a nice change of pace on a block mostly filled with college bars.

E-Scale: 9.5÷10 I use to come here a lot when I knew people who lived in the neighborhood(then they moved) and last night I went back after dinner for drinks. Our waiter Martin was so friendly and professional! The cocktails were well made and the selection of whisky was out of this world. They also have wine and beer available. I had the two types of hushpuppies and the shrimp was much better, I highly recommend it. This is a great place to chat with friends and drink for a few hours. Sometimes the music can get loud, but only when it is very crowded in there. Perhaps the best part is the two happy hours, once at 4 and once at 11. I recommend coming during the second happy hour as it is less crowded and there are seats at the bar(I personally prefer sitting at the bar than at a table).

How I haven’t noticed this adorable establishment before is a mystery to me. Right in the heart of the Upper West Side restaurant fun. Friendly bartender and pretty empty for a Saturday made this the perfect escape from my visiting family. We were give the happy hour prices well before happy hour which was lovely, and some free libations from the bartender(not only for checking in but throughout our stay). Bartender also gladly turned the TV on so I could watch my coveted college football game– great customer service. Sadly, I didn’t have any food so sadly I cannot comment on the treats. Not a 5 star because it didn’t blow my socks off, but it was the perfect location to spend a chilly Saturday afternoon. Will be back!

We came to Barley & Grain this past Sunday after my sister completed her first NYC Marathon! The restaurant was very accommodating, seating our party that ended up being bigger than we had expected. The waitress appropriately split the check as we requested and she was very on top of our drink orders. Food came out rather quickly and everyone enjoyed their meals. Very cute restaurant and would recommend stopping in if you’re uptown.

Their happy hour used to be $ 5 glasses of wine. I miss that. The food here is ehh but I do like the fries. The service is also ehh although the last time I went there the waitress was fairly new and she was super nice. I came in once on a Saturday because on Unilocal and their website it said they had happy hour. They didn’t. When I told the staff about it I got attitude back. You should probably update your website. Just sayin. The only reason I keep coming back is because it’s so conveniently close to my apt. The one plus is that they do have a good selection of Whiskey. Definitely worthy of the 2 stars.

Food was over-fried, burnt. My friends now won’t let me pick the restaurant we go to. They won’t stop talking about how bad it was. And that’s the last time I’ll go. Went three times. Every server seems to be on their first day. Food was off. The drinks were good. The only true virtue of this restaurant is that it’s never crowed. And now you know why.

We kinda made a mistake to grab a real dinner here. Judging form the menu and the portion you’ll soon realize it’s a drink/snack place(barley & grian, DUH) Anyhooo, the drinks were served LIGHTENINGSPEED but food took FOREVER eVen worse, the waiter decided that night he’ll bring up ONE plate for the table, and let the rest of the party wait… hmmm so I had the distinct pleasure of smelling my food and trying to avoid eye contact with it for 15 solid minutes when the food was finally served to everyone, it’s decent portion and solid American fare… just… serve them all at once will ya…

Loved our brunch here on a Saturday morning. We used to live on the UWS and returned for a weekend stay at NYLO on 77th and Bway. Stumbled upon this place and so glad we did. Great outdoor seating(perfect if you have a dog), fresh eggs and homemade bread. Very attentive service. Would definitely recommend.

«Hey look mister. We serve hard drinks in here for men who want to get drunk fast, and we don’t need any characters around to give the joint«atmosphere». Damn hipsters, are ya’ll insane? What the HELL is with these low ratings for Barley & Grain, the«Lighting»? Ahahaha, you friggin hosers Another Tao opened in the Meat Packing district? Good luck, I won’t be there. I’m always on a discovery mission, I want to learn about Rye. I never had it before, I never see available as a Cocktail drink selection. I want to know more about the spirit as well as talk about it with a passionate professional. This is why I chose Barley & Grain as my drink destination. Me and my brother from another mother get to the bar early. It’s kinda empty. We both grab seats by the bar and I zero in on the bottles. Whiskeys, Gins, Scotches and of course, Rye. So I grab the bartender and tell him I never had Rye before. I’d like to taste the spirit and decide what I like. The bartender was cool has hell! He starts telling me the history of spirit. He said my first drink should be a Rye Old Fashioned. «with the cherry in it??» (Don Draper just slapped me) I get it. I just get it. Its not a sweet cocktail. I thought Rye would be like a smooth Vodka(It isn’t) It’s not Bourbon smokey smooth but its a smooth spirit that I likey. So, I had my drink and now I wanna snap back to what I know, I see a bacon drink, a cocktail with Chill, the bartender says, your at a whiskey bar. trust me. Your next drink is going to be a Sazerac. It’s also made with Absinthe Absinthe, did that make people go friggin crazy 100 years ago? haha Sazerac — another Barley & Grain cocktail that’s a home run hit out of the park It’s Thursday night, I turn about and the place is packed? Very nice B&G Find this place, it’s a Cosmo free zone
