I am so excited that this neighborhood branch of NOPL is re-opening on Saturday(7−13−13). This is one of the surviving Carnegie Libraries in New Orleans and was built in 1907. It’s a great building with a small collection but all the amenities one could want in a neighborhood library. This library survived Katrina with only minor roof damage and was back up and running in October 2005. Unfortunately, it was closed because of structural issues in May 2008BUT the building was used for various tv & film projects even while closed. Hmmmm… Having been to their temporary digs(the old carriage house for the Algiers Courthouse), I’m sure both staff and users will be happy to return home.

This is the Cita Dennis Hubbell Branch of the New Orleans Public Library. The permanent building on Pelican Avenue is closed for major repairs, so the library is temporarily housed at the Morgan Street address. Only a small part of the collection has been moved into the temporary location, but of course you can request any item from NOPL. They also have laptop computers available, and of course Internet access. Small though it may be, Hubbell is(as of this writing) the major library branch for New Orleans’ west bank — the larger Algiers Regional Branch having been clobbered by Hurricane Katrina.
