Barts is another homeade ice cream place that are all over New England. The ice cream is nice expecially after a nice meal at one of the many restuarants in Amherst and it is a favorite of the college kids in Amherst. The décor has recently changed. It went froma down-to-earth grassroots, slightly indie ice cream place with fliwers near the door to a place completely drenched in bright pink and neon green giving it a feeling of kitsch. It is true, this place must have an inferior complex with Herells because Herell’s is superior. However it is a pleasent place. I reccomend the choclate chunk with raspberry drizzle.

My favorite flavor is chocolate chunk with raspberry swirl. And I just found a new flavor to love: Three Geeks & a Redhead(coconut ice cream, brownie chunks, chocolate chunks, and raspberry swirl). YUUUUMMM! You can buy pints at Hager’s Farm Stand on Rte. 2 near Shelburne Center, just fyi.

I have to agree, Herrell’s is probably the best in the valley. But this is a good second choice if you don’t feel like driving to Northampton. my recommendation: get the chocolate chip cookie cup, warmed, with vanilla ice cream. take it outside to the patio area and watch the people go by, and laugh when people attempt to parallel park on the street in front.

Yes, it’s good ice cream, but, let’s get real… It’s no Herrell’s. In any other area, this would easily command 5 stars, but when you weigh it next to Herrell’s… well, there’s just no comparison. They do have very creative flavors. I, too, worked here for a brief stint. We used to call the«chunky chocolate with raspberry sauce»(or something like that — can’t recall the exact name) the«nosebleed» because, after a shift of scooping ice cream, you’d have this streak of red down your forearm from the raspberry sauce rubbing off on it while you scooped. It was, however, one of their best flavors.

Bart’s is closed in Northampton, but not in Amherst! Delicious, but Herrell’s is hogging the spot in my heart for ice cream.
