To Karen T. Too bad you feel the way that you do about this landmark. It makes me sad to think that you had a bad experience here. My grandmother(from that area) used to go there all the time and I remember the breads being fresh, doughy, tasty, hot, true to the flavors of what they stuffed the breads with, without any fluff or extra fancy ingredients and it was awesome. This place comes from the tradition that less is more and they also hailed from the depression era, right after when many Italians migrated to the east coast circa the 1890’s and beyond. These hard working people started their own business, working hard to make a difference and provide for their families here. New Haven was a place many Italian’s called home and they made a huge impact on the economy and the food«scene». About your comment about it being in the middle of nowhere. I just want you to know that the whole area is known as THEHILLSECTION. It’s the old«guinea green» or at least that is what my grandmother and her fellow Italian’s used to jokingly call it. Back in the 1920’s-30’s 40’s, 50’s and even the 1960’s that area took in a very large Italian population. It was a place of much pride and delicious food; that bakery included. Unfortunately although they can change their location, they may not want to. They are being swallowed up by big business and other buildings and the neighborhoods vibe has changed dramatically over the past 30 years and not necessarily for the better. Give them some slack. Maybe it seems like it’s in the middle of nowhere and maybe the guy had a shitty attitude that day(most likely because the whole area has become quite seedy and is in disrepair as of late. This must make them a bit sad and aggravated, but, like many people that moved to this area(which WAS beautiful back in the day)-they probably have so much pride that they don’t want to budge. It means something to them and they have such a long line of history there and quite a good reputation to boot, so I can only imagine their frustration when they see the whole neighborhood going to shi* —This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t go give it another try and try to understand that there is nothing fancy about it… it’s just beautiful bread cooked with love and it’s simple and is tradition. If you want a BEYOND Fresh French Baguette, then got to FRANCE!(just kidding) – no seriously… if you want something baked right then, then asked them to make you a fresh one. I bet they would do it!!! There definitely isn’t an excuse for rude behavior, and I am not apologizing for this guy, but I guess that is all relative. HA…I’m Italian… these days people are so sensitive about every little thing that people say — –Parents coddle their children and let them get away with anything and back in the day(and this is just an example of the Down to Earth and no bullshit approach to EVERYTHING that at least I experienced as a person growing up in New Haven and in an Italian family) — WEDON’T SUGARCOATANYTHING and sometimes, just sometimes, it’s OK !! Let the guy be human, have a shitty day… and maybe if he gives you attitude, just throw him some love and it will come back to you too! I promise. For the sake of this crap ass economy, go ahead and give them another chance. Go there and tell the person behind the counter how grateful you are to be there, to be able to have such lovely bread, and that you heard so many wonderful things about them and then tell me how the bread tastes. ;-) Let’s all support each other. Our economy does depend on it…

Can always smell the fresh bread all day long, and it tastes as good as it smells. At noon on weekdays they sell personal pizzas hot out of the oven that are awesome. Great bakery.

This place is a gem! Their bread and rolls are always extremely fresh. Everything is baked right there. You can even see some of the hot baking action when you’re standing at the counter. The stuffed breads are amazing — I am a huge fan of the pepperoni and mozz! The little pizzas are very tasty and make for a nice lunch. And the cookies are a happy ending to any meal. Seriously, check this place out. Once you do you’ll kick your own ass for not discovering them sooner.

Stopped by to visit my wife at The Anlyan Center up the street on my lunch break, and realized I wouldn’t have time to venture far for lunch. Figuring I was parked right in front Lupi Legna, I decided to stop in. The storefront, as mentioned by other reviewers, is a small, quaint area, from which you can see the rest of the bakery and experience some great aromas. I picked out a small personal pizza and two chocolate chip cookies, and headed out on my way. There was a pretty wide selection of brad of all types, rolls, and other items. The pizza is good, but dont expect much for $ 2.25(Spinach and cheese). It’s more like a foccacia, with a think doughy crust, light on sauce and toppings. It must have been sitting for a while, but it was still tender and tasted good enough. It’s about 6−7″ in diameter and best for a quick grab and go. The cookies, surprisingly, are almost the same size. They have a very homemade texture to them, and are very gooey — tons of chocolate and doughiness too. However, I would never get more than one again, as it is just so rich. All in all, it’s a quaint small bakery with good breads, great cookies and conveinient little pizzas… for $ 4, I definately got my money’s worth.

I went here on a Saturday morning on a recommendation posted here at Unilocal, and only now do I notice that this one review was written 2 years ago. That’ll teach me. This tiny little storefront is the the middle of nowhere near the hospital. It is primarily a bread factory that distributes to local grocery stores, including Stop n Shop. Upon that piece of information, I knew I was unlikely to be impressed by their bread, and I was right. We got a decidedly mediocre seeded french baguette. Even my fiancé who is a bread fanatic, only took a few bites and then forgot about it. Now it’s the next day and fit only for french toast or croutons. Whatever. I saw no sign of sfogliatelle and only a handwritten sign mentioning a couple flavors of stuffed breads, which didn’t engender confidence in my palate, so I passed. Would probably not go back here again. But if you have a need for day old bread, they do still have that for 75 cents a loaf.

Sometimes I like to walk by, just to take in the beautiful aroma of their bread baking. It’s an amazing olfactory experience. And on special days, I actually walk in and make a purchase. I very often buy their day old breads(you can’t go wrong with 50cent bread!) for bread pudding. Their fresh bread is… well, it’s quite fresh, as it is made in the back of the storefront area. They also sell stuffed breads and pizzas, although I have tried neither. But I have had the pleasure of tasting their pastries — they sell chocolate chunk cookies and something I could probably never spell or say correctly. The cookie is great. It’s small-ish, but it’s got a lot of goodness packed in and has this distinct«homemade» taste, and Packed with chocolate chunks. The other is a pastry with a flaky/crunchy crust, filled with ricotta cheese and fruit zest and it is the best thing EVER! It is so rich and filling and satisfying. It is my Friday afternoon treat very often. AND! Everything is quite economical, and there’s a great homey feel to the place. Go and check it out, and I’m almost sure you will leave happy and starch-filled.
