I went to Capture for my first foray in color. I had read previous reviews and noted the salon’s hit or miss tendencies with certain stylists in terms of balayage and ombré. Luckily I wasn’t planning on anything that intricate. I walked in and was able to make an appointment for later in the day. The salon itself is charming. They offer the standard tea and have a variety of magazines to keep you entertained. I asked several of the stylists about color, wanting to get my hair tinted a shade of deep red. The process took a few hours, and the salon was mostly empty during that time. I chit chatted with the women who worked there. Everyone was friendly and upbeat. I wasn’t wow’d by my hair, but I did overall enjoy my experience and have no complaints. I don’t think I quite understood the concept of a tint – just how subtle it would be, over my very dark hair. Maybe I’m lacking in common sense, or perhaps they wanted to err on the side of being conservative. Sadly, I don’t think coming back is in my budget.

I got my hair cut at Capture 3 months ago and it was the worst hair experience that I have ever had. Not only was it the most I have ever paid for a haircut, but it was executed poorly. First of all, the haircuts are overpriced for what you get. My stylist barely washed my hair and didn’t give me a scalp massage. In the past I have paid less than half the price for a haircut and received a scalp massage. The cut itself, I thought, was ok, but then when I got my haircut from my normal stylist in California today she said«WTF did the last girl do to your hair…» Enough said. When she styled my hair she also used excess product and made my hair look so greasy like I hadn’t showered in weeks. I immediately went home and showered because it looked so bad. I say run far, far away from this place and never look back. Save your money and go anywhere else. Worst. Haircut. EVER.

Completely amazed by the beauty and cleanliness of this salon! Was coming in from out of town for a wedding and needed a last minute place for hair and nails for my daughters and myself. This place quickly helped me with an appointment and when we came in we were greeted by a pleasant young lady in their beautiful establishment. They offered us coffee and water. We were seen quickly and everyone was so kind and helpful!

I’ve been coming here for several years, following Victoria going on 9 years now! Always a friendly welcome. Parking is paid for. Tea, coffee, and something sweet available to help you relax. Not much more to say other than if you’re looking for a full service salon, including massage and facials, it doesn’t get much better or nicer than this.

I moved from out of state and had been reading through Unilocal reviews in search of a new hair salon. As my first two choices of hair salons were booked out for weeks in advance, I made an appointment with Vanessa at Capture Salon, and came in for a haircut. After what must have been the fastest haircut since my middle school haircuts at SuperCuts and the equivalent, I was extremely disappointed to find that my haircut was not only executed poorly, but did not even follow the requests and specifications I had made prior to the start of the cut. The hairdresser(Vanessa) was nice enough, but seemed very distracted and not attentive to cutting and styling my hair during the appointment. I have long, thick, glossy hair and had been going to the same two hair stylists in Boston for years with little variation in my haircut. I was very specific about what I wanted done with my hair but instead of giving me the haircut I wanted, the hairdresser tried to convince me that the haircut I had gotten for years wouldn’t work with my hair type, and she took it upon herself to alter my hair style to give me a more standard, boring look rather than the sophisticated haircut I had previously gotten for years — one I had loved with lots of layers, angles, and elegance. I explained in very explicit terms the haircut I wanted — layers to give my hair bounce, angles to frame my face, long bangs I could sweep to the side, and a V-cut in the back. I haven’t been more disappointed with a haircut in years. My layers were uneven to the point where there were parts sticking out at the ends that I had to trim with scissors myself at home, I was given very few layers and angles, and I definitely had a straight line of hair instead of a V-cut in the back. Not being one to spend this much money on a haircut without at least somewhat satisfactory results, I had asked for reshaping several times at the end of the haircut prior to walking out of the salon, but because my hair had been blow dried and curled at the ends with a round brush, I couldn’t tell that the layers were uneven and the other issues with the haircut until the following day after I had showered. I usually walk out of a haircut in love with the new bounce, definition, and style that my hair has afterwards. I was so disappointed after this haircut! My hair is one of my best features, and I usually get tons of compliments after a haircut, but my coworkers who had been praising my hair even *before* my haircut noticeably stopped commenting on my hair after it was cut to a very generic, nondescript, and non-flattering style. For such a premium price tag in New Haven, I would have expected far superior results. An ok place to go if you want a borderline standard haircut for a substantial price tag(you’d pay less at other salons for comparable results) but certainly not the place to go for a more sophisticated haircut that demands both skill and attention. Needless to say, the costly haircut fell far short of my expectations, and I will certainly not be returning to this salon. I’m planning a trip up to Boston within the next week to salvage my hair and restyle it in a way that looks elegant and flattering, because ultimately eating the cost of a second haircut will be less painful than having to live with this hair for the next several months.

My daughters and I have been customers of Alex’s for years. She has cut, colored and styled the three of us to our great satisfaction every time. I always tell her that her haircuts grow out so beautifully that they just flow into another style that I end up loving. Both of my daughters have been through many shades of color and each one has been beautiful and natural looking. Her creativity and talent are what keep us coming back time after time. The atmosphere at Capture Salon is so calm and welcoming and her staff is very friendly. The salon is easy to get to and the parking lot across the street is very convenient.

I had my hair and makeup done, the hair looks great make up just ok. My false lashes were coming off after a few minutes and for some reason the lashes are not the same length. My eyes look pretty different from one another. For the price I paid I wish I was happier with the results.

I love coming here. Liz gives beautiful manicures and is relaxed, kind, and helpful. She also gives me the perfect kind of eyebrow wax and wonderful facials. The ambiance is great and the staff are lovely.

I want to prefix this review by saying this will be my first and only review on Unilocal. The only reason I am writing this post is to warn people away from capture salon. I am new to the area and thought it would be fun to lighten my hair for the spring. I had previously gone to Ann for a hair cut and she had done an okay job so I thought I try her out. Without a doubt that was the biggest hair mistake I had ever made. I had not colored my hair in over 9 months because I had let in gracefully grow out from my previous balayage. The stylist, Ann, did not have a clue how to properly color in balayage or ombré, as she had claimed. My hair looked like a half blonde, half brunette disaster. I had streaks and slippage all throughout my hair. In several different spots you could see the straight line across where the foil laid. I have never been one to cause a scene in a public place, so I paid and left a graceful tip. I hoped to go home and allow my new hair to grow on me. Unfortunately, that was not the case. I had my hair done on Friday evening and by Sunday morning I could not bare to look at myself in the mirror. I had to attempt to get a refund and find someone who could properly fix this mess. I took a lot of pictures and decided to call the owner Alex on Monday to complain and ask for my $ 155+ back. She would not take or return my calls. As the receptionist stated it is their policy that they do not provide refunds they only«rectify» situations. Being exhausted and frustrated with the situation I decided to stop by Capture salon and show them the damage in person. Alex the owner was not in but Ann the stylist was. I showed her the pictures of her terrible work and she had no explanation or resolution. She would not even allow me to take my hair out of my pony tail to show her my hair in person. Ann was some what sympathetic and helpful however the receptionist Lauren was by far the rudest person I have EVER encounter. As I was explaining my situation in a very calm manner, she was condescending and mocking me. When I asked them to take a look at my hair, she told me that I needed to leave or she would call the new haven police. I had to step out of the salon onto the street to show Ann the stylist my hair as I was in tears. I work in corporate business sale and have dealt with my own fair share of angry customers. I am very aware how to hold my cool under extreme pressure. In no way was I disrespectful or causing a scene in the salon. It was 2 pm on a Tuesday and not one customer was present in the salon. I can honestly say I have never been more disrespected in my entire life. I left bawling and feeling so violated by the staff. I would rather allow capture salon to keep all my money than to allow myself to be put back in such a degrading situation. I hope this review prevents any future customers from being taken advantage of by capture salon. I will be taking my pictures and story to the Connecticut board of cosmetology because Alex the owner refuses to take credit for any wrong doing on her staffs behalf.

After receiving an awful haircut at a different salon in the area this summer, I was very cautious and nervous to try a new salon. Long story short, but at the previous salon they cut my bangs SOSHORT and gave me a fringe… when I did not ask for that. After months of growing this awful haircut out, it was time to finally bite the bullet and try to get my hair cut at another salon as my hair was growing long and unruly. I have passed my Capture a few times before and always enjoyed their décor, so I figured I would try them, based off of reviews on Unilocal and esthetics. My stylist today was Hector Cruz and he was GREAT! He took the time the listen my my concerns and made me feel at ease. Not only is Hector a very precise and knowledgable stylist, but he is so kind and friendly too! You can tell that he truly cares about his clients and works hard to achieve great results. Capture Salon is very lucky to have Hector as a member of their team. I left the salon today feeling great and totally happy with my new haircut. Not only are the remnants of my previous style is now gone and just a distant memory, but this new style seems very easy to manage. And my hair looks and feels SO healthy! Prices are slightly higher than other salons in the area, but its totally worth it for the professional experience, especially if you ask for Hector! I’ll be returning to Capture for my next cut and will be sure to refer my friends and coworkers!

This salon is atrocious. I showed up for a 5 pm appointment at 4:55, after waiting 25 minutes I asked the receptionist how much longer the wait would be. Her response? «The other girl before you came in late, so probably another 20 – 30 minutes. The stylist isn’t trying to be late on purpose, it’s just that sometimes people run late.» I responded that in that case, a phone call would have been nice to let me know my stylist was running 50 minutes behind schedule, and the receptionist gave me a look that could kill. She then cranked up the attitude, becoming even more rude, dismissive and obnoxious(which I hadn’t thought possible), and told me again that sometimes people run late and I just need to wait. No, I don’t need to do anything, so I walked out. I have never in my life received worse customer service at a salon, and I have never, ever been told by a salon staff that my appointment was being pushed back by almost an hour because another client failed to get there on time, I will never come back to Capture and I will certainly be letting all of my friends and colleagues know about the experience I had.

Moving to a new state means doing what every woman hates — finding a new salon!(Among other equally annoying things) Nothing is more terrifying than saying goodbye to your trusted specialists, and as a lady who regularly has hot wax applied and then ripped off, I needed to find someone I could trust. However, the bigger problem I quickly found was finding any salon/spa that offered waxing services! At best, they offered it for eyebrows, but after searching I found Capture Salon and booked an appointment within a few days of our move because sadly I desperately needed it. I easily found street parking on their block, and entered into a spacious and well designed salon, immediately being greeted by the receptionist who offered me refreshments as I waited a few minutes for Liz. She was very friendly, and we chatted throughout the appointment, which was less than an hour. Incredibly efficient and fast, and at a great price(after paying Philly/NYC prices for years). Now that I have her card and hours, I’ll be a regular client!

OMG terrifying experience a few months ago. Victoria did a horrible haircut that made my hair unmanageable. She also did my eyebrows and I had NO eyebrows after the wax. I’m not sure if it was just that she was in a hurry because I had arrived a little bit late to my appointment and she had her last client of the day after me. She had a great, spunky personality and I really wanted to like my haircut and Capture as there are very few options in New Haven. I had a flight the next day so I had to travel with my wild hair and hairless brows to a wedding.

I usually have the worst luck with hair salons. My little sister got a haircut a couple of months ago from Vanessa and I was super impressed. When it came down to cutting my thick long hair, I chose to come here. It’s in a really cool building on Crown Street and there is parking across the street which is extremely convenient. Vanessa cut my hair and she even curled it after blow drying it per my request. The staff is laid-back but super friendly and personable and ACTUALLYLISTENTOYOUWHENYOUTELLTHEMWHATYOUWANT. I’m really happy I found this place!

The good: Pretty place, nice staff. I really wanted to like it. The bad: Waited for my esthetician for over 20 minutes. Wasn’t even offered to reschedule, just an apology(it wasn’t the desk gal’s fault). Super unimpressed. Won’t be coming back.

I have been a client of Anne for over 10 years and she is by far one of the most talented hair stylists around. Capture offers its clients a comfortable atmosphere with plenty of space to relax and have an enjoyable experience. They offer a wide range of services that you can select from. All of the staff here are very talented and friendly. Once you come here you will be hooked. They are centrally located on Crown Street right downtown. Stop in say hi and make an appointment!

Anne did a fabulous job on my hair. I came in to get my hair blown out for an interview, and she made me look and feel great. Anne and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. The salon itself is immaculate and state of the art. I love the downtown location. I will definitely return and tell my friends and family about Capture.

Awesome. Jenna V. is a goddess among stylists. Every haircut she’s ever given me has made me feel like a million bucks. I have raved about her so much – and let’s face it, she makes me look good, so the visual evidence backs up my claims – that even my boyfriend made an appointment with her. He’s extremely handsome to begin with(if I may say so myself), but he sent me a post-haircut picture, and MYWORD. Fellas with long, textured, or otherwise unruly hair, this woman is the patron saint of sexy haircuts. As for the salon as a whole, I enthusiastically recommend the staff and the service. It’s inside the former New Haven Water Company building, which has been dramatically renovated to feature airy, light-filled spaces and elegant décor. The employee break room is inside the building’s old safe, which makes it look like you could accidentally lock yourself inside Fort Knox if you worked there.

This place is gorgeous! They opened recently but did a bang up job fixing up the place. First class! I went around 5pm on a Thursday and parking wasn’t too bad. That’s the only negative I found, if you consider that a negative — limited parking. I walked in with extra-long scraggily hair. I had serious split ends going on. Between school and work I hadn’t had a haircut in over 2 years. I was nervous to lose length but I also knew it would just get worse if I didn’t get all the split ends off now(some split almost halfway up the shaft)! Hector Cruz confirmed this for me and made me feel comfortable with it. He did a FANTASTIC job. My hair went from long, thick, wavy, frizzy and split to medium-long and totally healthy. He used a PH balancer which did wonders. Is this an upscale place? Totally. But you get what you pay for and honestly, I thought it was a great value(that’s coming from a girl who has gone to SuperCuts all her life). Everyone was super friendly and I felt really comfortable, which was surprising because I usually feel out of place in upscale places. Bonus: Hector works with cancer patients! That was really awesome to me. I want to grow out my hair to donate to Pantene Beautiful Lengths now! If you want to support a great cause like that this is totally the place to go. I know this probably sounded like an advertisement(I swear it’s not — I’m a teacher, haha) but I will definitely be going here from now on(and more often than once every 2 years)!
