I come up every month to go to Scott’s flat lake, and this is the place in town to stop, locals playing liars dice, always the same bartenderess, sometimes they have live music, and crazy dance party’s. it is an essential stop while visiting. one of the cleaner places in town, unless you want to go swat flies at the other bar across the road, where they literally supply you with fly swatters…

I am a Nevada City local. This is the last place I ever choose to go in if I want to go out and have a drink downtown. To their credit, I will say that this place really does have two faces. If you go during the daytime and/or on a weekday, it isn’t all that bad and tends to be fairly pleasant, clean, and not overly loud or crowded. The people who work here have always been nice to me. However, if you go on a weekend evening, it’s completely different and turns into a club atmosphere and a loud rowdy meat market; expect to pay a cover charge to get in, only to be crowded in like sardines amongst dozens of people who have to shout at eachother in a vain attempt to have a conversation over the extremely loud DJ music. The bar, floor, and everywhere else gets sloppy with spilled drinks and you will have to wait longer than normal to be waited on, even with several bartenders working. Good luck finding a seat. It’s always been amazing to me that despite this place being right next door to city hall, there’s always someone drunk and stupid enough to get into a fight here, with cops literally waiting right outside for it to happen. I prefer to stay out of trouble and go elsewhere.

Never busy, VERY expensive drinks and all the dj’s play nothing but out of style music and rap. Shady looking people all over. No wonder no one goes there anymore Go somewhere else!

McGee’s is an ever changing atmosphere dependent on the time of day or night. Great place for an afternoon/early evening drink with friends for a quite sit down chat. After 10PM it becomes filled with the latest music, dancing, and young crowd enjoying the night life. If you are over 30… stay home after 10PM. If you must come out, stay away from McGee’s unless you feel you can keep up with the 20 somethings.

We were in Nevada City for a wedding, and my husband and I wanted to go out for a drink the night before. After wandering around and popping into a few places, we found Mc Gees. Blasting an awesome mix of music, and finding the had the Giants game on, we were here to stay. Really nice older bartender. Decent drink prices. Great DJ. We even met a really nice local/ex-employee who bought us a round.(This all goes a long way for me, considering that I bartender in a nightclub, and am particular) Next time we are up in Nevada City, we will be back here!

Average price drinks, mix crowd and decent bartenders. Some live music, pool tables, good amount of seating, decent selection of beers & liquor… night time music a little loud for conversations.

It’s one thing to wait for a drink when it’s busy but when the bartender is just talking to her friend, not ok. I waited 5 minutes then left.

McGee’s is working super hard on keeping live music in Nevada County. The live Jazz on Sundays in the afternoons has been amazing. I’ve been down there a lot lately and it is almost always hopping with either Rock and Roll for dancing or some great jazz jam. They do have DJs on Friday and Saturdays late night. But this week The Soft Bombs, local hard rock band, will be playing on Saturday night starting at 9:30. Last time they played they packed it… The cocktails there are made to perfection, and affordable. Seems like it is the only place to be. McGees «s

I’m giving the place 2 Stars with an asterisk: If you live here and don’t ever travel off the hill, you’ve only got a few options so if you apply the«Nevada City Handicap» to McGee’s, I guess it would get«Four Stars». On weekends, McGee’s can get crazy-packed with both locals & tourists, not necessarily a bad thing, however that can mean waiting a hell of long time to get a drink. Depending on the DJ, it can be hit & miss, the music sometimes gets cranked to where no one can hear you talk, i.e. your drink order, etc. You’ll see all walks of life there including the four C’s of Nevada County(Cougars, Clampers, Cannabis & Cops) so I don’t think dress code has ever been an issue. There’s a cover charge because your other choices are Coopers or the Mine Shaft.

um, no. Avoid like herpes. I RARELY talk trash about a bar, but wow, not a place to go if you are looking for a GOOD time. you are better off driving to ANY place within 50 miles.

I came here while I was in town over the Thanksgiving break. Not having any Nevada County bar experience under my belt yet I thought I would give it a try. It was completely the local college kids, home for a visit. For me, that was perfect and felt like a high school reunion. Bar was packed but the bartenders were friendly. Dance floor was a little sad, not too many partaking in the booty shaking but it was fun none the less. They were charging a cover, pretty ridiculous but I didn’t have to pay it after sweet talking the bouncer. Overall it was a good night but I based that on the fact that I knew half of everyone there.

McGee’s is a fun bar to go to. They have a small dance area and have a DJ playing all of today’s hits. The back of the bar has a pool table and smoking area. The bartenders take care of you and make your drinks well and strong. I wouldn’t suggest going here if you want to catch up with an old friend because it’s loud in here. There is usually some sort of drama here on the weekends. fights and stuff, but nothing too serious(that i have seen, plus i think that stuff happens in most bars). Mostly just drunk 20 something year old guys, having too much beer and thinking nothing can touch them. It’s really entertaining actually. This is usually the bar i go to in NC if I go out, which isn’t too often.

Having a prior positive experience, I was looking forward to a return visit. Captain Colander and I popped in on a Saturday night. BIG mistake! YUCK! Being completely accosted at the door by very loud and crappy music and a sea of poorly dressed hoochie-hill-girls, I should have ran immediately. Unfortunately, I’m a tad on the stubborn side so I blew some money, and some sanity and stayed for one drink. Poor decision. Needless to say, a swift escape was made out the back door after promptly downing my vodka. In short, I think that I would come back to McGees but only before 2 p.m. and probably only on a weekday. Much after that, and things could get a little dicey.

This place is always super crowded, which is good when you know some of the people there, but not so much when you don’t know any of the people. Every time I’ve been there, the music is super loud — I can barely hear the people I’m with. We always end up going to the back just so we can talk. But the back is so small that I always feel like I’m in the way. The bartenders are attentive and very nice. Over last year’s Thanksgiving weekend, I was charged cover. But this last Saturday, I was not charged a cover. So, I’m not sure what determines the cover charge. The prices aren’t bad, and they make their drinks STRONG! The door to the back patio is left open, so it usually kind of smokey in the back area of the bar.

Beautiful bar with serious goldrush charm. The bartender was really great and they had Powers Irish Whiskey
