Old charm but very dirty. I guess it’s haunted too because I heard my neighbor complain to housekeeping during the evening thru the thin walls. However, I did not have an experience or was looking for one. Dust on the toilet, sticky floors in the bathroom and housekeeping leaving a dirty folded envelope with housekeeping miss spelled asking for a tip. Here’s my tip clean the rooms better and don’t leave an a dirty folded envelope with housekeeping miss spelled asking for a tip. Spend five cents and put out a new envelope. I’ve been in the business. Upon check in the lady was very nice and gave great tips, the only reason for two stars. Check out I was barely acknowledged or was asked about my stay. It was not cheap to stay here. I will not go back. I did not eat there.

This place has horrible food I ordered a steak medium rare and it was very well done and then some, it was like trying to chew a boot. I couldn’t eat any of the entrée for it was all over cooked. As if it were cooked a few hrs before and sat under a heat lamp until someone ordered that plate. The salad was very weak and wilted(not fresh). Good thing the whisky was ok. If you plan on eating here save yourself the the trouble and don’t. I’m sorry for this review I hope it’s taken as a wake up call to make the changes so it can be a nice dinning experience in the future.

I ate at the restaurant/bar today and had horrible service. I’ve eaten there once before and was quite happy with the service and the food but today was just awful. Our server took our order and gave us our food but after that we didn’t see her again. I had to ask for a refill on my water and had to ask for the bill. I ordered Bleu Cheese Biscuit Whole: Large house made honey biscuit topped with our garlic bleu cheese spread and baked to golden brown — – the biscuit was 100% cold and hard and was not recent baked to a golden brown which the description makes you assume it will be hot and warm — – 3G Macaroni and Cheese: An amazing blend of Guinness, Gouda, and gorgonzola cheese with a hint of brown sugar topped with a grilled chicken breast — – the flavor was delicious and what I wanted but it has chunks of onion or so I thought in it. I asked the server for a refund as I I you had a few bites and couldn’t eat it because of the chunks of possible onions. She asked the cooks and they said it has shallots and garlic in it which aren’t shallots a type of onion? She gave me 25% off the meal Which was $ 10 instead of $ 15 for the macaroni that I didn’t even eat. — – I was really disappointed in the food quality and the service and definitely will not be eating there ever again. Had I not had to pay for the macaroni that I didn’t eat because the description did not state the items that were in the dish, I would maybe give them another chance. But a cold biscuit and a dish with unexpected ingredients in it and having to pay almost full price really wasn’t a great experience.

We had a wonderful party there for my stepfather, in the banquet room, for 33 people. The room was set up nicely, there was plenty of room for the little children to play, the food was excellent, the service personnel were friendly, and things happened at the times requested. The hotel is set up amazingly well for such a party, with the food choices clear and plentiful. the prices were low-to-moderate. All my e-mails with the hotel manager, Dennae Cromer, were so pleasant as well as timely. She accommodated every wish I had.

Unfortunately the hotel reviews are mixed in with the bar(aka the Golden Gate Saloon.) I haven’t stayed at the hotel so I can’t rate it, but the bar is great! Awesome food, friendly and attentive staff, and nice ambiance. Definitely a place I will return to.

Wandering down the street and looking for a quick bite… WOW! Best cheesesteak I ever had! Don’t even look at the rest of the menu! Tender and flavorful tri-tip, grilled onions and mushrooms, avocado with a huge side of real homemade fries. All this in an historic bar with friendly staff where you can sit as long as you want watching big-screen sports or the passing parade on the street. In fact, I’m hitting the shops while my honey stays for the beer and football. Worth the stop.

Just don’t expect a fantastic night. Or lunch. Or to-go order. I’ve given them multiple tries. I like the menu. Heck! I like the menu online, they just don’t «follow» the online menu. And they don’t update their staff on that. So you order, and then they call you back to let you know they don’t serve that item. Let’s just cut the %^*% place has good food. Cool ambiance. Lots of regulars. But they need a manager, or system. Cause it has potential. I wish I could give them more stars. But it’s an ordeal. Not worth the wait.

The ambiance is wonderful, beautiful old ghost ridden hotel. The food and service is less than desired. Bartenders, especially one named Monty, rude, anti-social, another bartender, heavy-set, don’t get served by her– she only has her favorites. EXPECT, at shift changes-even if your eating– they want you to PAYUP? The best part of HOLBROOKE is ambiance and music! That’s ALL he wrote…

If you’re wanting a super cute experience with lots of photo opps, com here! The continental breakfast is totally ok. We’re super low maintenance, so cereal, toaster with bagels/English muffins, cream cheese, butter, jelly, fresh cut fruit, cottage cheese, super good waffle batter, coffee, oj… And free makes us way happy! And a bar in the hotel at night! There are so many private areas for multiple parties. It’s just really cool The carpets are really yucky(black feet and knees from my little one crawling) and spider webs in and around the inside of the wonder are the only reasons I don’t give them 5 stars. Will we stay there again? Probably. But I would at least once if you get a chance.

This place has mixed reviews so I need to let people know this a bar connected to a hotel serving bar food. On a Thursday night for dinner it seems like a 55+ crowd. That being said their burgers are cooked to order and mine was perfect. Served with a nice portion of thick cut fries. Everything was hot and I will back for another burger when I get the craving. Service was fine and there is a full bar.

We were going to a concert at the Center for the Arts and decided to stay at the Holbrooke for the adventure. It’s an old hotel, not a bed and breakfast, and people who are expecting the bed and breakfast experience may not be happy here. We were expecting an old hotel, so were happy with the accommodations. Our room was small, but had all the basics, as well as an old-fashioned bathroom with a claw foot tub. The staff was wonderful – everyone was pleasant and helpful. Unfortunately we had no visitation, but that’s not the fault of the staff. I have one criticism, though, and dinged the Holbrooke an entire star for it. A hotel should have at least one accessible bathroom, and a claw foot tub is very difficult for someone with severe arthritis. The only room with a shower is in the back building, and up a short flight of stairs – not good for someone who can’t climb stairs. We ate in the room off the bar, as a local Celtic music group was playing there. Taking the advice of others we had a hamburger, and it was quite good. We also discovered that, although it didn’t matter in January, that some of the rooms have verandas, which would be very pleasant in the spring and fall.

Average drinks with average bartenders. I took myself on a tour and acted plum surprised when people told me to get out of areas I was in. It is actually confusing where you can and can’t go. Maybe not to non nosey people. We ordered soup and salad at the bar. Bartender warned 30+ minutes but figured that was for entrees. Soup you have fraking made?! C’mon! Speaking of soup, once we got it, pretty ok French Onion. We asked for a bowl, got a cup. Charged me for a bowl. Had to ask for bread. Maybe that’s a bowl? The cheese was presented on top as a slice, not melted in. Dissapointing. The salad was so fresh though and large! Great tomatoes! I’m going to give it 2 ½ which translates to 3 because I didnt order a «real meal» nor stay here.

Really? The WORST New Year’s Eve ever. We really wanted to stay at the historic Holbrooke for it’s charm. We lucked out with a last minute cancellation and were very excited for New Year’s! Unfortunately, after food and drinks, we being forty-something’s retired early to our room around 10pm. About 2am we awoke to violent pounding on our door, to open it to several cops with guns out. Apparently, some employee(really!) of the hotel reported a man with a knife on our floor near our room. They handcuffed me(naked), searched our room, and of course found nothing besides two naked sleepy people in shock. Now, I understand that this is not a hotel service issue, but once the officers left, we packed up and left as well. On the way out, my wife and I told the front desk that our night was ruined, and we expected a full refund. He said the owner had just left and couldn’t be reached(REALLY?) but he had said we could have half off(ummm, no). Even today, we have had no phone call, apology, or anything. We called, and were told again that the owner was unavailable. I will say the room was clean, drinks and historic saloon were cool, but for an owner to not address such an event is unconscionable. Not to mention the ridiculous performance of the Grass Valley«Keysone Cops» who clearly mishandled and misread the whole scenario. I guess they have little experience and not enough to do besides busting stoners from time to time. My recommendation is to stay far, far away from this hotel, this town, and these people who have no sense of appropriateness or follow through with innocent patrons. What happened to the reckless employee who reported the ostensible«guy with a knife near room 11»? Who knows???

No heat. No hangers Poor service. If you are in the mood for camping. This may be the place. You have to call down to the desk to have the heat up or down No room controls. They get there when they can. Pot smoker paradise. Whether in the parking Lott or room. Staff on a scale of 1 to 10. Solid 5. Back building is a well kept flop house.

Fun experience. If you were like me as a child and scarred by the movie/book«The Shining», vintage hotels really freak you out. I am a grown-ass man and the history and atmosphere of the Holbrooke had me looking over my shoulder and on edge at night. I was sure I was going to see or feel an apparition. I haven’t read anything about the hotel being haunted, but by God if there ever was a hotel that feels like it should be haunted, this one is it. The room itself was nice, with quaint old-world fixtures. The small, divided room layout only added to the spookiness. My only complaint is that the air conditioning needs to be fixed(at least when we stayed here last year). We complained about the air, and the staff was very nice and tried to adjust the A/C, but to no avail. Trying to cool down the second story of a hotel hailing from Civil War times is probably an exercise in futility. It was just hot enough to be uncomfortable trying to sleep. So we opened up the windows and something flew in at night and bit me a few times on the chest(likely a mosquito). Otherwise, neat place to stay.

Where to begin? My sister and I checked in with plans to stay for about a week. We were in town to spend time with our father who was ill. While checking in at the front desk, the manager overheard us talking about our dad and expressed genuine compassion and concern. He was kind and welcoming with just the right amount of humor to make us smile. He was careful to make sure we got the room we wanted and that our needs were met. The room was perfect. After we settled in, we went to the bar for dinner. The appetizers were fantastic. The prosciutto wrapped prawns were perfect, and the crab cakes? Way more crab than cake, they were amazing. My sister ordered marsala with pork instead of chicken and I ordered the rib-eye. Her dish was excellent but mine was, unfortunately, way overcooked. When I told our server, she was extremely apologetic and took the meal off of our bill. She offered to have the steak re-made but we had to go. I understand these things happen and they handled it very well which makes all the difference in the world. Later that night, we returned for dessert and a nightcap. We were ready to leave when the bartender asked us to stay for a few more minutes as the chef was preparing something for us. One more round of port and several minutes later, the chef handed the bartender an envelope, which she handed to me. It was a note with an apology for the overcooked steak and a gift certificate for the amount of the steak. Not even a little necessary, but it was greatly appreciated. But wait, there’s more. A couple nights later, we returned from visiting our father and sat out on the patio for some drinks, fresh air, and conversation. It was late and we were hungry. I asked Ty if any place was open for food and he informed me that Safeway was the only place to get anything to eat at that hour. No problem, we weren’t starving. Ty then asked what we wanted to eat and I told him just some soup or appetizers or something. Five minutes later, he shows up with two bowls of soup for us. That guy just rocks. While I certainly don’t expect such treatment upon each visit to the Holbrooke(frankly, no one should) the staff went so above and beyond during our stay, knowing that we were going through a very difficult time, I couldn’t be more grateful for their amazing hospitality. We needed that. Generally speaking, the bar is great, the service is great, it’s lively, local, and an all-around good place. I can’t imaging staying anywhere else when in Grass Valley. Thank you to everyone at the Holbrooke.

I have heard so many mixed reviews about this place that it has taken me over 2 years to try it out! I also watched the episode of Hotel Impossible on the Travel Channel. Tonight my husband and I ended up having a kid free night(thank God for grandmas) and so we figured why not give it a shot! When we walked in, we were greeted by the front desk clerk. We arrived after 9 pm so I think the regular hostess was already off. The clerk was very nice. He gave us 4 options of where we could sit, the main dining room, the saloon, the library, or the patio. We decided on the patio. Once seated, we were promptly served water and told that our server, Katie, would be right out to take our drink order. Katie came quickly and took our drink order. I wanted a burger and I noticed that there were no burgers on the dinner menu. I asked Katie if it was possible to get a hamburger and she promptly grabbed a bar menu and said we could order anything off of that menu as well. It was appreciated. Katie then gave us a few minutes to look over the menus. When she returned to take our order, I advised her of my shellfish allergy(a lot of the specials tonight were shellfish). She offered me a different side than the French fries because she said that they were fried in the same fryer as fish. So, I opted for a salad. Our food arrived and looked delicious! The burgers were awesome! They were juicy without being greasy. The meat was seasoned so well! I could literally taste all of the different spices and flavors that were used. It was great. The beef was fresh Angus and the patties were hand formed. Everything was fresh, from the bun, the beef, and the veggies. I have definitely found a new go to place to eat. The ambiance was really nice as well. It would have gotten 5 stars, but I was kinda put off by the owner, Ian. When I watched him on TV, I saw that he can be really rude. Tonight, he was walking into the hotel from the back patio and another patron sitting at another table said hi to him. Ian muttered something under his breath and walked through the door. It was really rude. Then the guy said to his friend that he always treats people that way. It’s very unfortunate that he acts this way. His employees are very welcoming and it would be nice if he was the same way. There were only 4 people out on the patio, he should of acknowledged a customer. Other than that, everything was great! Thank you Katie for being so awesome! You rock!

Date night with my baby while waiting for Marc Broussard playing at the Civic Arts Center within walking distance. My review is strictly from what we experienced today. We ordered the Bruschetta as an appetizer. It was so good we got a second. Shout out for Dominic who cooked our food. Super cool and down to earth. Your Chef who cars about his product. Shout out Regina behind the bar. She was fantastic. Helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. We split the Black & Blue burger. Cooked perfectly. Medium rare and it was actually medium rare. We will be booking a room for Wynton Marsallis next month and this may end up being a 5 star. We watched both episodes of Hotel Impossible. They did not do this place justice. They never even showed the dining area during either episode. See pics below and help keep this place open and thriving. West Roseville will be back in a few weeks to stay.

Stormy and I like this place. We’ve stayed here a number of times. We’ve eaten here many times. We’ve done special events like Thanksgiving dinner(which can really be special if there is snow!) Now our greyhound Stella thinks this place is good too. She got to have lunch with us outside on the back patio and the chefs made here a couple of burger patties just like she likes them. Low key kinda place and welcoming for our grey. Fun.
