I am a Nevada City local. I do not do my shopping downtown, as it is typically very tourist-y and overpriced. I do make exceptions for this store, however. Its a very unique imports store full of interesting trinkets, gifts, clothing, and accessories. The owners support free trade by regularly traveling overseas to buy merchandise directly from the artisans that make some of these items. I can’t even begin to guess how many African baskets I now own thanks to this store. Even if you only have a handful of pocket change, there are still quite a number of inexpensive small items to choose from. It’s impossible for me to go in this shop without buying something. The people who work here have always been very nice to me.

Wow, just… Wow! I did not expect to find a place this cool in such a small town. Handwoven baskets galore and absolutely the most comfortable clothing I have seen in a long, long time. This stuff is certainly sourced from a very unique place. Not sure where, but it feels like some master artisans played a role in the creation of this merchandise. Found just what I was looking for after about two years, a replacement woven tote with quality leather handles and not too big/small. Not very descriptive i know, but like the best things on Earth, you know it when you see it! That pretty much sums up this great little store, you’ll love it when you see it! Be prepared to be happy… very happy.

Ommmmm! Oops! my transcendence is showing. What a great place to explore! Temple bells, Tapestries, Sari’s. You name it they got it! Could that be patchouli I smell? An exotic adventure in an old Sierra mining town. Pull up an elephant footstool sahib and enjoy.

A camping trip would not be complete without«pre-camping» cocktails at the nearest country town and some shopping in their totally cool boutiques! Asylum Down is hands down the coolest shop in Nevada City! They have things you never knew you needed and cannot possibly live without. Well, you could but why would you want to? I am a Siren. Really. At least that is what part of the name of the troupe I bellydance with says. So, when I saw a beautiful mermaid from Indonesia hand crafted out of wood hanging on the wall I could not resist her call — I knew she was coming home with me! They have unique items from most countries imaginable. I like picking up items that make my friends jealous. *wink* I also got some really cool«happy hempsters vegan mandarin orange flavored» chap stick. A girls got to protect her lips in that hot Moonshine sun, right?
