Mixed bag, no pun intended. They charge .50 cent surcharge for credit card purchases under $ 5. This was made legal recently but the stipulation, which I don’t think Music City Candy & Ice Cream meets is «Merchants can only charge so high a fee relative to the average annual cost of transactions.» With it conditional only on certain dollar amounts it seems more geared toward hitting a certain margin which absorbs the fee or encouraging upsells, which is more of what it does. I was in line behind someone last week who’s card didn’t work, then they came back w/cash and I spent 10 minutes while the cashier tried to figure out what to do w/the .50 cent surcharge which was in the system but not collected. This is just one pitfall of why these fees are only used by mom and pops and not professional businesses like WalMart. The better move is to increase your product price to cover the fee. Then once I finally did get up, they don’t have the calculation for the ‘candy by weight’ other than ¼lb, ½lb, 1lb, etc. So if you get anywhere between ¼ and ½ you either add or put back, and it took another 5 minutes for the cashier to adjust the size of my bag. A better option here would be a good old fashion calculator — if a lb is 2.99, then multiply out 2÷3×2.99 to get the actual cost and have Square configured for a variable product cost. Lastly I was also delayed by the SAME associate who had to wait on laundry customers next door. I think the lesson here is it’s a neat shop but not ready to be open for business in the 21st century. It needs adequate staffing, calculators, and the surcharge worked into the actual product cost the way most professional businesses handle it. It must have taken me 30 minutes to get out the door with one bag of candy. They should have planned better, and waited another year until they were ready to hire adequate help, calculate the surcharges, and do math with the calculator.

Am I the only one surprised that there are still candy shops? I honestly had no idea. And at Music City Candy, what you get is exactly as advertised — a shop full of candy. Oh, and ice cream, too! I was a bit let down on my visit here, as we were actively searching for rock candy, and they didn’t have any. But they’ve got just about everything else you could need or want.

Everyone is right — the carrot cake ice cream is to DIE for. I had such a hard time deciding though… I tried half a dozen flavors and they were all delicious. Great service and the price was wonderful: two adult cones and four kiddie cones for $ 12.

If you are craving rich and decadent ice cream… This is the place to go! You can sample all the flavors you want before you decide and I personally recommend the Belgian chocolate and jacked up(Jack Daniels whiskey included in this one). Get the hot caramel topping also! Very very very yummy! And talk about friendly service! Don’t let the bars on the windows scare you away from trying this gem out!

Update after visit #2 for the ice cream…(What? You people thought I was kidding?) I have a new favorite thing in this world. The carrot cake ice cream at Music City Candy. I’m serious. Better than any other ice cream, ever, and just my favoite thing. Where’s Oprah when you need her… because the world needs to know! Original review: Adorable, refreshing, super nice owner. You’ve got to love a lady who has the guts to open an old fashioned penny candy type store on Dickerson Road. Gummi candies galore,(remember the hot dog and hamburger ones? They have a pizza, too!) and so many favorites I hadn’t seen in years. Had to have a $ 100,000 bar and ate it driving back to the office. Remember the hard candy peanut butter bars? And the ooey-gooey caramels that had the white creamy center? Sampled a few ice creams and vowed to return on Friday with a co-worker who has a birthday that day. The owner explained to me and my friend that it’s the most fattening ice cream in Nashville… most are 12% butterfat, and theirs are like 19%. But you can totally taste it, especially in the carrot cake flavor that I intend to get a scoop of on my next visit.(Which will be Friday, in case you were not paying attention). Thrilled to support a locally owned business that is also following its passion… definitely give them a try!

I really wanted to like it. Maybe I should have had a hot dog while I was there. Good selection of candies though nothing too obscure.

I was able to grab a sneak peak of Music City Candy a few days before opening and just let me say, this part of town has never seen anything as special as this when it comes to specialty shops. Hailed as a true«Mom and Pop,» MCC borrows some of yesterday’s small town pharmacy charm and mixes it with today’s candy flavors. From Jelly Bellys to Lollipops to Smokey Mountain Salt Water Taffy, they’ve got almost every sweet tooth covered. You can choose from over 10 flavors of unique ice cream and enjoy in the retro café, complete with checkboard floors. The owner and staff are eager to welcome you and give you the inside scoop. It’s clean as a pin, parking is generous and the building is brand new. In fact, this little strip mall is a success story for the neighborhood. It went from eye sore to beautification candidate. MCC’s theme, «Where You Can Be A Kid Again,» holds true, as I can’t wait for my son to get old enough where we can mix $ 10, 1 hour and a lifetime of memories. Remember, Dickerson’s not what it used to be since the redevelopment happened a few years ago. Come on over and enjoy our neighborhood and support a future local staple!
