Hollywood Disco

Second stop on Dance Recon 2011, the crowd on the dancefloor seemed to be enjoying it, but overall dirty and skanky even for young uns. We did not drink or dance and moved on to our third stop.

The locals told me this was the place to dance and DAMN did I dance!
Hollywood Disco continues to have a reputation of the place you finish the night at. Drinks were reasonably priced, music was good, and there was plenty of room to dance. One hindrance though: they don’t allow drinks on the dance floor. So, dance while drinking off of the dance floor or suck it down fast to get on the dance floor.

Went to a fashion show here. Staff was super rude… Venue was dirty… If anybody asks me about renting this venue for an event I’ll say «absolutely not!» Fashion show was good though… I just wouldn’t have had the event here. Not a good place.

Dirty. But not the kind of dirty that gives you warm fuzzy feelings. No, it’s the kind of dirty that gives you… syphilis.
Stand-​offish bartenders, bad layout, just ugh.
But they pour strong drinks and play loud music. If you’re looking for a skeezy place to get stupid drunk and make bad decisions (but not the good kind of bad decisions), this is your place.

If I had no where else to go … I’d think about coming here… maybe?
This place used to be a strip club. and well. in my opinion it still feels too much like strip club.
I don’t like the vibe, the crowd, the décor. It’s just a below average spot with no «wow» factor.
By crowd I mean I don’t like that it’s always 18+. I’m not into being around underage folks all the time.
I’ve only been a handful of times … and I can say that everyone that worked the nights I was there was really nice, promoters for some of the events there are also great (so I will so promoted events are much better). but this place is just not for me and if you are into a true nightlife experience. probably not you either.
College bar. *maybe*. anything else. not so much.

I remember this place when it was a strip club, and then when it was a regular club with leftover poles and banquettes. Really, removing the poles was a mistake.
Oh, and it totally reeked of vomit when we were there. Ew.
That said, there was a funny moment where my guy friend had been waiting ten minutes for drinks and as soon as I bellied up next to him, I got served. He was mad, I was mildly appreciative. So girls: get the rounds.

As the last stop on a barhop down 21^st/​Broadway, I was a bit apprehensive when I heard we were going to a place that had dancing given the inebriation level of many of our friends and the potential for annoying patrons. I believe my exact words were «Aw man, we’re going to a dance club full of skanks and douches? Whhhyyyy?» Well, for the first time ever, I was WRONG. I’m a big girl, I can admit it.
This place was the shiznit. People in there were dressed from casual blue jeans and T shirts to hair gelled popped collar douches lookin to score. Chicks were everywhere from completely normal to completely skanky. And I’d say most of the people were leaning toward normal. (Didn’t see any goths as the previous review stated, not sure what was up the night they went.) The DJ was cranking old skool rap and dance music and new stuff as well. The dance floor is really huge and it is lit up like Saturday Night Fever on crack. As soon as I saw it I squealed and clapped my hands and said «OOOOOH I WANNA DANCE!!» And dance I did, until I was caught up in a sweaty mess of dancing bliss! The best thing is this dance floor was not too packed so you didn’t have to throw elbows to get some room for your kickass moves. And there’s a mirror on one end so if you want to dance with yourself a la Tucker Max you can.
The bartenders were pretty fast with the drinks and they had a good pour in them. Just don’t bring your tasty beverage on the dance floor because the bouncer guy will make you come right back and put it on the ledge beside the floor. There’s a patio out front for your smoking and «I need to get some air because I’m sweating like a pig» needs.
Overall I’d say I was pleasantly surprised by this place and will want to go back again. Since they closed down Johnny Jackson’s Soul Satisfaction I guess this will have to be my go-​to casual dance bar when I come home to visit.

When I went to Hollywood Disco (formerly Code Blue) I was a little worried. I usually don’t feel so out of place in a goth club, though admittedly I don’t blend perfectly in either, but that day I was still in the purple and white floral sun dress I had been wearing to a friend’s cookout earlier. The surprise was that I didn’t see any accusatory or discriminating looks. I stood out, but in a crowd of people used to standing out, no one seemed to care.
Relief set in and I was free to enjoy my evening. The drinks were stiff and well-​priced, always a delightful combo. The place is a lot larger than it looks from the inside and was full but not overly crowded. The very best part is the dance floor. It is lighted a la Saturday Night Fever. Also, it was actually being used! Couple and singles alike were crowding it dancing with a lot of skill and almost no inhibition.
I met new people everywhere I turned, got a little buzzed, danced my butt off, and had an all-​around great time.
But a word of advice: it might not hurt to crank up the eyeliner and change out of the sun dress if you’re shy because the first few minutes were still a bit awkward.
