The Lazy Lizard International Hostel

I would give this place six stars if I could! I’m staying here while visiting Arches and Canyon Lands. It comes to $ 12 a night for a dorm bed which is cheaper than a lot of campsites. It’s clean with access to showers and a full kitchen. The beds are seriously comfortable for a bunch of hostel bunks and the people who work here are super nice! Definitely check this place out if your looking for a budget friendly place to stay in Moab, it’s you’re best bet for sure!

Great hostel for it’s $ 12 pricetag. A little antiquated but hey it’s the desert. The place doesn’t seem to be locked ever but crime shouldn’t be an issue with the type of crowd staying here. Will definitely come through again if ever in Moab.

This review is strictly on the showers!
They are awesome.
We live full time in our RV, typically using campground or other available facilities to shower and such. However, we were dry camping in Moab and wanted to save our limited water supply for more important things… so we looked online for places to shower in Moab.
To our surprise, there were a ton of places ranging from $ 3-​$ 10…some of which had time limits. The Lazy Lizard Hostel was among the cheapest at $ 3, so we weren’t sure what to expect, but seeing as there were 4 of us, we couldn’t justify $ 40 to shower… we might as well have gotten a hotel for the night.
But these showers were worth every penny!
After getting used to limited heat or zero water pressure, we come to expect that, but these showers had heat and pressure!
The bathhouse was slightly out dated, but cute and great for travelers. It had 3 shower stalls that had ample space to dry off and change not making you feel cramped. Each one had hooks and a nice size bench so you didn’t have to worry about where to put your stuff.
Everyone there was also very friendly and regardless of only being there a short time to shower, we met a bunch of people!
Who knew a shower review could get so long! But if we were ever to return to Moab without our «home» in tow, we would definitely stay here!

Auberge très sympathique, les gérants sont très gentils et arrangeants. Endroit très propre, les cabanes privatives sont très calme, les chambres dans la maison sont peu isolées du bruit mais la nuit tout le monde dort. Je recommande !

I had a freaking great time at the Lazy Lizard. A group of us stayed up late one night and played Feed the Kitty (it’s in the common room) haha. And you absolutely cannot beat the price!!! Definitely would recommend this place.

I loved this place. I’ve never stayed in a hostel before, so this was a great experience. I love the community-​oriented feel. I don’t think I’ve met so many friendly strangers in one place before, outside of Texas. :)
The room was small but sufficient. The bed was good, the heater worked, the bath house was good enough. The staff was wonderful and so very friendly. Food was offered to us more than once!
There are dorm-​style rooms and private rooms. We opted for the private room.
If you’re looking for a budget stay, this place is pretty awesome! I’m glad I stepped outside of the box and tried the Lazy Lizard.

We staid for 4 days and our favorite part was leaving. The place isn’t completely terrible we just weren’t use to any place being this run down and still open. its literally a bed to sleep in… you might fall through the floor in the bathroom or have to clean your own dishes before you use them but it’s cheap and the people are extremely friendly and nice. And as far as air you will either burn or freeze there is no in between. but if you simply need a place to sleep it will do

Moab’s best kept budget lodging secret, for now anyway…
We got frustrated by the exorbitants rates even the dive motels like the Apache were soaking tourists with so we rolled the dice and decided to lay the lumber on the Lazy Lizard.
We rolled into Moab late at night from the south after dodging deer all the way in. The Lizard is NOT well marked and you’ll have to drive slowly or you’ll miss it as its tucked away behind a self-​storage business about a mile south of the main downtown district. Drive down the dirt road and turn right at the end and you’ll be at the hostel. Check-​in area was pretty busy when we got there and the owner was waiting for us. He walked us out to our cabin which was spartan but spotlessly clean. Before he left, he fired up the swamp cooler which roared to life and made a hot night much more bearable.
As a whole, the cabin was quite good. The only issue we had was with the mattress which was really worn and shitty. Had we complained though I’m sure the owner would have either replaced it or put us in another cabin. Basic communal bathrooms were also spotless with plenty of hot and cold water. Common lounge and shared kitchen that everyone’s welcome to use. And yep, the old graybeard Denali was there along with us making pancakes for donations so be sure to take care of him. He’s also a wealth of information on the local area and other national parks so feel free to pick his brain.
All the lodging options (cabin, dorm, tent space) are extremely good value but I’d avoid the dorm unless your noise tolerance level is high as they’re adjacent to the bathrooms and the outside patio area where foot traffic is frequent. Or you can maybe make arrangements to live outta your Subaru like Denali! Heh!
Extra points for character. The resident cats wandered into our cabin more than once and made themselves at home. Friendly hippies and young backpackers abound. OUTSTANDING alternative to the bland overpriced chain lodging that dominates the tourist area downtown. Prior reservations are very necessary at this place or you’ll likely be shut out if you just expect a room to be available as you cruise by.
The Lizard is already marked down for a return stop the next time we roll into Moab.

I stayed here two weeks ago and loved every minute of it. This is a perfect spot to hang out and get to know some people from all over the world and the country while enjoying everything that Moab had to offer. It is central to great hiking, camping, climbing, biking and local flare.
The private cabin is perfect for a place to lay your head for the night, the restrooms are clean and the showers are hot. The guest were fantastic and willing to share and help each other out. I had a great time here and an looking forward to my next trip to Moab where I will most definitely be staying at the Lazy Lizard Hostel.

This place is awesome! Not your average hostel. The guests are chill and sociable. I had no complaints and really surprised how orderly and clean everything was. If you’re lucky you will get to meet Denali and his great cooking. Just be kind and make a donation if you eat his food which he cooks enough for everyone.
The showers and bathrooms are clean. Only minor suggestion is they may consider getting new shower curtains or taking them out for a good cleaning. Feels a bit mildewy.
I had private room #8 which was perfect for me, had small heater too. The bathroom was only 5 steps from the showers! Hot water was never an issue.
The main office is also where the kitchen and lounge are. Plenty of good signs to gently advise what is shared and not shared. Plus the sink is always cleared and cleaned at the end of each night.
It feels very welcoming here. Know it’s not a resort but more comparable to a motel. My first-​time staying at a hotel but it’s nothing like what my friends have told me when they stayed at other hotels.
Plus it’s sooo close to downtown and less than a minute from the best coffee (drive-​through) place across the street — the Wicked Brew opens at 6a!
Everyone commented on howbhardbitbis to find. It can be but if you look for the A1 Storage or Enterprise signs you will find it. There is a small yellow sign that says «Hostel» but can really only be seen if traveling northbound (away from the town). If you get into the town you have missed it.

Great hostel! The guy that checked us in was very nice and very helpful. He did everything he could to show us around and give us tips on things to do in Moab. We stayed in a cabin which was great. It had heat and ac, blackout curtains and solid locking door. Community room was cozy and good group of people hanging out there. Bathrooms and showers were clean and it nice hot water. I will stay here again!

Great little place to stay! Super clean facilities. Bathrooms and showers were spotless which is very nice to find at a place like this.
The building are old and interesting with a lot of local décor and maps covering the walls.
Great place to stay if you’re traveling on a budget!

I was extremely impressed by how clean our cabin was. For the two nights we stayed, I didn’t see a single bug inside which is hard to achieve in my experience with cabins. There were folded towels, soap, and plenty of blankets for us when we arrived. We got a cabin with a bunk bed and a twin bed. The four of us slept comfortably. The cabin also had air conditioning which was our main concern after being outside all day. The bathrooms are also very clean and are close to the cabins. Showers kept their temperature and never got cold.
This place is also right in town and convenient to lots of restaurants.

I stayed four nights in an upstairs main building private room. It was definitely worth it as I’m here for the National Parks, not to look at the inside of my room. All was clean, but nothing fancy. It felt like staying in a friend’s house. Very friendly people. I will be back!

Never experienced a hostel before and was definitely skeptical of what was to come. After meeting the owner, who rocked some purple round glasses, I felt more at ease about this place. Hot showers and cheap backyard camping made it worth it for sure

This is a great inexpensive hostel. I was in Moab and my boyfriend and I wanted to camp overnight. It is the busy season now and every campsite was full! We drove around for hours looking, even trying to find some dispersed camping, but Moab is pretty strict on where you can setup your tent. The cheapest hotel was over 200 dollars, so that wasn’t an option. We stumbled upon the hostel and went in. It was close to midnight. He said he could give us a private room for $ 34 dollars! Yes! He also said we could set up our tent in the backyard for $ 8 a person. This included use of the showers (yes they have HOT showers)! Not only did we get a spot to sleep, but we also got a shower.
For campers: If you do camp somewhere else, you can still come to the hostel and use their shower (I believe it is $ 3-​$ 4). They also have towels to use for $.50
The service was friendly, the facilities were clean. You may want to bring a pair of flip flops for the shower, just like in the college dorm. :)
Ran into a few people during my stay, all ranging from awesome to eccentric. Standard hostel crowd. Good place for a short stay or last minute option in Moab!

Understand: EVERY other hotel in this town charges EXORBITANT rates. It really does not make sense that there aren’t more hostels or cheap motels competing. Your options are basically: Motel 6 /​Ramada /​Comfort Inn for $ 150 a night, OR go camping, OR go to the Lazy Lizard for, like, under $ 15 a night.
Yes, it’s kind of an old rickety building. Yes, there are a lot of weird hippy travelers here. Yes, the rooms sometimes smell funky.
But it is clean, it is safe, it has WiFi, and damn, is it cheap and fun.

Just do it. Don’t think about it, just go.
Remember– this is a hostel that costs $ 11.02 a night for a bed in a dorm room. You share everything with everybody. This is not the Hilton… It’s way better.
Get ready to get weird.
And if you get the feeling that you want to stay– you’re not alone. Once again, don’t think about it– just do it.

The biggest downside to this hostel was trying to find it in the dark. If I hadn’t have had it plugged in to my GPS it would have been nearly impossible, and even then it was difficult, as it has just a small sign that is hidden when coming from the north, and the hostel itself is tucked away behind a storage unit building.
As for the hostel, I had no complaints about my night there. It was a bed, internet, hot shower, and a place too cook for just $ 10. Compared to the prices the hotels in the area cost, this place is an amazing deal. I have also backpacked around other countries, and this hostel really has an international feel to it. It is quirky, and not the most posh lodging ever, but you will find people from around the world staying there, and you can have some great conversations. If you’re strapped for cash or if you just enjoy meeting some really cool people and kicking back with a beer late into the night, this is the place to stay in Moab.
