3.5 stars which came from 2 visits. 1st visit we ordered: Shrimp & Grits with biscuit, Eggs Benedict with bacon, & the smaller breakfast plate of two eggs, toast, & bacon. The service was awesome on the first visit with water and coffee serviced immediately. Good recommendation of the shrimp & grits! The shrimp and grits were seasoned perfectly and so delicious however the biscuit was cold inside. The eggs benedict was large and delicious, while the eggs, toast, & bacon just that. I would give this visit a 4.5 because of the service and food, except for the cold biscuit. They second visit was terribly slow service. We sat our selves & never received water or a greeting. Finally we went to the counter to just order ourselves and were told that they do not order at the counter. Still took the girl 5 – 10 more minutes to come over and take our order while mumbling and annoyingly fanning herself. I had raved to friends about the place and it was a let down due to the service. I hope they can continue training and mentoring the service staff. Go for the food & prices — just be prepared for attitude depending on the day.

Try the shrimp and cheese grits! So flavorful. Had the chicken wings and waffles. Anxious to try the brisket… next time. Easy parking on Broadway. The service was great, so friendly. Great addition to the Northside. Even though I live Southside, we’ll be back!

It feels morally wrong for food to be this good. The shrimp and grits is possibly the best single dish I’ve had in years. Our server said that she likes the grits here better than the ones her Grandma in Texas makes. Her grandma called the chef to ask about the recipe. I mean geez what more do you need people?

This place is great! It’s a great place on the Northside of Minneapolis to stop and great food to go or dine-in. The breakfast tofu tacos are excellent; a light meal with great combination of flavor. Homemade tomato basil soup is delicious!

had the Broadway Benedict. it was okay although too much sauce making it less appetizing and wasn’t too fond of the slightly sour taste of it. but still good. jerk shrimp and grits was also okay. very nice customer service though.

Breaking Bread has been a welcoming and delicious addition to Broadway Ave. The food and the people will keep you coming back. I am lucky enough to work close this lovely restaurant so I stop by on my way into the office and for lunch. My favorite items are the Florentine Omelette with a side of bacon and the Dry Roasted Chicken with a side of Collard Greens. The Florentine omelette is full of tasty, good for you vegetables caramelized just right. I add a splash of Louisiana hot sauce and wash down with a coffee. The chicken was a later discovery but so flavorful and moist and the rich not too salty greens make it a filling lunch. As important as the food, the atmosphere and community feeling here cannot be overlooked. I always run into someone I know or strike up a conversation with someone I am happy to have met. Breaking Bread is definitely fulfilling its mission of good food and a commitment to social engagement and community.

Service has improved! Fast, smiley, sunny space. My food was a-maz-ing. How so many veggies could be so delicious, I have no idea, but they were! And the tomato basil soup is the perfect amount of flavor and creaminess! Also love the social responsibility of this restaurant!

Fairly easy to locate, you are definitely in the heart of Minneapolis. The jerk shrimp and rice was ok, $ 16.18 for the meal and a glass of lemonade. The menu changes so the meal I found on Unilocal that sounded good was not available .You may want to call ahead if you have a craving and think they still have it on their menu. I am elated that they accept Amex, but this was a one and done type of place for me.

I don’t know what it is, but this place has some sort of magic mojo going on. Breaking Bread Café is incredible. Is it the warm welcome from the cheery team upon entering the restaurant’s sunny space? The buttery biscuits kissed gently by the Crispy Edge Fairy — swimming in a terra cotta bath of indescribably savory turkey chorizo gravy? Or the crackling golden wings, that read like a sinfully delicious love letter from the curry– + cumin-scented spice markets of exotic distant lands? Breaking Bread Café + Catering is a magical, memorable treasure. So happy to have discovered this gem!

I have spent years seeking out a place in Minneapolis this delicious and socially conscious. The food has been just delightful every time and I can honestly say there isn’t a better dry rub chicken being served anywhere in this town. I thought my grandmothers cornbread was the best, but I was blown away by the coconut cornbread here. The place itself is very unassuming, but once you’re inside the smells are sensory overload and glorious! I have come back many times and boughten different friends on most occasions, no one has ever left dissatisfied. Plan to go with a little bit of time and patience, from what I gather the serving staff is often being trained as part of a community work program(BRAVO!), they are always super friendly and everyone inside seems ridiculously pleased with their meals.

Another fresh, good food option on West Broadway! Breaking Bread provides a bright, welcoming space and affordable comfort food for a good cause. Almost everything I’ve tried here has been on-point. The tilapia sandwich and the brisket sandwich(so huge!) were excellent. I enjoyed the dry-rub chicken, but I have to admit I’m no dry-rub connoisseur. I tried the Caribbean coleslaw and… did not like it. I’m kind of a spiciness wuss but not a TOTAL wuss(I eat red curry and everything), and it was too spicy for me to finish eating. I had my co-workers try it to find out if I was being unreasonable, and they informed me it was a little spicy but mostly not very good. It was made with either vinegar or oil or something instead of mayonnaise and not very well executed that time. Overall, good food, nice space, and friendly, prompt staff. But you should also know this is a social enterprise partnership of Appetite for Change and other Northside organizations. The restaurant is there as a positive community space, economic development, and jobs and job training for community members. Since it is a social enterprise, you might see some things a little rough around the edges(occasionally service, for instance, as there are trainees), but their heart is always there. I would eat here even if it weren’t for a good cause! The good cause is a bonus!

My boyfriend and I drove down here during our lunch hour anticipating a grand experience, which unfortunately was not the case. I ordered biscuits & gravy with a side of tomato soup while he ordered the wings and a side of chicken wild rice soup. We ended up waiting close to an hour and a half for our food. Extremely frustrated, we eventually got it to go because we were already over time for our lunch period. I couldn’t believe they didn’t even bring the soup out to us. What place takes over an hour to serve soup?! I have read the raving reviews and was extremely excited to try the food here but was very disappointed in the slow and inexperienced operations. By no means was the staff unfriendly, but as a paying customer — I don’t care how friendly you are, I still want my meal in a timely manner. As my boyfriend’s family has owned a successful restaurant for over 30 years, we completely empathize that lunch is certainly a high traffic time of day(although we went closer to 1PM to avoid the initial lunch rush). However, there were only 2 people helping prepare food in the kitchen which seems poorly planned to me. During our hour and a half wait we witnessed probably 5 or 6 other customers complain to the staff about the prolonged wait for food. At this point I cannot even review the food because 2 hours later and it’s still not here! I must add that I am a huge supporter of local businesses, particularly in North Minneapolis as I believe in the causes of good that are up and coming in this area. I am weary to ever come back after this horrible experience but I love this community too much to not show my support. I caution all guests to avoid the lunch hour, as I will definitely not be coming again during those hours. Another downfall is they close at 7 and are not open on the weekends so finding a convenient time to come back is really not so convenient. **Update: Went home with the food and managed to scarf down a few bites prior to returning to work. The biscuits and turkey gravy were excellent. Have yet to try my tomato soup that, evidently, took an hour and a half to pour into a container. My boyfriend enjoyed his chicken wild rice soup. I was a fan of the chicken wings but he gave it a ‘meh’. I felt the mac and cheese flavor was bland but he enjoyed that.

Love this place! If you like coconut, you have to try their coconut cornbread. Moist, flavorful, and it comes with a sweet butter that I don’t have words to describe. I bought two pieces and finished both before I got home. They have lots of seating indoors and a nice patio outside.

Been here twice and had some seriously fabulous food. The first time was a black bean burger — which was delicious. Today was the spicy buttermilk fried chicken sandwich with sriracha sauce and some greens. Super tasty. You should go.

Um, I’m still stuffed. Ok, this place gets 5 stars for several awesome reasons. Obviously, great food and service. I’ll get to that later. But also because they are doing something really neat in North Minneapolis. Cooking and serving REAL food. And affordable at that! I had the reuben sandwich, mostly because it came with kimchi slaw, which sounded siiiick. It was! It was a huge sandwich for $ 8 and had awesome flavor. The server brought me a side of some sort of unique horseradish– get that, whatever it was. Yum. The menu is small but filled with variety aaaand breakfast is served all day. Which makes me so happy. They have vegetarian and vegan options too– so cool! Come support this place. And, if you somehow still have room, go across the street to Cookie Cart, anther super cool organization, and get a cookie. :-)

Incredibly fresh food with excellent flavor combinations. Lunch items are priced affordably and the staff is courteous and friendly. The space is bright and clean with additional outdoor seating. Extra bonus: they have free wi-fi. If you are looking for a place to have lunch or meet some friends or hold an informal meeting, you have to try Breaking Bread Café!

Some wonderful things are going on here! I had attended the ribbon cutting ceremony and sampled some foods, so I had an idea of what to expect with taste. They describe the food as soul food with a twist of Latin inspiration. When I walked in today, there were only a few open spots to sit! I smiled to see the place full of locals spending their lunch here, giving back. The atmosphere inside was electric and bright! It was 12 noon and I couldn’t decided whether to order from the breakfast menu or lunch menu. I decided on the Veggie bean pretzel roll sandwich with chips, black bean/corn/avocado salad and a coconut cornbread with honey butter to go. The sandwich is has a bean paste on each side of a pretzel roll and then is filled with veggies, like squash, zucchini, onions, and bell peppers. The sandwich ratio was more bread than filling, so I ate it open faced and saved half for later. I have to say that the salad with the cornbread was a great combo. The salad was fresh and light, yet filling. The cornbread was a bite-sized piece, as it was a side added on for only $ 2. Next time I have to try the maraschino brisket sandwich and Caribbean coleslaw with a dessert! AND then, breakfast! Soooo many reasons to come back!
