First visit was when they first opened. The fish was very good and my husband enjoyed his chicken however the side dishes were terrible. When I put my fork in the Mac and cheese, their was milk running through it. Yuck! The other sides were bland. Decided recently to give them another try since they have been opened awhile and maybe had gotten better. Well no! Went to get a takeout platter of fish and chicken combo. When I got home, I was so disappointed. Once again the chicken was good but it was only 2 of the smallest wings I’ve ever seen. The 2 small pieces of fish was ok(a little spicy) and the potato casserole was nasty and the yams bland. Then they topped off this horrible platter with a tiny overcooked corn bread muffin. $ 23 for the smallest portions I’ve ever had at a Soul Food Restaurant. I Definetly won’t be coming back for a third time!

Always like to patronize new spots so I visited during what should have been a busy lunch hour. I should have taken a clue from the fact that I was their only customer. Food: I had hoped to try a catfish po’boy. Surprisingly, they had no catfish so I tried the andouille po’boy. Bad choice. The sandwich was soaked with too much sauce and toppings, making it very difficult to eat. What I could taste of the andouille seemed to have potential. The lettuce on top was clearly not fresh. The side of cole slaw was tasty but watery. Atmosphere: Between the television blaring in one corner and soul music blasting by the counter it would have been impossible to hold a conversation. What was worse was the lack of cleanliness. My shoes«clicked» on the floor as I walked. It was in need of a good cleaning(along with the tables). Personnel: Seemingly disinterested. Seems clear to me that, absent some major improvements, this spot will soon suffer the same fate as their predecessor at that location.

Came by and didnt know whether or not they were open — the place has very dim lighting. After asking about the size of the turkey leg combo, we ordered it only to find out it was discontinued. We ended up ordering smothered pork chops, cole slaw and fried green tomatoes. The gravy for the chops never came — I dont think they knew how to make it and there were only 3 slices of tomato. We also ordered fried whiting which tasted a little fishy, green beans which tasted like they had been cooked and. reheated and yams which were ok. Overall we were veey disappointed in the quality of food. The service was friendly and fast… there were about 5 people total including us during our 1 hr visit on a tuesday at 6pm.

This place is almost worth 3 stars… and here’s why. Service: depends — They don’t handle the rush well. When they get busy, prepare to check everything in your bag. Food: depends — Some nights everything is good, sometimes, not so much. If you like soul food, give it a try and see if this is your thing. I’ve had the fried fish plates(usually at least 3 – 4 stars) The po’boy(4 stars). The cornbread is cakey(that’s 0 stars for me, since I like my cornbread to taste like corn, but if you want cake, get it). The mac n cheese is different, but it tastes like/looks like real cheese, so give it a try… it’s at least 3.5 stars. The greens(0 stars… I like nutrients in my veggies, but I do realize that is quite atypical of traditional southern style soul food. If the old country, southern, nutrient-void veggie is what you want, you’ll love the green veggie selection here). **I am quickly realizing that I’m not a fan of soul food — overly sweetened, overcooked, fried foods are just no longer cutting it for me, so I did try to do this review as unbiased as possible, but I believe soul food doesn’t really hAVE to lead to heart disease.**

In re: to the glen allen location I was highly disappointed. I took a party of 9 to this location since all other choices had an extremely long wait. The place was hotter than heck. The cook who had more flour on him than the chicken itself and oresented himself as if he had menstrual cramps. It took over an hour for our food which was brought to us a couple of plates at a time with 15 min or so in between. The chicken was fried almost a burnt color, the potato salad was room temp, Mac n cheese was horrible… Maybe the other location is better but this one sucks.

I went to Soul Appetit with my family for a quick dinner. The restaurant was busy with takeout orders, so we decided to dine inside. I ordered a whiting(fish) combo. Soul Appetit Combos come with a side and drink. I chose macaroni & cheese as my side. My fish was fried to a nice crisp and seasoned very well. The macaroni & cheese was cheesy and tasty. Meals are served with cornbread. For drinks, customers have the option of choosing kool-aid instead of soda. Prices were reasonable for the amount of food. Service was a bit slow but the employees were polite. The restaurant was clean and well maintained. Overall, I really enjoyed my meal. I will be back to try other items on the menu. There are daily specials posted on the door. Soul Appetit is a good choice for soul food in Chesterfield. *The restaurant is located in a small strip near Chesterfield Town Center.”

I was surprised to learn of this soul food gem in Richmond. I ordered the brown sugar baked wings tossed in buffalo sauce, with mac and cheese, collard greens and green beans. I must say the wings were steroid chicken wings, kind of like the wings you see at Asian carryouts and that was a bit offputting. They were also not de-feathered to my liking. I did eat one and it was okay. I don’t know if I will order the wings again from here. The mac and cheese was just okay as well. Being that I am The Mac and Cheese Connoisseur, I will say that I’ve had better. It was nothing to write home about. I would even venture to say that it was almost flavorless, even with the cheeses. The bright spot of my meal were the green beans and collard greens. The green beans were very flavorful and tasted like what your granny would make in the summertime. I would definitely order these again and get a double helping(they are veggies, right?) The collards were also flavorful and had that kick to it just like I like my collards. They were tender and seasoned very well. I also drank the potlikker after(don’t judge me, I’m a Southern gal true to form, LOL). I recommend this place if you like quick and inexpensive southern food.

Having passed this place a number of times in what previously housed a very Pakistan restaurant, I decided we would stop in here for lunch today. As was true under the previous management, you order food at the counter. There were a couple of folks ahead of us upon entry and for some reason, the process was a little slow. If I had been smart, we would have left at that juncture. Instead, We stayed and thus embarked on one of the worst eating adventures during our time in Richmond. My wife ordered the whiting fish combo, my son a side of mac and cheese, and I the chicken salad. The fish looked well prepared and the breading was indeed crispy. However, I found the taste of the breading wasoff and was not helped by the overly fishy taste of the fish. I’m not going to belabor this review and will simply state that there was nothing positive about our eating experience here. Fortunately, my wife was ill and had no taste buds, otherwise she would have yet another reason not to trust my restaurant choices!

I went here for lunch today and I must say I was impressed with the changes that occurred since I last came here for lunch. The food was prepared very quickly and the fish was nicely breaded this time around. I also did not find any bones in the fish which was a huge plus. I can now say that I feel confident in recommending this place to other people around the area. While Soul Appetit might not catch the exact flavors that Mama J’s has in their food, you wont have to drive 12 miles to get some decent soul food if you are in the Midlothian area. FOURSTARS.

Fast service great food. I had the chicken and waffles and my friend had the fried fish. Both items were tasty. The greens were seasoned well and the waffle was not overdone. I will definitely come back. Glad this place is in Chesterfield.

This might be the only«Southern» or Comfort food in the area, or at least the only one I know of. Went here a while back when it first opened maybe a few months ago and heard from some co workers that it was worth checking out. It’s located just a couple minutes from Chesterfield Town Center. First off, my expectations are HIGH. I’ve eaten at the best Southern Restaurants in Richmond such as: Croaker’s Spot, Comfort, and Mama Js. I know what I like, and those restaurants deliver EVERYSINGLETIME. Came here for lunch time and there was only one other table in the whole place… already not a good sign. Me and my co workers decided to split the family WHOLE wing deal. 12 Whole Wings with a choice of two sides. These wings are actually the drum/wing combo and are HUGE. We got the gravy covered wings, sounds good, right? It was Made to order so it was piping hot when we got it. It wasn’t really what I was expecting. I was expecting the wings to be infused with the gravy, not just poured over the wings. wings didn’t even have time to soak in all the flavors. Gravy was just okay, too salty. Wings were cooked nicely though. It was probably my fault for ordering wings at a «soul» restaurant? Our sides were collard greens and cole slaw. The collard greens were definitely a miss. It was well under seasoned and was just mildly warm. didn’t taste like anything at all. Cole slaw was okay from what I remembered. Sadly, I think the ONLY thing I really enjoyed was their REAL Kook-aid they had for a drink option! I remember it being really really sweet and really really good. For the price, it was a good deal, but I’m not sure if I wanna come back though. Service was good, restaurant/bathroom were clean.
