Gilbert’s Bakery

A bit costly due to the fact it’s at the airport but great pastries and cortadito is a must.

I went to Terminal J in Miami International Airport today to accompany my son who was taking a flight to Baires in «Aerolineas Argentinas». Let me make a point cleat: my son was born in NYC and I have been living in the USA for almost forty years. We are no tourists, get it? When It was our turn to place the order with the cashier, she ignores us olympically and keeps talking to a co-​worker who was on her right side. I stopped enumerating our order and I said calmly: «when you have some time for us we will continue talking to you.» She then faced me for the first time and said: «I don’t
need to look at your face. I got all your order.“She did not and I had to repeat it. Then she started ranting about being mistreated, bla-​bla-​bla, the usual false victimizaton BS of «certain» Hispanics in the infamous «Banana Republic of South Florida». Listen my dear «Gilbert», if you don’t like our kind then do not set up shop where we will be calling at your counter. WISE UP. By the wsy the «doppio macchiato» I got was simply perfect… What a pity I am not welcome there. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to the Gilbert and Unilocal people too. Dr. Laplume

It would get zero stars if I had the option. This is a really poor representation of Gilberts and cuban food in general. My croquetas and cuban toast came out of the refrigerator and they nuked it in a subway style microwave. Couldn’t even tell the difference between the ham and chicken croquetas which looked more like mystery meat taquitos. Had to toss the stale toast… wish this terminal had a Versailles/​La Carreta because they never disappoint… Sadly, the McDonald’s next to it would have been a better option.

Starving. Early morning. On the first leg of a 15 hour trip… and this was one of the only places open. Don’t get me wrong, I was pretty stoked to have some Cuban food… but it was just meh.
Cuban sandwich — super small. It was reminiscent of a sandwich you’d get at a gasstation. A little better than I imagine those would be… but not by much.
4 pastelitos de guava — I thought these would be full size. Wrong. These were mini. Luckily my family turned down the ones I brought to share with them so I was able to scarf down all 4. They were ok. A little doughy (uncooked) which made them chewier than I am used to — but they weren’t horrible.
This was $ 13. I get it’s the airport — but damn for 4 mini pastelitos and a sad sandwich… which was also pretty small… that’s a lot.
The staff was just as disappointing as the food. I understand that you were just opening up — but they ignored me for most of the time I hung out at the counter and then had to ask me twice what I ordered again. There was no one else around, how can you forget a simple order? They were more interested in chatting with each other it seemed. Even when I asked them a question — it was a very simple answer. No energy, no personality — no bueno.
I don’t think I’ll ever stop in again to grab a bite when traveling out of MIA.

Don’t waste your hard earned money. No filling in their pastries and the breading is stale! I went back and asked for another and was told they’re all like that. They must be use to people complaining. Anyway what do they care, good chance you’ll be boarding a flight so by the time you see what you got you’ll be gone and they don’t have to deal with you.

Worst place i ever been to… Two ladies that work at the one located at terminal J were extremely rude. Bad service, bad quality, rude people… Do not go to this awful place

I never guessed that this spot at an airport terminal would actually taste good. I figured since there’s so much Argentian/​Cuban influence out in Miami, it’s worth a shot.
The cheese pastillo was good, the ham croquette was also delicious. Meat pie was also good as well. I’d definitely eat here again when I’m at the airport.

20 minutes to get a tostada and they don’t speak English. I’ll never understand how you can work on US SOIL and not speak any English. It’s frustrating

I’ll fly Delta from Miami back to NYC just so I can have another chance to sample the goods at Gilbert’s.
Sure, I had breakfast about two hours ago but I couldn’t rely on a pack of airline pretzels to keep me full for the 2.5 hour flight. Enter the food court area of Terminal S and specifically, Gilbert’s Bakery.
Display cases of tempting treats all presented their siren song but eventually I selected a cuban sandwich (warmed up) and a pineapple tart pastry.
I received my bag that contained the goods and intended to save the items for the flight.
This conviction lasted all of five seconds as I found a free table and ripped open the bag containing my airplane snack.
At first I was a little disappointed that bot the sandwich and pastry were somewhat jammed into a small box but all was forgiven after the first bite of the cuban sandwich. What surprised me the most (in a very good way) was how soft the actual bread was compared to the panini-​like harder breads I’ve had on cuban sandwiches in the north.
I heartily approved with each bite of the bread. Moments later a similar epiphany of flavor burst into my mouth in the form of a pineapple tart. At the rate I was eating I briefly considered reenacting Tom Hanks’ «The Terminal» and living here for awhile.
I also appreciate the story behind Gilbert’s, one of economic liberty trumping over collectivist communist aggression. Having their original business seized by the Cuban state of Castro, the family behind this bakery regrouped and relocated to the US. I’m glad to see they’ve prospered and that their hard work is rewarded.
Take that Uncle Joe (Stalin) !
So when I’m back in Terminal S I’ll be sure to have another bite at Gilbert’s and savor the sweet taste of freedom.

I was dying for one last cafecito before leaving Miami, and another bite of key lime pie. This place was the answer I was looking for! Whether on your way in or out of the area, if you’re in the Delta terminal it’s worth a stop.

I was so happy to find this place at MIA this past Saturday morning. I couldn’t spend 4 hours in Miami without a Cubano, so I had one for breakfast here while waiting for my flight back to DCA via PHL. The quality was outstanding (especially for an airport sandwich counter/​deli). The bread was fresh and so was the meat. They had several other kinds of sandwiches here that were in the counter window that were made fresh as well. I am sure I will grab a sandwich from here again when I am flying through in a couple weeks.
