I’ve been shopping at the Kialee Asian market before I moved to Yosemite eight years ago. Now that I am closer, I hit them up nearly every time I’m in Merced, not to just stock up on staples, but to indulge in the great fresh seasonal veggies they sell. Always friendly, they are happy to answer my many questions. Their prices are frequently better than I get at the grocery store and they stock items I have not been able to find elsewhere. As vegans, we shop for a wide variety of foods, even backpacking food! Parking is always easy when I park in the large lot at the rear of the market off of 16th, just look for the sign. I heartily recommend Kialee!

Amazing selection of bright neon colored Hmong fabrics and costume supplies! I love the Hmong people’s taste in colors and fashion, so I buy the ribbons, fabrics, and fringe, and sew my own clothes with it. its fun! Delicious asian treats and foods to cook at home! I like their pre-packed warm meals — chicken and rice with spicy sauce. Also, they sell a package of green thai curry paste, just mix with coconut milk and add chicken and veggies! yummy!

Finally a place in Merced where Asian goods can be brought. For those of us who left our home town to go to the University here, really do miss the food from home and these restaurants around here don’t usually cut it. So why not make it ourselves, well we couldn’t till now. I think it’s a Hmong own place, but you can find your Asian fixing of ingredient to make certain types of food. They sell the typical stuff you would find at 99 Ranch, but not as much stuff as it. They don’t sell like meats or sea food, but they have some in there freezers and if you’re hungry they have like 3 dollar meals already made with rice, chowmein and chicken. You can get your snacks here and more. The Owners are really nice so go ahead and ask them questions, if you need help. I’m pretty sure this store is family own.

Big, clean, organized, & well stocked with interesting East Asian items from food to small medicinal ointments. Also has fashion clothing, jewelry, shoes, & tailoring – how convenient! Nice place to stop by when you’re strolling down newly renovated Downtown Merced Center. Personally like to check out the local art gallery next door too – free & always interesting.
