240 Centre Street

The old police headquarters at 240 Centre St really deserves to be mentioned here on Unilocal.Not only is it a NYC landmark but it’s on the National Register of Historic Places. Construction on the building started in 1905 (just a couple years after the Flatiron building was completed) and was finished in 1909. It was designed and built as the NYPD headquarters once the city consolidated five surrounding countys to be part of New York City and needed an expanded home base. It served as the NYPD headquarters from 1909 – 1973, sadly since the late 80s the building has been codos so you can’t really go inside unless you know someone who lives there. But like the Flatiron building, the real beauty is from the outside. The best time to see and photograph the building is later on the day from the northern side of the building when the warm sunlight scrapes across the wonderful architecture.
