I had read about Double B’s a few weeks ago in the Hippo, and decided to check them out for breakfast this past Sunday with a friend who lives in the neighborhood. I was familiar with the space as home to several restaurants that haven’t lasted too long. We walked in about ½ hour before they were closing(at 1pm on Sundays) and the place was pretty quiet. We took a seat at one of the window tables, with a nice view down Amory to the arches and parks with a sliver of a view of downtown. Our server was attentive, friendly and prompt. We both ordered breakfast options. I got the breakfast special – two eggs, bacon, home fries and toast – for a steal at $ 3.75. I decided to splurge and get an extra side, still coming in at under $ 6 total, but the amount of food in the special would have been plenty. All the food we got was fairly standard breakfast fare, but very good. The lunch and dinner options sounded good, as well, with some standard(but very reasonably priced) items like hamburger, steak tips and chicken tenders. I’ve always liked the building Double B’s is in – a small, free-standing storefront right up on the sidewalk, dwarfed by one of the most beautiful Victorians on the West Side. This was my first time seeing the inside of the place, and I really liked it. It was very simple, small and warm. There was plenty of sunlight with no lights on in the dining room, and candles hung along the walls(unlit, but presumably lit at night). A heater in the rear of the room could have fooled me for an old woodstove at first, giving the place a cozy, homey feel. Double B’s seems like the sort of neighborhood spot that every neighborhood should have, with simple but well-prepared food at reasonable prices in a welcoming environment. I really hope they make it longer than some of the other restaurants in the space.

I had breakfast at Double B’s Diner, which opened recently in the former Alperini’s space at 157 Amory Street. This small building has been home to several eateries in recent years which have opened and closed for short stints. Double B’s Diner started out as Barb’s Coffee Plus, which was a small shop specializing in K-cups sales, originally located on Mast Road in Pinardville. I can recall several months ago driving through Pinardville and I needed some caffeine. I spotted Barb’s Coffee Plus and was actually waved into the parking lot by an employee. I ended up choosing a single Green Mountain Breakfast Blend K-Cup and brewing my drink onsite for $ 1. My caffeine fix was met that cold winter day. However, I was thinking to myself if this shop was going to survive on just selling K-cups only(need a food menu too?) since there are several other places in the area also selling K-cups at comparable prices. Fast forward, Double B’s Diner is now here selling K-cups and serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a comfortable cozy atmosphere. The menu is fairly streamlined which includes the typical breakfast dishes including eggs, omelets, breakfast sandwiches, pancakes, French toast, hash, and Green Mountain Coffee, plus salads, burgers, hot dogs, subs, salads, fries, steak tips, homemade chicken tenders, and homemade onion rings. The prices here are reasonable here, menu prices under $ 10. As for the K-cups(sales), the prices are $ 0.75 for a single K-cup and $ 14.99 for 24 K-cups. They also serve Gifford’s Ice Cream and have a takeout window. I arrived here for breakfast during mid-morning on a Saturday. The place was pretty quiet upon arrival and I took a seat at an open table. Barb(owner) was not here since she had a family emergency to tend to. Her business partner was running the dining room and kitchen solo. I was offered coffee($ 1.25) as I took a seat. The coffee was brewed just right, just what I needed to start my day. The cozy dining room looked very inviting with painted yellow walls, coffee mug prints, wood floor, shiny painted tables(olive color) and sturdy wooden chairs. I ordered a Western Omelet($ 5.95) with pan fries and wheat toast. The food was cooked to order and served to my table in about 10 minutes. The omelet was a good sized, a thin folded egg filled with chunks of honey ham, green peppers, onions, and cheese. The pan fries were chunks of red skin potatoes, grilled and seasoned with onions. The wheat toast was buttered. The business partner came out to the dining room to speak with me and this was her first time cooking breakfast here since Barb was usually the regular cook here. The breakfast food was very good, very tasty and filling, so very nice job! I was also offered refills on the coffee, which I accepted. I will have to return to Double B’s Diner for the homemade chicken tenders and onion rings, which was highly recommended by other diners.
