Randomly stumbled upon this place on my way back from LAX. We also wanted to drive by the Watts towers. This place is a gem. I love history. The staff were very friendly also when we did a to-go order at 2pm on a Friday. I will return for some grits! Extra star for the vegan/vegetarian options.

Amazing history. Delicious food. Best grits I’ve had in SoCal. A beautiful space that I fell in love with immediately.

I was really looking forward to trying this place based on pictures and trying a new whole in the wall place. My family and I arrived and waited along side other people; however, NOONE came to greet us or to at least tell us how long the wait time was. We ended up leaving. Maybe we will be back at a later day to give them another shot just to try their food.

First, the food is awesome. My mom had the chicken wing breakfast with eggs, grits, and biscuits. The fried chicken was, in my opinion, even better than the LA institution Roscoe’s. I had the spicy hot links breakfast which was also great. Bisciuts were a tad dry is my only complaint. This place is a little piece of history. Those who aren’t so quick to write of a community like watts, or those who are indeed a part of it, are in for a treat. If youre looking for humble, down home, southern cooking with a splash of vibrant culture, this is the place for you. Situated in what I think is a community rec center, the walls are covered with autographs of famous guests, and covers of classic albums, all while a tv played a video of a 70s soul festival. Couldn’t ask for a more genuine ambiance for the style of food.

Me and two of my fellow cyclist tried to eat here last Sunday. Unfortunately getting there an hour before they closed at 4:00 was too late because we were told they were no longer serving. We were a little taken back and very disappointed. It was CicLAvia, we had rode over 30 miles, but I guess they make no exceptions even though about 10 of our fellow riders were there. They missed out on five customers because two others came in and got turned away a couple of minutes after we were turned away. However, I understand the food is good and may be the only sit down restaurant or one of only a few sit down restaurants in the Watts area.

Inside The College Bridge Academy parking lot you’ll find a little piece of LA history. Built in the 60s, Watts Coffee House was the hot spot for local artists, Hollywood stars, and some members of the Black Panther party according to LA Times. Southern/soul food and cultural pride is at the heart of this eatery. You are immediately transported back into time the minute you enter this eclectic coffee shop. Old school and modern jams playing in the background and historic footage on display on an old school color screen television. Gritts: Buttery and cooked just right. Biscuits and gravy: Biscuits were oh so fluffy! Gravy was delish! Scrambled egges were your typical scramble you’d get at other establishments. Salmon croquettes were so tasty! I was worried they were going to be dry and flavorless, but they were definitely not! There are remnants of fish bone, but nothing that would get in the way of your meal. Potatoes: I ordered them homestyle not hash browns. They were also delish. I also hear the chicken and waffles are delish. I added a little salt and everything was perfect! Lots of history on display in this place. I look forward to my next visit!

It is a true hole in the wall. But what a shear treasure!!! I had grits eggs wings and croquette. Fabulously done. A bit of a wait for table service because they only had the 1 lady waiting tables. The food quality was outstanding!!! A diamond in the rough for sure. Please go for breakfast and do your tummy a favor!!!

It’s a small oasis in the neighborhood, has an at home feel to it. Food? Good!!! Waffles are buttery and fluffy. I enjoyed it but need more hostess.

First timer: The food was delish. I went for brunch and had cat fish, eggs, bread pudding(off the hook), fried chicken, sausage, cheesy grits, hash browns, whew! They brought out more/different food but I couldn’t eat another thing. I left there full and satisfied. I will be back. Highly recommended.

I hadn’t been here in 20 years but I’m glad to return a nice hidden gem of Watts… I had the salmon croquettes(not like my Moms) but they were ok a little on the dry side but a little hot sauce and ketchup remedied that… loved the waffle I got from checking in… the grits were good after adding a little salt and pepper… the smothered potatoes were good got a side of gravy to go over them… by everything being cooked to order it’s a little wait for your food… service was good

Small little establish but big flavor with big portions! It’s inside of a school and very old school. Nevertheless I would definitely come back and bring my friends & family! I love this spot! Everybody was nice and friendly!

I am very disappointed on my visit to this restaurant to say the least. I’ve been wanting to try this place as I am a foodie so i had Unilocaled soulfood breakfast and came upon this place and was interest once seeing the menu and some of the reviews. Pulling up to the building should have been a «Red flag» being they share a building with a college prep school of some sort. So my friend and I entered the building we walk to the back where the restaurant is located very small hole in the wall… We’re greeted by this loud woman whom of which is very unprofessional while ordering she made suggestions for us starting with the drinks then we order our food i ask about the coupon that is online she then tells me they have not coupon so i go in my phone and pull up the coupon she then loudly says«Girllllll» the coupons has been expired but i’ll give you a waffle so she brings the food out and when my friends ask for butter… She then explains girl you don’t need no butter cause the batter has 2lb of butter in it and walks off so the other waiter must have heard what my friend asked for cause then brings butter… The food was ok the service not ok and to say the least i will not drive from Pasadena to Los angeles for breakfast to have someone speak to me like their my parent and to get mediocre food…

Watts Coffee House is simply amazing. I love the concept, the food, the space, and the rich history! Such a treat! The hubby got their gangsta breakfast with homemade biscuits and I opted for the Country Biscuit Heaven with a side of 2 large eggs. We were both extremely satisfied with our meal. Their food truly is southern comfort. The coffee is free, but they do charge a dine-in charge, so… yeah. Give & take. Lol. Side note: a Unilocal check-in gets you a free waffle. Do it! My only criticism, and please take it with a grain of salt, is that it was freezing inside. We were given a space heater, but it wasn’t really blowing out hot air. The coffee helped keep us warm. Despite this, we will definitely be back.

I came here because my sister liked it when they first opened. This place is horrible. Food is alright. Services sucks ass. You have to wait 20 minutes for everything. The bathroom should be quarantined for the filth, and no seat covers. Waitress is retarded and slow moving! Wont be back and definately wont tell others. NOSTARSTHEYMAKEYOUCHOOSE A STAR!!!

Really disappointed at the wait for our meals today. My coworker and I came here for lunch, hoping to be in and out in about an hour but with maybe 12 guests, 2 waiters and 2 cooks we waited for nearly an hour for our food and needed to take it to go which mind you took just as long to produce. No compensation, just a small apology. Very disappointing! In terms of food, I had the Cajun chicken sandwich which simply tasted like an overgrown Wendy’s chicken sandwich. It was very disappointing since I raved about this place to my friend that we should try. On top of that we didn’t get our free waffle for checking in with Unilocal.I don’t think I could come here again!!!

Ok, gotta go with some of the other Unilocaler on this one. This place is very dated and clutter-ish and could use a bit of dusting! It’s a little hard to find as I was expecting a store front or it being visible from the street(which it isn’t) Instead, it’s hidden inside a community building of some sort. With«coffee house» in its name I figured there would be a ton of coffee choices you know like a «coffee house» but nope not at all :(. This place is more of a breakfast joint. I gotta admit the food was GOOOOOD& very hometown which I love! I got the chicken«wangs» special which includes 2 wings(seasoned WELL), eggs and breakfast potatoes(but you can choose a different side) and biscuits or toast. Portions are pretty big! And to mk this even better all this was $ 4.95 saaaaay what?! No joke! I will definitely come back soon!
