A few months ago, I began shopping for an engagement ring. I was in no hurry and I told myself if I found one the right diamond for the right price I will buy it. If not, o well my girlfriend will just have to wait. I went to all the top rated jewelry shops listed on Unilocal: shops like Eli Jewelry, Diamond Inc, Icing on the Ring, you name I probably went to them. Most of these jewelry shops had great customer service and many diamonds to pick from. I must have looked at 50+ diamonds ranging from 1.2 carats to 1.8 carats, color E to I, SI1 to vvs2. I narrowed down my search to a couple 1.5 carat diamonds, but I was still hesitant to buy. I just didn’t fell it. It might have been the combination of shadiness, price, quality or the unknown (will I actually get what I pay for, am I getting the best deal?).
One week before my anniversary trip to Hawaii, I found Poom Gems and decided to give it a try since it was located in little Tokyo (same plaza as Sushi Go 55, Honda-​ya!). Keep in mind by this time I’ve seen so many diamonds, I knew exactly what I wanted.
I told Hideko what I was looking for and she said «I do not have any of those diamonds here but give me 30 minutes and I will bring some back.» She made a couple phone calls and closed up shop. I went to lunch upstairs and by the time I was done, Hideko was back. BAM! She had 10 – 15 diamonds. I analyzed all of them and FOUND THE ONE! 1.5 cushion cut, great specs, and it had the extremely rare ½ window pane ½ crushed ice look. When she told me the price I couldn’t believe it. It was hundreds less than all the other shops. As for the ring, she custom made a halo setting for the same price other shops charged for their basic four prong mold setting. I gave her some details I would like on the ring, paid for my diamond and left the rest to her.
A week later, I picked up my ring. It was beautiful! Every detail I wanted. The final price = wayyyy lower than all those top rated jewelry shops in downtown. Poom Gem’s service, quality, and pricing can not be beat. I will definitely be back for the wedding bands.

This place has been in business for over 20 years. The owner is GIA certified and was a diamond grader for many years before. What does this mean to me? It means that I was able to get a Cartier engagement inspire ring for almost half the price. After discussing with the owner, it was explained to me that the quality of the diamond exceeded the minimum requirement for Cartier. My fiancé loves it!!!
