my commie friend would probably cringe at the fact that i’m reviewing his party’s publishing press on Unilocal, but hey, such is the capitalist world we live in and any publicity for indie printing presses is good, right? note: pathfinder’s books are coming from a decidedly marxist perspective and do not purport to be «objective»(if you even believe such a concept to exist). i really enjoy their catalog because they publish on a wide range of issues relating to left/radical/socialist/worker/people of color politics. i first got turned on to them for their book, «our history is still being written: the story of three chinese-cuban generals in the cuban revolution.» this book seriously rocked my world; i’m a latin americanist scholar who focuses on cuba and i had never heard of a diasporic chinese population, let alone any that participated in the 1959 revolution. i attended a couple of book talks on the 2007 book tour which were extremely interesting. as with anything you read, come into it with a critical eye but don’t be afraid to learn something new, either.
