I love Harolds and Belles first off… particularly when the old owner was alive. That said. The Jambalaya was soupy. This is the first time ever I had a complaint about a standard. Soupy and too much tomato flavor. End of that. Now it might warm up your place if you put a few large living plants strategically. The décor is modern — but it lacks warmth.

I recently discovered Harold and Belle’s and I’m absolutely in love! From the food to the restaurant décor, even the instrumental hip hop band on Friday nights, this place has it all! I’ve had the pleasure of meeting the owners Jessica and Ryan and they are fantastic and the sweetest coupe you’ll ever meet. I think its incredible how three generations later they are keeping the soul of cajun/creole food alive! My favorite thing to eat there are the catfish nuggets which are a great appetizer for sharing. Come with an appetite because the portions are big and do not disappoint! Another thing i love about this restaurant is the history surrounding the community and establishment. They even have a signed menu from Rosa Parks! I mean how cool is that??? If I were you i’d get here asap!

I 1st came here in 1992 my birthday and have been here at least once a year till now, but no more. The changes are not good, 1st the service was slow. 2nd the food wasn’t as good. 3rd everything has gone up in price too much. This used to be a diamond in the ruff now it just in the ruff. Would tell everyone about how good the shrimp scampi was but not anymore. The 1st time I went there my brother told that everything is good but get the shrimp scampi and I did for 24 years with at least 40 visits. I’m very sad that my yearly and favorite restaurant is no more.

Let me start out with one of the only positive things about the night — the food was delicious. With the atrocious service we had, my expectations were so low that I would not have been surprised if I received terrible food as well. To my surprise, I absolutely loved the shrimp scampi. It was not your traditional shrimp scampi, nor was I expecting my meal to look the way it did, however it was very very delicious. The catfish nuggets and the fresh oysters were good as well. To start our experience at Harold & Belle’s we were seated at an extremely wobbly table directly under the blasting air conditioning. No big deal right? We were so hungry that we decided to tough it out and deal with a moving table for the entirety of our meal while shivering quite a bit. When our server came to greet us she was very kind and offered us some fresh bread. We of course gladly accepted the offer of bread to satisfy our hunger before our meal. Unfortunately, this«fresh» bread was never delivered to us. Not to mention, our table was not even properly dressed — only two people at the entire table actually had a place setting. Let’s forget about everyone else right? After sitting at our table empty handed for a while, we flagged down our server in order to place our order. An hour goes by without a plate of food in site. During this hour+ wait somehow a server just leaves her empty pitcher of water on our table. No water to serve ourselves, just an empty pitcher sitting there like she decided she didn’t want to carry it anymore. Eventually, our server eventually comes up to our table and asks if we would like any dessert to conclude our meal. I’m not sure what her thought process was. We had been sitting there for at minimum an hour without any food in front of us. How could she have possibly thought we finished our meal. She never even brought us anything; Not even bread. When we mentioned that we hadn’t even received our food yet, she exclaimed«Oh my god! None of you have received anything yet? How patient of you!», and then proceeded to walk away without any notice of when we would actually be receiving the food we ordered over an hour ago, any sort of apology, or any explanation of why we had been sitting there for so long. An hour and a half had officially gone by since we had placed our order and we were finally receiving our meals. Another server approached our table and mentioned that the extreme wait was noted and that the manager would be taking care of our entire bill. This was greatly appreciated seeing that we were practically ignored for an hour and a half. I thought hopefully this would have to be the last mistake they made tonight — they noted their mistakes with us and would improve. I was wrong. The sides that I was paying for, the sides that were supposed to come with my meal were never given to me. Halfway through finishing our meal I was finally able to flag down our server to ask her about the sides I had never received. Again, she reacted completely confused as to why I had not received my sides. Well, I mean, she never gave them to me… That could be a very obvious answer to most… Just as she had never delivered our meals. Something other than doing her job must have been on her mind tonight. To conclude this extremely and unnecessarily lengthy meal, it was practically impossible to receive our check. Just like the entirety of our meal, we were forgotten yet again. Oh and that comped check that we were expecting was a complete lie. We were charged for the entire bill without a single apology or appetizer being deducted. Overall, the service was horrendous. However, if you can deal with sitting around for hours and being ignored and lied to, I’d recommend trying their food. For me it was not worth the hassle. Maybe I’ll get their food to go next time.

I’m giving one star for the food, and one star for the staff. Staff is very nice and friendly, however service is extremely slow. It took 20mins to get water, 35 mins to serve me an alcoholic beverage. I had my salad before I had my drink! We had bread, but no saucer plates. The food has great potential when it’s served hot and not luke warm… actually so cool you can put your finger in it! The place has a good vibe, the service is just extremely SLOW! Also I’ve seen the staff arguing right in front of me while waiting for my table… smh! Overall, I wish it was better. I’ve had the food at its best when it first opened, and I’ve had the food at its worst months later.

We found this place by accident in 2012. As we returned today, our mouths watering, we were not disappointed. Well worth the Father’s Day wait! My customary order is the shrimp and crawfish étouffée, and once again it did not disappoint. Dad and the jambalaya and hot links with red beans, and the hubby had the blackened pork chops. All proof that the early mouth watering was not in vane. The hurricane was one of the better I have had, and packed a punch. I look forward to trying the rest of the recommendations Jasmine had offered us. We so hope to return soon. It is so hard to try everything when you have a favorite. Can’t wait to come back. Hopefully we will not wait two years to make it happen.

It was our first time to this legendary establishment. We were warmly welcomed by everyone. Our waiter, Arian, was very attentive and immensely helpful throughout offering his personal favorites which did not disappoint, including: the best oysters I’ve ever had, their famous«charbroiled oysters” – a cheesy, buttery concoction grilled over hardwood infused with smoke. Their bread served is already pre-buttered and divine. Gumbo was incredibly savory with big chunks of crab, chicken, sausage in an amazing roux. Oh and their hurricanes – even better than Pat O’Briens in NOLA! Beignets were extra light and a great end to a meal we had leftovers to take home. Yes, it’s more expensive than restaurants in the area… for now… but well worth it and still less than food at a nice place on the west side. Portions are big, it’s a family run spot for 3 generations, and serves amazing Cajun/creole/southern food. If you’re familiar with the Pappadeaux’s chain in the south it’s like that, but better. I’m glad we called ahead because we were just going to show up and that would’ve been a mistake and a long wait. And don’t be in a hurry if you eat here, this place is meant to be savored.

Harold and Belle’s new renovations are wonderful in every way. My wifey and I sat in the bar area and it was a really nice experience as well as ambiance. Robert was a great waiter and he made our drinks just right! My love and I had the catfish nuggets and they were on point. Definitely ready to come back and I haven’t left yet!

1 star for the polite lady who answered the phone. This place is a bunch of foolishness. I try to support local businesses but they way they treat us hard working folk is unfair. I paid $ 58 for crap. $ 15 for 3 shrimp??? Soggy rice? I will never come back here. Your success depends on your clientele… You all are not worthy of my dollar.

June 2nd I arrived at Harold and belles around 6 or 7 o’clock expecting a great meal with my wife and father inlaw. But it was the total oppisite. First of all when we arrived we saw a cook in a red chef coat arguing on the phone with someone standing by a white jeep, he looked so angry that I felt I was in danger for a moment. Listening to him act a damn fool all we heard was bitch this and hoe that, I must say I was very uncomfortable, but my father inlaw told me to ignore and to enjoy our day. The inside atmosphere was ok but the pork chops I ordered was undercooked at the same time black and charred on the outside. The gumbo was cold and our catfish po boy was pink in the middle, the bread was hard and dry, plus the fries were old and cold. The food looks nothing like the way it does here on Unilocal. I even guy We paid but we were not happy at all. That will be the last time we ever go to Harold and belles again.

If you forget your cash you can valet using ATM and that’s a relief! The remodel is stunning! The décor is beautiful and to me the catfish, blackened chops, jambalaya, clam chowder, peach cobbler, drinks and other items taste the same. DELICIOUS!!! The service is a bit slow but I’m used to that because it’s always been something I’d overlook occasionally. Unfortunately, tonight our lady was very slow and it wasn’t even crowded. There were only a few people but nonetheless I enjoy the food & I hope you will too.

This was my first time here, here are some impressions. Clam chowder was good with a satisfying ratio of clam: potato, always a plus. We ordered the fried catfish which I may agree with other 1-star reviews of its blandness but it is better than overly seasoned fish. The fish may have seemed bland possibly because the batter itself was what was missing something, slightly too thick or too lightly salted. But fresh lemon and hot sauce made it a good reason. Disappointing part: –Microwaved bread and microwaved rice. –Don’t order the gumbo, or don’t order in the evening… It was way over cooked! Crab was mush inside and out where its shell was bendable. The sausage had no bite nor flavor but the shrimp was cooked in the hot broth alright… Oh, desert Peach cobbler — extra sweet with extra sour, mouth puckering good in that way. Bread pudding, I don’t know, maybe it’s warmth reminded me of the dried out bread and rice that had me in doubts… Wasn’t too bad I guess But it was just my first time, maybe I’d go back if I missed something… suggestions?

The renovations were good and much needed. My waitress was nice and on point. I wasn’t to excited about the food or my bill. For what I paid, I would have been better off in the Beverly Hills with some good healthy food. Way too expensive, for the flavors not to pop! A lil disappointed, but my Aunt had fun, so at least someone was happy!

I would have given the restaurant a 5 if the service was better. There were empty tables and spots at the bar and we waited for ever and no one came around to clean the spots up. Finally we asked if someone would clean a spot for us so we could sit down and order. The waiters/bar tenders were not friendly or smiling… one waitress passed by me cursing about something. I think these guys need to work on friendliness of staff and urgency with clearing off tables. Besides the horrible service the remodeling looks great and the food was great. We got the catfish nuggets, popcorn crawfish, friend shrimp, charbroiled oysters and fries. Everything was great.

I’ve heard so much about this place over the years and walked away very disappointed as a first time patron. Was debating 2 or 3 stars but the only positive takeaway was the free refills on my Coke. They were filming testimonials and a person asked if we wanted to say a few words on camera, but we had nothing good to say. –Red beans and rice lacked flavor. Plus the kitchen forgot the dollop of jambalaya for my wife’s bowl. We let that slide. –Waitress was a ghost. Literally had to wave her down in passing and give her a list of things you want or you’d never get it. We were served by 3 different people because at the end we said screw it and just waved down anyone near our table. –No condiments for fried chicken and fish. No remoulade, tarter sauce etc. Asked for ketchup and got a thimble… for both of us. No bread either. Overheard someone ask for some which prompted us to ask. –Menus were never picked up. Wife sat with 3 menus at her side on the bench the whole meal. –No drink menu. You have bar, and customers have no clue on what’s offered or prices. Wife wanted a cocktail and decided against it. –Gumbo was pretty weak. Only quality ingredient was the shrimp. Sausages were flavorless and couldn’t tell if I was eating chaurice, andouille or smoked sausage. And believe me I know since quality meats can be ordered online, Little Jewel of NO downtown and hot sausage can be bought down the street at Pete’s on Jefferson. I use this for mine so considering the price, they should do the same. The ham was run of the mill supermarket variety. I use real tasso in mine. The rice was mushy. As a guy who likes gumbo and looked forward to it based on reviews, this disappointed me the most. –Bread pudding was a little dry and microwaved. Hot on the outside, cold inside. I’ve had better at Bubba Gump’s. All in all, I don’t think I can come back. After all these years they should have a tried and true formula. Really no excuse for this.

Went there for lunch and boy, was it a great decision! They have valet parking in front to make it easily accessible. Once you walk in, the dining room is nicely appointed with fine table cloths and fresh flowers on each table. I had the catfish, which came in a HUGE serving. It was deep fried and delicious! The service was friendly and the whole atmosphere was very inviting. I have been to a ton of soul food restaurants all over the country and this is truly one of the nicest overall! Our server was also very nice, friendly, fast, helpful with questions and pleasant — someone who has manners — it makes me want to send all servers in Los Angeles to her for a crash course on what service should be. i would definitely go back!

I love this place. Service is hit or miss. Stinky attitudes sometimes fill the air, but I truly love this place. Large portions, fried fish is very good, love their red beans and rice, I like the clam chowder. I’m always a fan of cute fancy little restaurants in the heart of the hood. It’s been around for ages check it out! I think it’s closed now. I used to go for my bday and took the friends there for brunch at times.

Here is another review from my personal archives… I was fortunate enough to learn of Harold & Belle’s from a good friend of mine some time ago, and the location does not make for easy visiting for a boy from the Valley, But since I was in the neighborhood, and I was celebrating a big life change, I had to go for it. Again, going in I knew what I wanted, but I scoured the menu anyways as I ordered a nice cold lemonade to go with the lack of air-conditioning in one of the back rooms. I apologized to the waitress for not being able to decide on 2 of my favorites, but instead ordering both, don’t judge me! First I started with the seafood gumbo file. spicy and deeply rich in flavor, with big cuts of spicy andouille sausage, shrimp, crab and even a chicken wing to boot, served with white rice so as to soak up all that goodness with every bite. After my first meal was devoured they brought out my Crawfish Etoufee and right back in I went. Rich and thick sauce spiked with crawfish tails in every bite. I did slow down to savor every bite and focus on the complex flavors. When I needed to change up the pace, I dove into the amazing potato salad, with its smooth texture and mustard yellow accents. Normally I am not a fan of potato salad, but this one was fantastic. As I washed down my third lemonade refill, I once again had time to reflect upon what I just accomplished and how much I just spent on dinner(this place is not cheap, but so worth it) I thought of good times gone forever and new ones around the corner. I don’t think Harold & Belle’s is going anywhere soon, but I am going to make sure I don’t wait another year for a follow up visit, Aloha!

OMG where do I begin. So, I went to this restaurant today to get a quick bite to eat after church. When I arrived there, I walked to the main entrance on Jefferson Blvd was told by the slouchy looking parking attendant the main restaurant was under construction and the temporary dining room was across the parking lot in a little what appeared to be a small makeshift sports bar. I waked in and I was happy it wasn’t crowded and was told by a waitress/host to go and seat myself. I went to table six in the back. When I got to the table, it had dirty drinking glasses and coffee condiments over the table. Approximately five minutes later, that same waitress came to the table and picked up glasses and the condiments and left. She didn’t wipe down or change the black table cloth. So I’m sitting at the table and I observed what appeared to be a small happy hour menu lodged into a plastic table advertisement stand. I decided what I was going to have after looking on both sides of the this menu. There were at least two male waiters and two female waitresses attending this small area. Now, it’s 17 minutes later and some African-American woman with a long sideways ponytail asked me with an attitude,” you need some help? You ready to order?” I told her I had been ready to order. I ordered the gumbo, house salad and Cadillac Margarita. She then walked away with an attitude. Now, all of the dining room staff are walking around, laughing, watching the Clippers basketball game and at least on two occasions there were no staff members in the dining area at all. I began to grow tired and accept such horrible customer service from the highly respected restaurant, so I leave. As I was walking out of he door, the dark skinned African-American bar tender with the tight clothes pointed to my margarita as if he was finally making it. As I walked by him, I told him, «you guys suck!» While walking to my car, that same bartender ran outside and yelled at me in a laughing condescending tone, «make sure you come back and see us again!» I told him of how much of a disgrace he was to the restaurant and that he should be ashamed of himself. He then walked towards me in what appeared to be an intimidating manner. I showed him my law enforcement badge and made him quickly aware of any future troubles headed his way if we decided to get combative with me. He then started calling me a coward on several occasions as if challenging me to a fight. He was definitely out of control.(I wish he would have ran up on me) Well needless to say, the angry bar tender left the parking lot and his manager came out and apologized for the bad customer service and for his employees actions. He expressed how embarrassed he was and sincerely wanted to fix the problem and have me leave the restaurant with a good experience. Well, while he was apologizing to me, another angry customer pulled out of the parking lot in his car and said to me, «I agree with you. This place is a disgrace and that bar tender should be ashamed of himself.» He then told the manager in an angry tone, «you guys need to close this place down until you get it fully remodeled because this place is a disgrace!» He was obviously upset as well. I continued to talk to the manager and tried to understand his position and concern. I’m glad he did apologize but he was fully made aware the actions of his waitress and bar tender were far below standard and unacceptable. I would expect that from a McDonalds employee not Harold & Belles! I’ve been dining here at this restaurant for years and in fact my family was good friends with the original owners. It’s utterly sad this place has gone down the way it has. There needs to be some serious changes at Harold & Belles in reference to their employees and customer service or this place could definitely fold. I did post pictures of the two unprofessional employees. But I will definitely come back and hopefully I will have a better experience.

Every single time I’ve been here, the service has been pretty outstanding and the food is exactly what one should expect from Creole restaurant. Don’t come here if you’re a health nut. Do come here if you’re looking to throw down and have time to take a nap afterwards. We actually order for carry out more than dining in, just because it’s more fun to eat at home. The phone ordering service is just as friendly too! I always hang up and say«That guy was really nice!» or something to that point. Kinda pricey, but cooking some of these dishes yourself can be pretty laboring, so either do it yourself and don’t complain or splurge a little and eat high on the hog! Sure, they could stand to update the décor and such. But it’s also kind of a throwback to days of old when you step into this place. I recommend going solo or with one other person, sitting at the bar and ear-hustling some of the stories told by the old-timers if you really want to have a unique experience here!

My Husband and I was looking for good food places in the area on Unilocal. They had pretty good reviews, so we decided to go ahead and try them out. They started us off with some bread which was toasted and well buttered. My husband barely left me two pieces. The catfish nuggets were seasoned and was fried very well. The jumbo shrimp was a nice size and seasoned and fried good. My husband had the sea food platter with fried red snapper, fried oysters, and fried jumbo shrimp. He said everything was fried and seasoned well except for the red snapper. He thought the red snapper could have had more seasoning. The red beans and rice was very flavorful. We had strawberry lemonade to drink, it was very good but we had to keep getting FREE refills because the cups were small and full of ice. Overall this restaurant was very nice a bit over priced for some things but it is definitely a place i will recommend to family and friends. The waitress was very nice and the staff was very elegent.

If I could give this place 0 stars I would but thank god for that tasty super buttery bread that saved the day. It’s soaked in so much butter, I think I had a heart attack and came back from the dead just to deal w/their crappy service. The food was nasty, overcooked, overpriced, under seasoned, mushy, unedible but I wanna give thanks to that red rooster that came to the rescue. The jambalaya had this nasty spaghetti sauce? Seriously? The gumbo was not good either, my stomach is turning as I’m writing this review. Now, I’ve been to Louisiana and have a few creole friends and their food is so freaking good, so don’t get me wrong I love some comfort food. From what I heard is that this place was cracking back in the day, that it used to be the spot but apparently they changed owners and so has the recipe. I would never come back to this place because the service was also lacking some customer service skills. I had to constantly Flag down different waiters to try and get their attention for a glass of water while they were just talking and laughing. After 6 attempts I finally got them to bring me the first glass of water, that should’ve been my cue to get out of there. Don’t waste your money, and think twice before spending an arm and a leg here.

I first discovered this place in Business School, one of my friend’s family owned it and I never really had Creole/Cajun food. I remember LOVING everything I tried back way back when. The jambalaya stood out as a favorite. We had a 6 year B-school reunion here the other night — it was Sunday and the place was packed. Even though the owner, my b-school friend, reserved a table, we had to wait for the people to leave! So we had drinks at the bar and they are not skimpy either. My mojito was really strong. We also saw Louis Gossett Jr waiting for a table! When we sat down, the staff was extremely friendly. We were starving and luckily my friend put in some appetizer orders — catfish nuggets, the fried gulf oysters the popcorn crawfish. They were so delicious! We basically left it up to him to order and everything was sooo yummy. We had the jambalaya, the crawfish etouffe and the gumbo! All sooooo good. I love this place — great food, great ambience and great service! If I lived closer, I’d come here all the time! But its a great treat when I do get to go.

It’s been a few years since the last time I visited Harold and belles. In all of my past visits I left fully satisfied with a great meal and money well spent. This was definitely not the case on my last visit. Neither the service or the food could justify the money spent. Every establishment should provide their clients with a minimum level of service. But I think it’s fair to expect better service if the prices are elevated. That being said I regularly get better service at casual dinning places, Ihop, tgif, olive garden etc. The food is not what it used to be. I will not go back. So sad.

It’s not what it used to be. I made my reservation on OpenTable for 2 at 3:30 this past Saturday(21st) and I/we were not seated until 45-minutes later. The Hostess was not hospitable she didn’t offer any of us waiting(with or without) reservations what was going on or an apology for the long wait. Lack of customer service and management. Our server Trenton was great and attentive. The food was not so great. my lump crab cakes was fried in «old» oil, they were so dark! and the jambalaya was bland. I told my friends about my bad experience and she told me that the ownership has changed. I would go even further to say, so have the chefs!

The best Creole food in Southern California, hands down! *note* please know the difference between Creole and Cajun food before you go… If not one of the gracious servers will kindly tell you the difference. The ambience is terrific… charming, much like you would see back in NOLA. The patrons are friendly — especially when there is a live jazz band… be ready to boogie. I went on Fat Tuesday and everyone had a smile on their face! On this particular occasion we had the Gumbo and Shrimp Étouffée! The gumbo was good — needed more seafood, it was mostly anduille. The Étouffée was delicious… like the saying — makes you wanna slap yo momma! Oh and the french rolls it comes with… mmmmm. That is all I have to say about that. It was fat tuesday so I may or may not have sipped on a delicious hurricane. All in all, great experience as usual.

Great review Bob A. I agree with you bro, from L.A. to LA, there is not a better Creole restaurant! I’ve been to Nawlins and Shreveport, Bossier City, and Monroe too. I have relatives that make delicious gumbo. But dis der here is THEFINESTSCAMPIYOUWILLEVERHAVEEVER! Did I say ever? Next time, try the Shrimp Scampi over rice. Back in the day, the shrimp were as large as lobsters. Granted, today it is $ 31.00 an order, and those babies are much smaller now, the sauce is still killer. I’m also in love with their clam chowder. My hubby always orders the po’ boys, gumbo and jambalaya, but I cannot deviate from that dish. Mmmm… Anyone up for schrimp? PS. This review was only for the food. Good service has been inconsistent, and the décor is simple. But the food is well worth the trip!

I had not been to Harold’s and Belle in about ten years, since moving to the Inland Empire. I never go west of the 57 freeway. However, I was invited to West Los Angeles for a premier and brought a friend from Ecuador. I decided to give him a fanfare of tastefully made Cajun food by creole folks! Something, non generic like a Cheesecake Factory. With pleasant people of color with a sprinkle of Guichi folks… look white… but… I did notice the restaurant needed an overhaul, remodel. It smelled a little damp and old. The tables and chairs were horrible as well as the sticky dirty wood borders. The bar was old and the same. It really needs a remodel… quick! I placed a 6 pm reservation online with open table and arrived early by 1.5 hours. They seated me early, but stated I was early. The uniforms were the same old black and white style from yesteryear. The service was great. Fast, quick and the food was wonderful. Price… is still Harold’s and Belle… expensive. However, they give you an ocean of food. My friend from Ecuador was pleased with the food, but he was skeptical at first due to the dilapidated old smelly building. Which he gave them a 2.5 stars and exclaimed you pay for valet to eat pretty good food in an old dirty building. Then you pay a fortune for it. I would have to agree with him. He ordered Gumbo… was just ok as he and his family has had mine. So… he was… this…how much. Please! We ordered the $ 39 dollar fish plate… once again. He was like come on, yours is better at your backyard pool fish frys in the summer. So… yeah…he has eaten my food. Overall, I enjoyed visiting Harold’s and Belle this past weekend and eating some tasty food. As most folks cannot cook as well as me… so Harold’s and Belle will fill your void when your mama can’t cook for ya!
