What more is there to say that has not been said poetically and perfectly by my fine fellow Fold fans? This place is tops. It’s magic. Is it art or is it just a lucky thrift store find? It looks like art; it’s priced like thrift. This is the kind of store in which fictional children find magic talismans that take them on Arabian adventures. As I am a fictional child, and have been for decades now, I can tell you from personal experience.

An adorable antique shop sitting on the second floor of The Last Bookstore, FOLD is perfect for your niche gifting needs. Not in the mood to make a purchase? Perfect because it’s a wonderful store to take stroll through. You could lose yourself for a good half hour rummaging through their assortment of unique and vintage items; plus, hands down the coolest floor of any shop I’ve been to.

You gotta understand the fundamental pricipal behind The Fold. It makes 1 into 2, 2 into 4, 4 into 8 and so on. More corners, edges and shadows for creative contact. Less of the same, the«new» and the barcodes. Flutters of shutters and Stacks of wax. Get it? If you don’t get it then go. Go fold. Go old. Go seek a story has yet to be told.

If there is a place in Los Angeles where magic still exists, it is at Fold on the 2nd floor of The Last Bookstore. Fold is a place where you can find treasures that bring you back to lost childhood memories and nostalgic wonder — where parents find telephones and typewriters that they once used in college to small briefcases which expand into travel bars, the likes used by Don Draper on the weekend. Mint condition world maps from the 1890’s sit next to Art Deco cigarette lighters, along with a slew of working vintage film cameras(Instamatics and other rarities) to mint condition 16 mm motion picture Bolex cameras! On the walls hang vintage bow ties next to frugally priced art by Los Angeles’ finest contemporary artists. And then there is the ever expanding, radiant yet curious penny floor. Bring in your spare pennies and become a contributor to a piece of art that will be around for years to come, most likely longer than any of our mortal forms. This little shop is a must for any out of towners or locals who are looking for a sacred and creative space to explore. The fine folks that run this place always welcome you with a smile and appreciate your company, even if it is just out of your own curiosity.

One of the new shops/galleries located in the mezzanine of the Spring Arts Building(above The Last Bookstore) — collectively known as the Spring Arts Collective. Fold Gallery & Curio Shop is tucked away at the end of the row, but worth the walk and find. It has cool vintage items(that are reasonably priced) like cameras, greeting cards, bowties, McDonald’s Peanut gang(Snoopy) glasses, etc., houses the owner’s «found art» and other artwork, as well as other artists’ collections.
