A hidden gem in the middle of the ‘hood. You can smell them baking and cooking a mile away. They have all kinds of goodies and sweets, also juices and tamales! I love it all, mmm! The lady at the counter took the time to explain what each baked good was and she did not have any attitude??? Smile and the world smiles with you is what I say. You give and you get. No bitchy resting face here(BRF) so if that’s the vibe you give out, you get

Stumbled upon Marilus on my way to Phnom Penh today. What a pleasant surprise! I got the three cheese cake /bread, the chocolate cake with cheesecake-like top and a cinnamon cake. They were all very tasty. Most importantly, I recommend this bakery because the staff here is 100% service oriented. I’m not familiar with Central and South American pastries and the staff explained to me the specialties that they are known for, her personal favorites and also took time to explain some of the food traditions of the culture for the holidays.

I think the Guatemalan tamales are good but it’s lacking recado. It has too much masa — makes it dry

It’s one of those places that whenever your in town you MUST stop in and grab a bite. I enjoy coming in, the staff is great, tamales are AMAZING!!! I usually have to wait till Christmas for those, but here all year around. Excellent customer service, you will enjoy their blended drinks. There is a little bit of everything at this one stop shop.

I want to give them more stars but I just can’t. The tamales are not Guatemala at all. They claim to be Guatemala tamales and they are just sad little tamales. It’s missing many key ingredients to make it Guatemalan. The bread is a little over priced. The juices they have are limited but good and have a great price. If they only were friendlier. I have been going there for over 8 years, but the workers are always the same. You would think they would remember you and greet you with a warmer feeling. Nothing special about this bakery.

Such variety! Such choices! And such friendly service! My boyfriend were hunting for something sweet after our dinner of burgers, fries and beers, and, as usual, Unilocal!came to the rescue. This place is just a few minutes from our apartment(depending on traffic in downtown Long Beach, of course), and it wasn’t hard to find. In fact I drive by this place fairly often on my way to work in the morning. The area within which it is situated leaves much to be desires, but that’s not this place’s fault, after all! When you walk in you are greeted by the aroma of sugar and butter and my knees nearly buckled. I sniffed out the tres leches cake at once and demanded that the woman behind the counter give me a corner piece! Actually I asked her very nicely and she obliged. I hate that I have such a sweet tooth, but I can’t help it. The tres leches cake was just as I was hoping it would be. I had never even had tres leches cake before last week, and now I’ve had it four times. OOPS. I will DEFINITELY be back. I want to try that other cake that looked like tres leches cake. It was all flaky and yummy and dangerous looking…

Just came to the bakery hoping to pick up a last minute cake to-go for a birthday. Mind you this is a cake for an adult. Immediately their spongebob cake caught my eyes. They did have other cakes that would be perfect for an adult. But the spongebob cake was so unique I couldn’t resist but getting that one. When I brought the cake home everyone loved the design. The cake was extremely moist. The most perfect tres leches cake practically overflowing with milk. I like this bakery for the convenience of just being able to-go get a last minute cake. On top of that the cake was delicious.

I went to this place on June 1st to buy a tres leche cake for my mom for her birthday last minute. I came here because this place had great reviews so I thought I would give it a try. Upon entering you could smell all the pastries/bread around you. The lady that attended me barely knew any English but was a great help to me. Since it was a small celebration(7 people) I wanted a small cake. They only had medium sized to large cakes that were in tres leche. The only cake that was small was the chocolate tres leche flavored cake. In the end it was okay. Nothing extraordinary or special about the cake. I really wish this place had more size varieties.

Most of their baked goods are very very colorful which is awesome. I appreciate a bakery who isn’t afraid of using food coloring. Everything is nicely displayed like a museum. It does get busy during the day, therefore, have some patience. It is worth the wait. Customer service was okay.

Word on the street is that Marilu’s has some very tasty tamales(Mexican and Guatemalan) and champurrado. Yes, it’s true. This place is worth the visit. Marilu’s bakery is a favorite among many simply because of the tamales. I prefer the Guatemalan, as they are wrapped in banana leaf and the dough is very soft as opposed to the Mexican style tamales. I have to say, THESE Mexican tamales are not the best, the dough seems to be way too thick. So thumbs up to the Guatemalan tamales! The champurrado is thick, and sweet(but not too much) which makes it very delicious. The tamales are great with this Mexican drink. But they also go great with any of their baked goods!!! Let me point out that the service here is wonderful. I am always greeted with a smile and leave very happy with my purchases. I recommend stopping by and see what everyone is talking about! It’s worth it.

I LOVE Marilu’s Bakery. I recently got hired as a professor at Long Beach City College and, being from Fullerton, had no idea where to get a bite to eat near the Pacific Coast Campus besides nasty fast food. I discovered Marilu’s via Unilocal(thank you Unilocalers!), and I’m so glad I did! It’s easy to park near there(even with the construction going on right now), it’s never crowded, it’s inexpensive, it’s delicious, the women behind the counter are always very nice, and I’m supporting small businesses! I go there for a smoothie and a chicken tamale. Of course, I always get a little pan dulce treat too. ;) The green cocktail smoothie is very refreshing. It’s very light and liquidy. I’m okay with that because it’s not my meal; I drink it with my tamale! Sometimes they go heavy with masa on their tamales, but I don’t hardly eat the masa part regardless of how thick or not thick it is. The conchas are always warm and fluffy and delicioso! :) If you are they type to feel uncomfortable around people of color, then you will probably have some negative comment about the area. As I am not one of those people, I say the area is fine. On a cold day, visit Marilu’s and get champurrado with some pan dulce. You will not be disappointed. :)

Best champurrado around! The bread is always fresh, the servers are friendly even if you don’t speak Spanish. The tres leche cake is to die for, there’s a good selection of food it’s too. I’m a repeat customer because the food is tasty and fresh, they only get 4 stars because they use too much masa in their tamales, otherwise I would give them 5

A wonderful little bakery in the Long Beach area that has a fantastic champurrada(which is like a hot-chocolate but WAY better). The selection of cookies and breads is not large, but what they do produce is the best I have tasted in the area by far. The cream-filled cones and pastry items are very good as well, not too much shortening like the other local bakeries, it actually tastes like there is some cream in the napoleon and the cones. The filled tarts are nice, in that the filling is fairly standard, but the dough and crust is way better than the local competition. Whenever I am in town, I try my best to give this place a check-in to pick up a couple of items to quench my passion for decent Mexican pastry items.

Marilu’s Bakery, Marilu’s Bakery, Marilu’s Bakery! This place simply rocks. It has amazing natural fruit smoothies. Mexican and Guatemalan style tamales. They have tons of cakes and flans and quesadillas(the baker y kind) to choose from. Every thing is REALLY good! And the PRICES are Simply unbeatable. The other day I had the Guatemalan style Chicken Tamale. Out of this world! Here they have a Crumb cake that’s twice as big and as good and the one you’ll pay $ 3.50 for $ 1. A DOLLAR! If you live in the Long Beach area you HAVE to check this place out !
