Closer to home, off Ocean Blvd. and Bay Shore Ave. in Long Beach, Fitness 4 All’s simple Independence Day 5K and/or 10K along the beach makes for an energetic and refreshing run. To make things even easier, check-in and the starting line are right next to the metered parking lot. And since you’ll be running early, parking is a cinch. The run traverses the Long Beach Bike Path, and since these races are limited to about 75 participants, there is still plenty of room for bikers to also share the road and get some sunshine.(Bikers along this path become anxious when runners take over the path, so the smaller numbers alleviate some of the pressure.) What’s cool about running Fitness 4 All’s races is that their goal is to bring yoga and fitness to women’s shelters and drug & alcohol treatment facilities in the greater Los Angeles area. Certainly, that’s something I can stand behind. Packet pick-up is usually around 7:00am, and the races begin at 8:00am. The races are untimed; however, if you’d like an unofficial time, you may speak to the coordinator before you run. Otherwise, bring along your GPS. I always do anyway. Easy work-out, great cause, a lot of fun, and sunshine! My 5K time: 34.38
