My bangs look great. However I was unhappy with the rest of my hair, part of this is my fault for not bringing a picture of what I wanted. And not speaking up when she started hacking. Keena’s style is not my style. I loved my long thick hair and only wanted some layers and for an inch or two of the split ends removed. What I got was a massacre with those thinning shears that just made my hair a frizzy mess. The top layers hang awkwardly like hair that been in an elastic band all day and frizzes all the way down to the bottom layers. the bottom layers hangs down like some sort of weird mullet thing. I feel like a chemo patient losing my lovely thick mane of hair into this wispy thing. The longest layers are approximately how long my hair was, but about 60% of it has been thinned. I can see korean girls pulling off this look because their hair is so much thicker than mine. In fact, one of my korean friends HAS pulled off this look. But I have vietnamese/chinese girl hair that trends towards being thinner and straight. I’m praying that my hair grows back quickly and I can go to my regular stylist all the way in Chicago. The 1 hour drive to go to a guy I trust is worth not crying about my frizzy hair for the next 6 months. On that note. Jimmy Ngo of argyle is great. He’s a vietnamese stylist who with every major cut, made sure that was how short I wanted my hair. The first time I went to him, I was so worried about how much he was cutting. But I was able to keep most of my length and none of the split ends. And he has never used those dreadful thinning shears on my hair. He runs a small business out of his apartment and parking is street parking and never easy to find.

I haven’t lived in Naperville for a long time, but Keena is still the only person who’s allowed to cut my hair. Before going to Keena, I pretty much had given up on finding a good stylist and shaved my head(true fact). Then on a visit back home — some time round 2007 — my mom told me about a new place called Bex Salon. I figured I’d give it a try since my hair was still pretty short; if it got messed up, I wouldn’t be too torn about it. Five years later, I still rely on Keena to cut my hair. I usually make it back to IL every four or five months; in addition to hanging with my folks I will schedule an appointment with her. Bex Salon is no John Frida. Yes, the décor is minimal. Yes, you will not get your choice of spring water or tisane to sip on. Yes, there’s streaming Hong Kong radio versus Euro beatz. But if you have Asian hair — be it coarse and flexy or fine yet springy — you will not regret your visit. Keena has laser-like focus when cutting your hair and it shows. Even though my visits are so far between, she accommodates for this so even though I’m due for a cut my hair still looks acceptable. Even my siblings, who live in the South, will make an appointment with her when they return home. I’m so happy to have Keena around. Bex Salon offers excellent haircuts at an insanely reasonable price.

I’ve been to upscale boutique salons, chain salons(ie. Heidi’s, Vidal Sassoon, Mario Tricocci)… nobody does my hair better than Keena. Her prices are unbeatable for the quality work that she does(ie. straight perms). The salon doesn’t have the best décor, but I don’t really care because the prices are great, and her work is detailed & impeccable!

This is THEONLYPLACE I will trust with my hair. I have been coming here for a few years and have never been disappointed. Keena is the owner, «top stylist» and sole proprietor. She is amazing. She used to be a celebrity stylist in Hong Kong, and I’m not sure why she decided to relocate to a hole-in-wall in Lisle, but I’m glad she did. She is right next door to Sanly Beauty, and likewise, her clientele is mostly Chinese. Keena’s English is a little shaky, but I always manage to get my point across. Honestly, she’s better at understanding my hair needs than any chatty stylist at some«upscale» salon. She has never pushed me to buy products, and her haircut/blowdry is only $ 38! I’m guessing she does best with Asian hair, but her skills are truly incredible. Also her own hair is flowy, long, perfectly dyed and gorgeous, so I feel reassured when she takes scissors and chemicals to my hair. Keena deserves to have people knocking her door down, but then again… I like the affordable price, no wait and zero sales pressure the way it is now. After bad experiences at pricier and more well-known salons, I have promised myself to stay faithful to Keena!
