Do not eat here! We were served crispy ground beef tacos and the beef was red and raw. The queso is disgusting. We will never go back again!

Carne Guisada is a dream. Great food. My favorite Mexican Joint. Not the fastest service, but worth it.

Great place to eat-never disappointed. The Carne Guisada is to die for and real queso! We have always had great service even with it always being sooo busy! Prices are very reasonable and especially with the portion sizes. Highly recommend this place.

Really good for great hot suace, illiterate waitstaff. 2nd time they made my son late for school. That’s the problem with numbering plates. We ordered number 31’s which are supposed to be pancakes eggs and bacon, and got huevos rancheros. Food is amazing just don’t go before 8 am.

When you live in South Texas, you have access to an almost infinite number of Mexican restaurants. With that said, choose another one besides Sammy’s. I always try enchiladas the first time I visit a Mexican restaurant, and the ones at Sammy’s are nothing special. The carne guisada is also average. Everything I’ve ever had… you guessed it, average. What brings it down to two stars for me is the environment. I’ve been around five times, and each time I’ve been greeted by the overwhelming smell of bleach. Sure, it’s great that they’re clean, but it’s not exactly an appetizing odor. Besides that, it’s loud and open, with fluorescent lights, so it has a cafeteria feel that I just don’t enjoy. Theres’s two other Mexican restaurants within a mile of Sammy’s that I would reccommend over them.

The cheese enchiladas are good and so are the puffy and crispy tacos. The taco meat has a very good flavor. Prices are very reasonable. Beans are homemade. Rice was dry. Service was great. Place gets packed.

This is a good family owned Mexican restaurant. Very consistent and always good. Cheese enchiladas are great for children, not too spicy. If you want something special try the Sammy’s Special. One enchilada, rice and beans and a chili relleno to top it off. The Relleno can be very spicy so beware if you’re a light weight. Service is always prompt and friendly. A great community restaurant.

The good, the bad and the ugly. Service was excellent. Attentive and friendly. The chips were hard and the salsa had nothing to recommend it. The main course, had the #5 and 36 specials, were Ok. The bad… stopped in for a late lunch at 4PM. Apparently they are a after school hangout for teenagers. That coupled with the tile floors and partially tiled walls made the place very, very noisy. Avoid them at this time if you can. Overall better Mexian resturants are around.

Fantastic breakfast tacos. The best I’ve ever had. But they stop serving breakfast at 10:30 so get there early.

I follow a few food blogs. The great Robb Walsh posted a few month’s ago about how good the puffy tacos were at Sammy’s in La Vernia. An alarm went off in my head… What was Robb Walsh doing in La Vernia and how had he heard of Sammy’s. After all he is from Houston, famous cookbook author, Texas culinary historian and the lead restaurant critic for the Houston Press! How in the heck had he heard about this place and it had not been reviewed on Unilocal? So I decided on my next trip near La Vernia I was going to check it out for myself. Boy was I glad I did! After locating the place the sign says this is Sammy’s #2. Where is #1 located? Oh well this is where the great Robb Walsh came I had to try it. Clean and neat on the inside that you seat yourself. Chips and salsa arrived quickly along with sweet tea. The chips and hot sauce are amazing, perfectly crispy and not greasy. Sweet tea was tasty and cool. Looking over the menu I came upon the combination plates either 2 puffy tacos and 2 enchiladas $ 4.99 or 3&3 for $ 6.95. Being hungry I went for the 3&3. A few minutes later 2 large plates of food arrived. First, the puffy tacos very good but they quickly got soggy. The surprise of the meal were the cheese enchiladas which were very spicy, cheesy, & scrumptious. The enchiladas stole the show. Next time you get out highway 87 stop in for some enchiladas and puffy tacos. You will leave full and satisfied! Maybe you can even find where Sammy’s #1 is.
