Lots to love about Sushi on the Rock… the view, sushi and lively atmosphere are among my top reasons. I went for happy hour and tried two happy hour rolls(Cali & Salmon) and one regular priced roll. All of them were great but my favorite by far was the protein roll($ 20). Although it was pricey I could easily be filled with this one roll! Can’t wait to be back soon for another one :)

This place is in the cut and a hard place to find. When we arrived they sat us down soon. At our table there were dirty plates. They took 35 minutes to serve our 2 Cali rolls and miso soup. It was not crowded at all. The food was barely decent. Not coming back hear ever.

I can only review the happy hour. First $ 2 beers is a steal. The outside is gorgeous because it offers a great view of the ocean. The inside is nice, although it is very dimly lit so keep that in mind. The food is alright for what you pay for, nothing spectacular, but for the happy hour prices it’s darn good deal. The spicy calamari is my favorite along side the miso soup. Desert is also wonderful, their mochi balls are beautifully plated and the churros with ice cream are equally delectable. I couldn’t give it 5 stars because I had the house fried rice with chicken and it was pretty medicore for a $ 12 dollar dish. The rice was very oily and it didn’t offer much to distinguish itself.

This was the best lunch I’ve had in a really long time! I feel like I could eat here every day haha I ordered a Rod roll with seared ahi with an amazing warm spicy ponzu sauce to dip in and shrimp tempura. To drink I ordered the non-alcoholic version of the lychee cocktail… mmmm! So yummy. Lychee is my favorite. Service was friendly and considerate. They came back to check on us many times throughout the meal, which I like. Prices are on the higher side, but then again, it’s in La Jolla and the portions are decent sized. The menu is really extensive so if you did actually want to eat here every day you’d have plenty of options!

This restaurant is alright. Came in with some friends and most of us got bento boxes. I got the teriyaki chicken bento. The miso soup that came with it was pretty salty. The teriyaki chicken had good flavor, but the chicken itself was a bit dry and tough. The salad that came with it was kinda salty as well. There was a fair bit of food though. For about 13 dollars, I definitely expected better.

Simply delicious! Had the shrimp tempura sushi roll. Soo good! My sister had the red dragon, was a beautiful mix of spicy and savory. Sunomono salad is very light and yummy. The vinergrette they put on really makes it! We also got sashimi, oh so good. I highly recommend this place to everyone! I don’t leave here but when I come back this is my first stop.

Great experience. We ordered the spicy edamame. It was good, we have had better but we ate it. They seemed to need to be steamed longer or something they were a bit difficult to open. The egg rolls were delish and served steaming hot which was nice they were warm until the end of our meal. I ordered 2 of the 3 veggie rolls and they were outstanding. So much flavor and texture. My husband ordered 2 rolls with fish and loved his. The kids ordered the noodles with veggies on the side. The noodles were perfect and I save the veggies for the next day’s lunch. They warmed up well with the side of steamed rice they gave me to take home. We were stuffed! Thanks for the great meal and service. The place wasn’t too busy when we were there, the sushi bar was full. Restrooms were clean as was the dining area.

Rolls are amazing here! Fried rice is great with huge portions. Prices are steep though… but amongst best sushi in LJ. Fish very fresh and it’s in middle of village so parking can be a challenge.

Good sushi and at reasonable prices! This is very family friendly and the service is GREAT! Food came really quick and our server was so nice. Strongly recommend the sunshine sashimi and agadashi tofu.

Love the location and the food. If you are going for HH, beware. Most of the options are fried like many sushi bars. I did have the BEST Scallop HR ever! It was perfection. So many roll options, and the Chef’s are there to help you choose just the one for you. The Don is an all time favorite there. I like pretty clean rolls although sometimes step out and have something with soft shell crab. The wait staff is so nice, friendly and helpful. I never wait long for a spot. TV’s at the bar. The head Chef, I forgot his name, is entertaining and friendly. He makes great Scallops! No, everything he made was delish! Their Miso is good, rolls wrapped tight so they don’t fall apart. HR’s a tad on the small side. The prices are pretty much in line with most sushi bars. Great meal.

The sushi is good. The service is a disaster. If you dine in, expect to be ignored. Then after being seated, expect to wait several minutes for attention from the wait staff. They’re friendly enough, but weak on customer service. Service is brutally slow, with entrees routinely arriving before appetizers. Once the food is on the table, forget about seeing your server. It’ll be a while before they check in. Payment takes forever, too. If you order for pick up or delivery, triple check the order and expect mistakes. Missing rolls. Wrong rolls. And so on. Check temperature of hot food, too. If there’s a mistake, you’ll be blamed, so prepare to be mistreated. Bottom line, sushi is good, but service is torture. Prices are staggering high.

PLEASE do not let the stars on this place deceive you!!! It’s delicious! I think that the only reason that other people are rating this place lower stars is because they’re comparing it to the fact that it’s near the beach, and according to most people, «the restaurants by the beach should be the best restaurants ever!» Well for once, just rate this place by itself… because it is amazing and it does deserve 5 stars! Please believe me! Go go go! It has on point sashimi! GREAT quality fish! The rolls are very creative and yummy! They have great staff that are SUPER friendly. I suggest the Don roll. It’s crazy how your taste buds will feel after you have had this sushi. Yum!

I enjoyed the sushi, although I have had equal or better elsewhere. The view that everyone raves about is only available to a select few outside tables. The service is so-so. The hostess seemed disorganized and was not friendly – we wanted to wait 30 minutes for an outside table, but she would not take our phone number so we could go for a walk with our two little kids. Nor would she let us have the available outside table because it is for 6 and we had 5. So it sat empty almost our entire meal while we sat inside at a cramped table by the front door. Our waitress was great but the bill took forever at the end. The atmosphere inside is dark and noisy with loud music. I do not recommend for families with young children, except possibly if you can sit outside. My one-year-old baby was not happy in that chaotic room and I had to keep taking her outside to calm her down. There is very little space to fit a stroller and diaper bag. They don’t serve milk. They don’t have crayons or even paper for drawing. I don’t think there is a kids menu, although I didn’t need one as my kids do eat sushi. I doubt we will go back.

I was hoping for more from this place. Our waitress was nice and didn’t have problems like others have experienced. They have a great happy hour menu and ordered almost all of our food from there. Our food came up in a strange order. Got a sushi roll, then a tartare, then our appetizers came out, then another sushi roll… it just would have been nice to get appetizers first. The rolls were fine. We did try the coco roll everyone raves about. It’s just coconut shrimp, which is not really sushi in my opinion, it is tart however if you like sweet coconut. None of the appetizers are worth getting again. Over all it was good, just not great.

Sushi on the Rock is honestly just an average place located in a fantastic area. There really isn’t anything spectacular about this joint aside from a pretty decent happy hour. The sushi here is pretty much average to the taste and the rolls are pretty interesting but a bit on the pricey side. I found that the coco roll is probably the best roll on the menu as it literally tastes like coconut shrimp. The ambiance isn’t all that great inside but the outside patio is actually quite charming as it boasts some decent views. Overall, not the best sushi in the vicinity but decent if you’re in a crunch. Pros– Location Happy hour Indoor/outdoor seating Views Cons– Average service Price Taste TVs weren’t working AC wasn’t working

Seriously disappointed. I’ve been going to SOTR for years dating back to when they were on Girard Street and have always been a huge fan. We took sushi break since my wife got pregnant last September and went back there yesterday for the first time in awhile to celebrate her birthday as that’s what she had wanted. The food, service, and overall experience has gone down hill. Let me break it down for you: Food: Some of our favorite rolls WERE The Don, Ashley Roll, and Sunkist Roll. They’re all priced around $ 17 each and the plate normally comes out with the roll, accompanying ponzu sauce, and a side of sashimi so it was worth it. They’ve done away with the side of sashimi and kept the price the same — now its just expensive for what you get. Additionally, I felt the quality of food and presentation has declined significantly. The food tasted okay, but didn’t look appetizing as it used to. Service: The service used to be friendly and on-point. Yesterday, the staff and manager(I assumed since he was wearing a red shirt which was different than everyone else) appear to be amateurs. There is normally a friendly hostess who greeted us and guided us to our table. Instead we arrived to an empty hostess stand, waited 3 – 4 minutes before the manager came to greet us, and followed us to our table with a stack of menus. This was followed by the waiter taking our orders and having our entrees come before our appetizers, the sushi rolls came without ginger and wasabi(had to ask for that multiple times), asked the manager about our appetizers multiple times as I our waiter was no where to be found and he didn’t seem to care, and it was difficult to get simple things like extra cups for our bottle of saki. Com’on! Really? Ambiance: This place used to be full of life and energy. The music was turned up a bit, the sound of people talking and laughing, the staff moving quickly and cheery. This was not the experience we had yesterday. It just seemed like someone sucked all the fun out of this place. I used to come here regularly and bring our out of town friends here because it was hip and fun. So very very disappointed and sad. I left a decent tip($ 20 on $ 150) even though I didn’t think they deserved it and will be going elsewhere from hereon out. Would have been a 1-star if it wasn’t for the nostalgia. SOTR has seen better days.

What you need to know: they have good happy hour specials on hand rolls and appetizers everyday from 4:30 — 6:30. It has a nice view of the ocean from the outdoor patio. The rolls are very pricey for what you get. Sushi on the Rock is just ok. You won’t have a bad experience, the fish is still fresh, the rolls taste good, and the other food is good too. The only thing is that it’s very pricey(it is in downtown La Jolla) for the smallish rolls you get. If you do get a roll The Don and Sunkist rolls are good. They do have a killer fried rice that I have tried, but then again you’re at a sushi restaurant don’t get fried rice. Happy hour has stuff from salmon skin hand rolls, spicy tuna hand rolls, and potstickers for a couple bucks but it’s the only reason I would go here. I recommend going to Shiku Sushi down the street a bit more on Prospect.

Came here when we first got to la jolla for my bday. Wanted to grab lunch before we started our day. So, we tried out Sushi on the Rock and I’m glad we did. When we walked in, we were seated right away outside. Our view was pretty nice. We got the oceanview. I had ordered the calamari and fried rice and it was delicious. I’m surprised the flavor was really good! Our waitress was also really nice. Great view, Great weather and Great food!

In three words: I’ve had better. We stopped by here on a whim for dinner and were seated outside. Thankfully, they do have heaters. They did turn off a couple of times and had to be relit, but that wasn’t a huge deal. The waitress was nice and attentive, even though it was rather busy. The sushi we ordered was ho-hum. There was nothing really great about it-the rolls lacked flavor and was not put together well-several rolls were falling apart already when they arrived. The dragon eggs were not good. They are too bland, and even with the wasabi dribbled over the top the dish is missing something-I think they should add cream cheese to the crab. It’s too dry and tastes like it’s a halfway completed recipe– it needs a couple more ingredients. There’s a ton of other places in the area to try-when I return to this area, I will look elsewhere to satisfy my sushi craving.

5 stars for the cutest guys in la jolla that work here ;) Awesome sushi spot right in the heart of downtown la jolla. Great views, cool atomosphere and good service. Honestly i’ve been here a handful of times and everything i have gotten has been great. My only complaint is that they dont bring all the rolls out at once. I was with my whole family, we ordered about 7 rolls and they kept bringing them out one by one. Be ready for a wait on the weekend for dinner. It is a tight spot and gets crowded pretty quick!
