Very sad to say this place has shut down, tried to go there today after craving it for a year. Came here last year to visit family. Now this place is shut down

I’ve been wanting to get to Gomer’s for a while now. I love fried chicken, but Gomer’s chicken is just okay. Not very flavorful. Had okay service even though the place was totally dead on a Saturday night. Not likely to return, unless a Unilocaler tells me I was just there on an off night.

Complete surprise. I had read reviews about how it was as good as this place or that place and I thought that someone was on drugs. NODRUGS, THISCHICKENISGOODASHECK! The sides leave a little to be desired but, I honestly can’t believe how good the chicken is. I have been a real mark for Stroud’s forever but, things are changing. I’m sure that the dinner rolls are out of a bag. The thing is that I want to know what bag because as far as rolls that you get at lunch go, these are the best. Alway fresh and soft. We have been 3 times already since the initial shock wave and plan on being there even more. This place is a total dive in my opinion but, needs to be tried because it may just surprise you too.

It’s in the name… Chicken. They do Fried Chicken right. Thursday’s are all you can eat Fried Chicken and it is quite tasty. They wuld have gottn 5 starts but the Mashed Potatoes are less than stellar. Unsure what they do to them but tasted watered down. This was the second time I have been and both times the potatoes were not good, just ok. The Green Beans and Corn are tasty. It is a small place but quite friendly and the staff are attentive. The décor is not great but my guess is that they are not pretentious and are just letting the food speak for itself.

I have been to Stroud’s many times and I do love their fried chicken as much as Gomer’s, but Gomer’s beats them in friendly service and price and therefore I will go to Gomer’s anytime before Stroud’s. Thursday nights is all you can eat chicken, but I also go here almost every weekend for breakfast. Try and beat the church crowd if you go on a Sunday. Don’t let the fried chicken sign fool you they make a mean order of biscuits and gravy and pancakes. A couple can have a huge breakfast complete with coffee and juice and still leave spending $ 15.

Next to Strouds this is the best fried chicken place in Kansas City. But what does make this place better than Strouds is that it is cheap and fast. I lived down the street from it for months and wasn’t aware of the pure awesomeness. I am a frequent patron of Gomer’s Liqour Store(right next door) and finally one night on a beer run I couldn’t resist the smell wafting through the parking lot. The chicken is crispy and juicy without being overly greasy. Their chicken fried steak is also a winner in my book. While I consider it blasphemy at a fried chicken joint, my girlfriend orders the grilled chicken sandwich and she said its delicious. They also have a good variety of sides. The mashed potatos w/gravy and mac/cheese are the best. Depending on what time of day you go sometimes you do have a wait a while for your food. But I would much rather wait 10min for fresh chicken as opposed to getting chicken that has been sitting under a heat lamp for hours.

I’ve just been going to town on this strip mall with all of these restaurants here. First, it was Thai House, next Never On Sunday, and now I decided to check out Gomer’s Fried Chicken. I saw the special on the outside advertising 2-pieces of chicken, sides and a drink for less than $ 6 and I had to go in! Once I am inside, I see yet another special — fried livers and gizzards, 2 sides, roll and a drink for $ 5.99!!! I love fried chicken livers. I thought I died and gone to heaven. Of course, I changed my order and got the special w/livers only and mac n cheese and mashed taters and gravy as my sides all to go. There’s just something special about the smell of fried foods. I pop open the styrofoam box and was amazed at the huge portion of livers I had received. The livers were properly battered and seasoned. I enjoyed it. The sides however were the downfalls. I might have gotten them on a bad day because the mac n cheese wasn’t cheesy at all and I’m not such a fan of the gravy used on the mashed potatoes. When it comes to my livers, I like to dip them in brown gravy(that’s what they’ve got at Coach’s). There’s so many good reviews about the chicken that I am definitely going to return to check it out myself. All in all, the livers were good still but the sides need work. There were other sides that I am wanting to try like the spiced apples and the baked beans as mentioned by a previous Unilocaler.

Oh, God, the only 3 star review. I have a love hate relationship with Gomer’s. I had a Muncharoo, and decided, since our airconditioner was out on an 85 degree day, that I’d use it. I called to make sure they were open, and I drove all the way over there. The thing is, when I got there around 5ish, and ordered, they weren’t ready, and had to cook the chicken, which meant I had to wait 12 minutes for it. No biggie, that meant it was fresh. As soon as it was done, he bought it out to me. I had an order of thigh, wing, and leg and 2 sides, my order was chicken strips and 2 sides, and my mom had grilled chicken and 2 sides. The chicken on both the thigh order was reportedly very good with flavor, and my chicken strips were probably the best I had. my mom’s grilled chicken? yuck. If I had been in the restaurant itself, I would’ve taken it back. It was scrawny, tasteless, and looked like a dry piece of chicken leather. It lacked flavor, and anything bearing the fact that it was grilled. Yuck, just take my advice and don’t order the grilled chicken. The baked beans rocked my world, they were the best I’ve had. Very sweet, with a little spice. I ordered mac and cheese, which I don’t normally do, but it was okay. Just okay. I live in Independence, so I had to warm mine, which was fine. But they still were just okay. Maybe Mac and cheese isn’t what I should order. The rolls tasted like they were rolls you’d buy in a bag. They were not that great. I ended up giving mine to my dog.(who loved it.) My step dad had mashed potatoes and gravy and didn’t complain. My mom(ugh, I guess it wasn’t her day, and probably the lack of air-conditioner) had cooked apples, and it didn’t look appetizing. Her meal looked like something I’d serve my residents in nursing homes. And it was tasteless too, except for the baked beans. Seriously, I won’t be back, unless… I crave chicken strips, then, I’ll hop in my car and drive all the way there, calling them first to order it ahead of time, so I don’t have to wait.

Walk in and get smacked in the face with grandmas home style fried chicken. Not overly greasy and not to dry. Served up with Mac-n-cheese and a helping of mashed Taters and gravy(white pepper gravy) just like you were at a family reunion down to the plastic utensils and paper plates. For me this just added to the overall experience. You can order and sit or sit and order. The macncheese was over the top for me had a hint of cheddar in the sauce perfect. Gravy was a touch on the cold side but did not stop from me digging in. I am going to make this my new lunch spot during school. If you are looking for quick tasty fried chicken stop in or get it to go. $ 7 will get you filled up, two piece two sides and a small drink.

Yesterday at lunch I went with a co-worker to Gomers. I can’t give you as much detail as I would like because as soon as I entered the smell of home cooking hit me and my attention for detail left me. If you like crispy fried chicken, mashed potatoes with white gravy and green beans seasoned perfectly with black pepper and bits of real bacon then this is the place for you. Don’t get me wrong they have plenty of other things to choose from but I just had to tell you what I had. While we were waiting for our meal I saw several diners had pancakes and the pancakes smelled heavenly. I do wish they had something other than plastic silverware and plates but not so much that I will not go back there time and time again. Oh, and the only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars was because of the plastic forks and the décor. Another comment I should mention is that the people were friendly. You could tell they knew their customers and made them feel like family. I’m going to change the stars to 5 because of the people and the food but leave this explanation here. Don’t expect a stylish restaurant with white tablecloths but the food is the best home cooking I have had in quite awhile.

I’d driven by this place a dozen times all the while wondering if it was related to the Gomer’s liquor store that it shares a parking lot with. Finally I decided to check it out and I’ve been kicking myself for waiting so long to do so ever since. In addition to fried chicken, Gomer’s also serves breakfast along with a few sandwiches and daily dessert specials. The fried chicken sandwich is very good and I’m a big fan of the chicken livers… few places this far north seem to get those right but Gomer’s does a terrific job. Sadly I’ve yet to try the fried chicken that the place is named for but those I’ve gone with on a few occasions have and seemed to enjoy it thoroughly. Price is about what you’d expect from a place like this; you can get out with drink and tip for ~$ 7 although it’s certainly possible to spend more or less depending on your order. Service has been wonderful every time I’ve been and the food typically arrives quickly. I highly recommend checking this place out. Small, friendly diner atmosphere with great food and service at a reasonable price.
