The first day we went to Jekyll Island, we went to Great Dunes park, which is right near the Convention Center. Today, we went to the South Dunes picnic area. This place is a much older than Great Dunes, and it also has a much further walk to the beach than Great Dunes. But, the scenery with the live Oaks is awesome. The small parking area is covered in a canopy of live Oaks. They have one small building with bathrooms, and as you get to the boardwalk that goes to the beach, there is an outdoor shower. You have to stand in the sand, while you are using that shower, which is kind of odd. So if you clean off, you still walk thru the sand, to get back to the boardwalk, and the paved path back to the parking lot. THey also have a viewing platform, to see the beach, but I didn’t walk to that point. There are picnic tables, and a couple of covered shelters, and one shelter is screened-in. If you want to avoid the crowds of Great Dunes, and if you don’t mind a very long walk(up and down steps) to the beach, this is a good place. If mobility is an issue, this is not the place for you. If it’s high tide, there will be no beach to sit on.
