Other reviewers have mentioned how easy it is to pass the place — they weren’t kidding. It’s on the south side of Southeastern between State Street and Keystone. I was in the mood for chorizo in a sandwich. Checked the menu — in Spanish — and asked for help identifying some of other ingrediants in the various sandwiches. The result was confusing, so I ordered a Cuban with chorizo added. The sandwich was great except for one thing. The beef was way too chewy for me. I removed it and continued eating — great sandwich. Next time I’ll try the chorizo and egg torta. The fries were piping hot and delicious — as another writer said, they were crispy on the outside and meaty inside. Saw a couple at another talble drinking a light-colored liquid — they said it was rice water. I ordered some — my first time — and it was a tasty, light chocolately treat. I’ll definitely be back to Taqueria Monterrey. The language barrier is a challenge, but I’ll learn.

Has my vote for the best al pastor tacos in town, though they may actually be second best to the great chorizo tacos.

If you don’t pay attention, you will drive right past. That would be your loss. I first went here after reading other’s reviews and searching for a torta place near my work for lunch one day. I found this hidden gem and I come here at least once every few weeks. Their steak and chicken tacos are wonderful and I’ve had their Hawaiian Torta, which was also good. I love being able to get authentic food for such a low price. I have also tried their sope, but it wasn’t something I would order again. I love how the tacos are made with fresh, warm corn tortillas. You can’t get this quality and quanity at your local Taco Bell or Chipolte. Ok, so writing this makes me want to return today for lunch… at $ 1,75 per taco, who can pass it up?

Shoot, Alex K(first reviewer) beat me to the punch! Okay, secret’s out– this place is just down Southeastern off the I-65 Washington St exit. It’s right up against a little white church and super easy to pass by if you don’t know it’s there. First visit dont go looking for it at night, you’ll never find it! The entrance is on the side of the bldg. He’s been there for 10 years, and most of his business is word-of-mouth. As Alex mentioned, his English is quite good, so no worries about ordering. And such a nice guy. Tortas– mmm authentic pressed w/your choice of toppings. All the requisite meats and a few ‘speciality ones’ like hawaiian, cuban, etc– I like either the steak(asada) or the special«Monterrey”– steak, chorizo, cheese, eggs. Tortas come with fries– lucky for me, my favorite kind– the fat, flat, crisp on outside, mealy on inside sort. Tacos– Al pastor and chorizo are really good. Lengua(tongue) was a little bland. Salsas are fresh and hot. Ice cream– this is no air-fluffed product you can taste the real cream n butterfat. he has vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, butter pecan, and cookies & cream. I enjoyed vanilla while I was waiting for my hot food. it was soooo good. the cone was also a different type of sugar cone– good. Carnitas and Menudo on the weekends and seafood soup and seafood/shrimp entrees everyday. Open 9am-10PM, EVERYDAY! Just go once and you will be a regular in no time. local eats!

This is a Mexican taquerria that specializes in tortas, handmade ice cream and licuados(handmade fruit smoothies). It sits in a house in a residential area so it was easy to miss. I merely sampled a few things here and was blown away by both the quality and the service. The handmade ice cream they serve is as good as any I have had even though I would not call myself an expert on the matter. We ordered the licuado de mamey which was a new experience for me. It tasted almost like a fruitier version of the pumpkin which worked awesome in the shake. The owner Francisco was really friendly and spoke English quite well. Although we did not have a torta he informed us that he bakes all of the bread fresh daily for them. I can’t wait to try one. We were just standing at the bar eating and out of nowhere he made a beet-carrot-orange juice(fresh squeezed right in front of us of course). This was an unexpected treat. This was way more fun than any juice bar I have ever been to. When it came time to pay he tried to give us everything for free. The guy was way too nice. I ended up tipping probably more than what the food costs but it was worth every penny.
