Nice décor, valet parking out front, and some fancy steaks. The waitress started us off with a variety of complimentary sauces and a petit meat and cheese plate which consisted of prosciutto, another type of cured meat, cheese, and green olives. We weren’t sure what to do with the sauce so we just drizzled some on top of the cheese and ham… it went well together lol. I ordered the veal chop(medium rare) and it was absolutely delicious. Cooked tender to perfection(not bloody) and the entrée came with a side of grilled or roasted squash and red bell peppers. Everything was very simply seasoned which was right up my alley. I love tasting the natural sweetness of roasted vegetables. We ordered a plate of grilled asparagus as a side dish because we thought our steak was simply going to be a steak with no other sides… Next time we will know better than to spend $ 8.00 for 8 grilled asparagus…

Went here for lunch with some co-workers a couple weeks ago. I’m a little late getting my review posted, but here it is. Best steak I’ve had in a long time! It was cooked to perfection, seasoned just right, and was absolutely delicious. I ordered a lunch special that included an appetizer, a steak, and a dessert. I had the beef carpaccio appetizer, a tenderloin(MR), and the rum cake for dessert. Everything was mouth-watering and divine! The only reason I’m giving four stars instead of five is because of the price. $ 35 for lunch(with tip) is more than I’ve ever paid for lunch, but it IS a steakhouse, we knew we were going to splurge on lunch, and the taste was worth every penny!

3.5 stars Hallelujah! Not only did they know *what* a michelada was, but they made one so delicious, I’m considering becoming a full-time alcoholic. Your choice of beer(I picked Negra Modelo) & a tall, salt-rimmed glass filled with Mexican spices & worcestershire sauce. Heaven. Compliementary plate of olives, ham, & queso fresco was certainly unique, but meat & cheese were lacking in flavor. We ordered: — appetizer: cortadillos. Sirloin tips prepared a variety of ways(I chose ranchero with tomatoes & onions.) Sounded so good on paper, but bland in real life(like someone’s resume or their Instagram account.) Watery from the veggies. Pass on this. — enchiladas saltillo with chicken: salsa topping was so dark, I thought they’d given me mole sauce by mistake, but no, just a blend of five chiles. Loved that the ends of the corn tortillas were extra toasted & crisp. Large portion, recommended. — filet & lobster for him, which he said he liked, but wouldn’t order again. Sidenote: he commented that their beans were very good. — dessert: tres leches cake was delicious, butI’ve had better at family parties, and only the white mousse was amazing in the white & dark chocolate mousse. — both handmade flour & corn tortillas were delicious Eager-to-please service. Romantic décor: brick, wrought iron, red color blocking.

Excellent service. We hardly had to wait for our food to arrive. Reservations recommended. Complimentary cheese and ham was served as an appetizer. The Tango style music gives it a bohemian vibe along with its red walls with frames of horses.

Shrimp cocktail classic style was maze balls — 3 gargantuan prawns with great flavor. Complimentary ham And olives a nice touch. Hand made tortillas excellent. Steak and lobster was good but not as amazing as the appetizers. Really nice place. Next time ill try the brisket

This place was spot on money! Order the tapa de lomo for a party of four or more and you’ll go to steak heaven! The wedge salad was money as well. Every single staff member here knows the meaning of good service. Service with a smile that will keep you coming back for more. I’ll be back for sure! Thanks for the excellent service and amazing food. I can’t believe they’re Closed. :(

Well service started great, but as we all know it’s not how you start but how you finish. Upsides the order came out fresh and hot Downsides the chicken was Pink and undercook Our waiter was distracted with another group I had to get up and flag him down. Not to mention I poured my own glass of wine after he came and asked us if there was anything else we needed. Well there’s empty glasses right in front. I’m just was not impressed with the overall performance. Food was decent but not amazing knock my socks off wow!

Fantastic food and phenomenal service! My hubby and I went here for HRW and were surprised at the 5 star treatment we received here. Our waitress was on top of things and very pleasant. I got the beef carpaccio for the appetizer, which was outstanding. My main entrée was the brisket… one of the best brisket that I have had here in Houston. My dessert was the arroz con leche, which had a good flavor but a little bit thin to my liking. We ordered the café de olla as an extra which was phenomenal. I would come back here again the next time we are in the Montrose area. It is worth the money!

Came here for a HRW lunch and was very pleasantly surprised. Instead of bread or chips the waiter brought out some Jicama slightly dusted in red pepper(Guajillo?) and some sauces to go with the whole meal. For an appetizer I chose the Tortilla Soup which was outstanding, again it seemed to me that the used a Guajillo pepper in the soup because it was a very dark red and the flavor seemed to match. For the main entrée I chose the 6oz Eye of the Ribeye which was essentially a filet. The steak was cooked and seasoned to perfection and was almost as good as you would find at the Rincon Argentino in Mexico City, which IMO serves some of the best steaks ever. For dessert I had the Tres Leches which was also quite good. Overall the meal was excellent and the service was outstanding.

I’ve only been here once but it was definitely a five start experience. Since I came in with a party of 4 we ordered the Tapa de Lomo — a giant 4 lb steak that came with 4 sides. It was phenomenal — every bite of the steak and every bite of every side! It was so big that the manager actually came out and delivered it himself! The rest of the staff was also very friendly! We also got a free appetizer — a set of 4 different sauces and some dippers and ended the meal with some delicious caramelized pecans! The valet at the front of the restaurant is also really nice — no need to search for parking! At $ 170 for the steak alone this was a once in a life time experience — but it was definitely worth it!

I’ve been here twice and its now my top restaurant in Houston. The first time was for taking out clients. We had about 10 or so in our group. We reserved the special room upstairs. They have something called Tapa which is the top part of the Ribeye in a 4lb section. That was as good as I have ever had anywhere. And they serve only the top part which is the best part. Trust me. Taking a group and splitting this is a must. You wont be disappointed. We also had the pork loin which was excellent. I went last night for my birthday with my wife. We had the same waiter(Vince). If you have the chance. get this guy. He knows everything about the food and wine they serve. One of the best waiters I have had hands down. They even gave us a complimentary glass of champagne for my birthday. We started with the queso fundido which was excellent. I ordered the 24oz cowboy ribeye medium rare and my wife ordered the steak and seafood enchiladas. I am not sure what they use to season their steaks but it was again one of… if not the best steak I have ever had. There is something unique about the seasoning that makes it a must try. It was also one of the most tender ribeyes I’ve had. I did try my wife’s dish and it was great but not as good as the ribeye. We finished the night with tres leches and don pedro brandy. Atmosphere is romantic with dim lighting. I cant say enough about this place. Definitely my favorite restaurant in Houston and if you go want great service, ask for Vince. I am going to take my inlaws there again soon to they will get hooked. Top place.

I was impressed with the whole experience of dining at La Casa del Caballo. First off, the brick building gave the impression that this restaurant would provide a pedestrian experience. But, as we walked towards the entrance, the aroma of sizzling steak billowing from above the restaurant stirred my hopes up. Entering, there was a dimly lit room with walls sporting artwork of horse depictions. We were seated by a window with French-style shutters, which were slightly cracked to allow just enough light to our table. The manager and waitstaff were all very welcoming and polite. We started off with the beef carpaccio, having freshly cut Parmesan cheese, slices of red jalapeño and a special house sauce. I will have to try this again. All the ingredients came together perfectly. The sauce was incredible! My friend ordered the tortilla soup and I had the chicken enchiladas. The sauce on the enchiladas was very different, sort of like a cross between enchilada sauce and mole. The tortillas tasted as though they were just handmade. I would like to come back to try the beef carpaccio once again and try the steak!

La Casa Del Caballo, a Mexican steakhouse located in Houston’s Midtown, offers an authentic dining experience with some great steak and seafood. The interior is very spacious, with dim lighting, red-brick walls and velvet wall coverings, akin to many other Mexican steakhouses I’ve been to. The service is fantastic, with friendly hosts and accommodating waiters. They have an extensive wine menu, and their food menu revolves around heavily seafood and steaks(duh!). We started off with their beef Carpaccio(fresh parmesan cheese and red jalapenos laid atop thin slices of beer tenderloin) and wedge salad. My coworkers ordered their chicken enchiladas and Huachinango(gulf red snapper with grilled shrimp and jumbo crap meat), and I ended up going with their Langosta Del Caribe, which is a garlic basted lobster tail with asparagus, grilled veggies and Mexican rice. They also brought out a cheese plate and 4 different sauces(ranging from mild salsa to spicy habanero) for sampling. The beef Carpaccio was delicious, mainly due to the highly quality cut of the beef. The wedge salad was huge and definitely warranted sharing. My favorite part, however, was definitely the different sauces. The medium spicy salsa was my personal favorite. In terms of the entrees, my coworkers both highly enjoyed their dishes. My lobster, while extremely fresh and tender, was a bit bland. I highly enjoyed the Mexican rice and grilled asparagus, but the lobster didn’t really stand out for me. Seeing as how that was the only blemish of the night, I will give La Casa Del Caballo the benefit of the doubt and award them my 5-Star-Of-Approval :) I will definitely be back to try some of their steaks though! Oh, and the prices were pretty reasonable($ 30 – 40 for quality-cut meats, ~$ 25 for other entrees) too!

Holy smokes! My 3 friends and I had a spectacular night here from entrance to exit. The staff was so courteous and professional — they truly took exceptional care of us. All four of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals — 3 of us having variations of the enchiladas and one of us having a seafood special. The wait staff also spoiled us with some little extras here and there. The décor inside is also very nice, and the music gives it that extra Mexican flare to add to the authenticity. Overall it was a great night and we will definitely return. Stop by and you won’t regret it!

La Casa Del Caballo puts an interesting twist on the steakhouse experience. I knew going in that the original restaurant is in Mexico, and the décor and overall theme stays true to its roots. The dining experience is exceptional every time I go. I’ve always been seated promptly after checking in with my reservation. Service is prompt and the waitstaff is knowledgeable and accommodating. My favorite appetizers to eat here are the Cortadillos and the Classico Shrimp Cocktail. Now, even though I’m a shrimp lover, I have a strong dislike of shrimp cocktail. La Casa Del Caballo’s shrimp cocktail isn’t your typical shrimp cocktail. The shrimp is cooked to perfection, chilled, chopped ceviche style and tossed in their very tasty rendition of cocktail sauce. I had the cortadillo ranchero style and it’s a great appetizer for your inner carnivore. Don’t forget to try some of the salsas with the flour tortillas they include. Now it wouldn’t be a steakhouse without the juicy cuts of prime meat. La Casa del Caballo delivers here. Now normally I’m all about the bone-in, dry-aged steaks. Although you won’t find that here, their mesquite and pecan wood-grilled cuts or beef certainly hold their own. I enjoyed the eye of the ribeye so much that I ordered it again the second time I visited. I noticed they also had the cowboy cut and something called the cañita de diezmillo on the menu. They both sound tasty and I’ll have to come back and try them. My only criticism of Casa del Caballo is the sides aren’t up to typical steakhouse standards. The potatoes are bland and pretty forgettable. I don’t eat refried beans if they contain pork, although everyone I’ve spoke to raves about the ones here. They don’t have any bean alternatives. The enchiladas are amazing though, especially when paired with the Eye of the Ribeye steak. The Enchiladas Saltillo con Pollo are so tasty they should sell them as a side on their own. They’re probably some of the best enchiladas I’ve ever had. The grilled veggies that come with your steak are pretty good, but that’s pretty much it when it comes to sides. Overall though, it’s a great dining experience. I will definitely be back on a regular basis.

So this vibrant red building caught my eye being around the corner from my home. Made reservation via Unilocal and away we went! Dropped car with complimentary valet. We walked in and as the building was red on the outside, walls were warm dark colors inside as well. A fishy smell was prominent as we were escorted by the host, kitchen was close to entrance, hence the smell. Our waiter came over & we glanced at the wine menu, 2⁄2 of half red wine bottles were no longer available, the waiter had to check with his boss twice to provide answers, we finally decided to get a bottle of 2011 Directors Cut Zin, was tasty and under $ 40, better than $ 12 glasses of house wine. We were given a complimentary plate of Jamon & Cheese served by the waiter’s supervisor, and he opened our wine as well. It was a nice touch & chaos of wine ordering was soon forgotten. Reviewing the menu, stated steaks take up to 40 mins prep time so ordered Classico Shrimp Cocktail & it was fresh, cocktails sauce had slices of avocado and it was very good! I ordered the 8oz Center-Cut Beef Tenderloin cooked medium, I did not want the potatoes offered and chose veggies instead. The steak was very flavorful and moist, coupled with the vino, I was a content man! I asked our waiter where the restroom was and he walked me to the door & opened it for me! Last time I got that treatment was when I was in Thailand, not common here in North America :) tipped waiter very well & will come back again in the future!

We enjoyed our meal at La Casa Del Caballo. Clearly the owner has spent time and money to execute his vision in Houston. The service is friendly and the food enjoyable. It’s a tough location as many restaurants have failed here. It was not busy during our visit but I hope people will give it a chance and make this restaurant a success. I’ve driven by this place a few hundred times and finally went in for lunch with my mom the other day. She had dined here earlier with a food editor friend and couldn’t stop raving about their find. After our lunch, I’d have to agree with her that it’s a great restaurant somehow hiding in plain sight. They offer a great $ 20 lunch special with the choice of 2 courses that does a great job of introducing you to their Spanish fare. You have the choice between three starters all of good portion and then three entrees again of good portion. I had a very good salad to start and then the steak which was cooked perfectly. All in all, very good meal. The lunch crowd is sparse at best so it looks to be a fantastic place to do business or meet with someone you have to actually hear while eating. Service is very good, I’m assuming due in part to the place being fairly empty for lunch. The waiter consistently showed up table side and was very friendly helping us navigate through the menu. I plan on coming back for dinner at some point but am already thoroughly impressed by just my lunch.

This place is excellent. Upon entering it made me giggle a bit to come to a fine dining establishment that used to be La Strada… oh the botox and mimosas that used to fill this place up… That being said, the renovation looks beautiful and I was immediately taken in my what this new place had to offer. We started out with a bottle of wine and one diner had a margarita. I was mildly disappointed that there was only one margarita option, as I had recently had a cucumber jalapeño margarita elsewhere and was hoping they offered something as delicious. Understandable though, as I’m sure they’d prefer to remain authentic. For dinner I chose the only small steak option there was — an 8 oz center cut tenderloin. I ordered it rare, as I have had my fair share of overcooked steaks recently, and I’m glad I did! It was perfection. So tender and well cooked. The sides that come with the steaks are different than most places, which was a nice change. There were some excellent refried beans that were cooked with pork, some Mexican rice, and some roasted potatoes. One of my dining companions ordered the brisket. He spoke very highly of it and it looked amazing. I highly recommend for anyone who thinks they can eat that much. My dining companion had just eaten a steak earlier that day during a business lunch, so he opted for the cheese enchiladas. I had a taste — and wow, they were amazing!!! They were a nice change to the Tex-Mex enchiladas that we Texans are used to. The queso fresco was light and it was a delicious cheesy meal. Unfortunately we did not leave room for dessert, but we were given some deliciously caramelized pecans when presented with our check. I could tell as soon as they were put in front of me that they were going to be amazing. You can tell some real passion was put into getting that praline mix just the right temperature so that they coat the pecan just so. I admire this art and hope to learn it myself one day… practice makes perfect! Our service was excellent as well. I can’t wait to come back and order those cheese enchiladas all for myself.
